Blackwater Distilling™, Inc. (“Blackwater”), Maryland’s first fully licensed beverage alcohol distiller since 1972, today announced the release of Sloop Betty Honey vodka. Sloop Betty Honey is an infusion of Blackwater’s multiple Gold Medal-winning Sloop Betty handcrafted wheat vodka and natural honey from Maryland’s eastern shore.

“We founded Blackwater with a goal of making world-class spirits out of some of the great ingredients available locally,” said CEO Christopher Cook. “Sloop Betty Honey is a true expression of coastal Maryland, telling the story of the land and air through the nectars from the unique mix of trees and flowers surrounding the beehive. Bees are also integral to the agricultural economy, pollinating many of the fruits and vegetables we eat everyday. By sourcing organic ingredients for our products whenever possible, we hope we’re also doing our part to cut back on pesticide use and prevent colony collapse disorder among bees.”

The first run of Sloop Betty Honey will be infused with honey primarily from the nectar of butterbean flowers, which will be distributed through Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC). Later, Blackwater plans to release seasonal offerings made with different honeys.

“Sloop Betty really is the perfect base for an infusion like this,” said COO Jon Cook. “We designed our vodka to balance the crisp floral notes of organic wheat spirit and the creamy vanilla notes of organic sugarcane spirit, which adds further depth to the complex flavors of the honey. Once we release some of the other honey flavors we’ve been experimenting with, you’ll be amazed at how each honey brings out different subtleties in the vodka.”

Distiller Jon Blair added, “Sloop Betty Honey will surprise you with its versatility. It goes great with winter flavors like cinnamon, allspice, rosemary, and sage, and the sweetness will balance out the spiciness of ginger or the tartness of freshly squeezed lemon, lime, or grapefruit juice. Of course, if you really want to showcase the subtlety of the honey, try it on the rocks topped up with soda water and a twist of lemon.”

Blackwater sources the honey from a local apiary owned by Kara Brook of Waxing Kara, a purveyor of natural, honey-based products.

A launch party for Sloop Betty Honey vodka will be held on January 30 at Libertine in Washington, DC at 2435 18th St NW from 7pm to 9:30pm.
