A Look Inside The Mystery of ABC’s New Fall Series ‘Revenge’ – Premieres 9/21!

You never know what lurks around the next corner when you are in the pop culture business, that much I am sure of. Take this morning for example. As I was sitting at my desk, working on an upcoming feature for Icon Vs. Icon, I heard a knock at our front door. Never did I expect a mystery to land in my hands when our friendly neighborhood FedEx man handed me a rather large package. I wandered back to my desk to open the package and see what this was all about. To my surprise, I discovered a beautifully crafted, high gloss, wooden box with a small latch. At this point, I was even more intrigued and almost a little wary of popping the latch to reveal the mystery contents! I am not ashamed to admit that I had flashbacks of Brad Pitt’s experience with a mystery box in ‘Se7en’ but with my mind racing, I threw caution to the wind and flipped it open and raised the lid.

'Revenge' premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21, 10|9 C

The first thing that caught my eye was an envelope, which I would immediately open, along with a small cad that reads “Revenge is sweet.” The inside of the lid revealed that this was all in regard to ABC’s upcoming series, ‘Revenge’. The envelope contained a small letter composed on the stationery of one Emily Thorne. The letter (which you can get a clear view of by clicking on the images in the gallery below) was written by one Amanda Clarke, who reveals that she is better known as Emily Thorne. She reveals that her father died in prison as a wrongly convicted man and she is seeking vengeance on those who did him in and destroyed her childhood. In the immortal words of Marty McFly, “This is heavy!”

As I glanced down, I saw that in this beautiful case were some additional items. There was a box of Godiva chocolates, Dark Truffles, for those keeping score at home and an iPad. Amanda advised that the enclosed iPad contained all the information that I would need to begin to uncover the truth about what happened in the Hamptons twenty years ago. She also revealed that she had included a personal video message, the first of three she would be sending, that would divulge even more of her secrets. I concluded by saying “I trust you will keep these videos confidential.” Hmmmm? All of this was very perplexing but at no point was any of this not exciting!

Again, I gave the box another look and noticed that there was logo etched on the lid. It is best described as three interlocking figure eights. I carefully removed the iPad from the handcrafted case and powered it up. The first thing that I noticed was that the background was set to a photo of a group of 35 people, of all races and nationalities, who were holding up a banner that reads “Grayson Global – Executive Retreat 1992”. They appear to be at some type of corporate resort either which could possibly be in Hawaii, judging by the foliage and the ample amounts of palm tress in the background and that they are wearing the festive Hawaiian leis. The time on the iPad was set to PST, three hours behind me here on the East Coast. This could be nothing but at this point, anything could be a clue and I began to jot it down. In the Videos folder, there were three files. “Emily’s Personal Video Message,” “Revenge Music Video” and the pilot episode of the series.

A look at the mysterious box...

I clicked on “Emily’s Personal Video Message” first. This was my first glimpse of the mystery woman — a gorgeous, blonde, twenty-something that certainly draws her fair share of glances from the opposite sex. I was again captivated as she began to speak, again mentioning that her father had died in prison an innocent man but added that it was because an “the woman he loved betrayed him.” Isn’t that always the way?! She continued, “I have made it my mission to seek retribution for the injustice that he suffered. After years of surveillance, studying all the conspirators and identifying their sins and weaknesses. I finally devised a plan to ensure that they all pay.” It was there, as the video played, that I noticed that she or someone using a marker to mark through, with a giant red X, a blonde woman wearing a Hawaiian lei. I have to note that it was not the same photo that I had discovered upon opening the iPad. She finished by saying that she would see me next week and “maybe then I would understand that revenge is the only way that she’ll ever be set free.” I have to admit, I am hooked and can’t wait to see where this is all going. Onward!

Next, I launched the video marked “Revenge Music Video”. It is a music video from Angus & Julia Stone featuring footage from ‘Revenge’ and live footage of the duo performing the jam. The song, which is as beautiful as it is haunting is titled “For You” and seems to be the perfect theme for Emily Thorne’s story of revenge. The video gives you a look at many of the shows key players and features several shots of that symbol I mentioned earlier. From the footage, you can tell that Emily has not kidding when she said she had been keeping tabs on the people who may be involved!  It appears that she has not only been keeping notes but shooting video of their indiscretions! Very steamy stuff! One thing is for certain, there will certainly be twists and turns around every bend! This is definitely rockets ‘Revenge’ to the top of my must-see list for the Fall!

Truer words have never be spoken...

Slowly soaking all of this in, my eye was drawn back to the card that simply read” Revenge is sweet.” I couldn’t help but notice, now that everything I encounter could be some type of clue, that the “g” in the word “Revenge” is in red while the rest of the lettering is black. Very interesting! Something tells me that those with a keen eye may find all sorts of hidden messages throughout the series, which makes it all the more intriguing!

With all this in mind, I started to do some more digging to give you a full lowdown on the series. It seems that the script will also be available for free download at the Kindlestore until Sept. 21, which is the date the premieres. It is sure to be chock full of clue, so download it here!
