New wave fans rejoice, the summer’s most star-studded bill will kick off this August with the Retro Futura Tour 2014. Headlined by Thompson Twins‘ Tom Bailey with co-headliner Howard Jones, the jam-packed show will also feature sets from Ultravox’s Midge Ure, China Crisis and Katrina (ex-Katrina And The Waves). In addition to being an amazing evening of live music, fans will witness an historic event since this tour marks the first time lead singer, keyboard player, guitarist and songwriter Tom Bailey will perform Thompson Twins hits live in nearly three decades. Bailey commented, “”This will be the first time I’ve sung the Thompson Twins’ hits in decades. It’s taken a long time, but now I’m really looking forward to playing those songs to some of the fans that were there first time around.” Please see below for tour dates; to purchase tickets, please click here.
The Thompson Twins had huge hits on both sides of the Atlantic, with songs such as “Hold Me Now”, “Doctor Doctor”, “You Take Me Up” and “Love On Your Side”, providing the soundtrack for so many people’s lives in the mid-eighties. The band also enjoyed big success on the US dance chart with “Lies”, “In the Name of Love”, “Hold me Now” and “In the Name of Love ’88”, all reaching #1. In 1985 the band played Live Aid at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia where they were introduced by Madonna to a crowd of over 100,000 and an estimated global TV audience of 1.9 billion across 150 nations. The band were later joined on stage during their performance by Madonna and Nile Rogers.
Formed in 1977, the original Thompson Twins trimmed down their line-up in 1982 to a three piece of Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway as they adopted a more electronic synthesizer based sonic line-up. Tom Bailey was the singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and, along with lyricist Alannah Currie, composed and arranged the Thompson Twins music. The last Thompson Twins show was in Texas in August 1987. Since then Bailey has worked in many different areas of music, from the experimental electronic Babble and Kolab to the Indo-fusion of the Holiwater Band, the visual astronomy project BSP and the sound-system dub of International Observer.
The music and videos of the Thompson Twins became a fixture on hit radio and music television throughout the eighties. Tom Bailey will at last be bringing those songs, which meant so much to so many, back live in 2014.
Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers. His first two albums HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN’S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?” In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well.” Howard Jones has sold over 8 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world.
Midge Ure has received Ivor Novello, Grammy and BASCAP awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records. By 1985, Midge Ure’s single “If I Was” went to #1 and he had already crammed several musical lifetimes into a 10-year career – Slik, The Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy, Visage, Ultravox and co-organizer, co-writer and producer of the most famous one-off group in musical history, Band Aid, and the world-wide hit charity single “Do They Know Its Christmas”. Ultravox’s songs “Reap the Wild Wind”, “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes”, “Love’s Great Adventure” and 1981’s timeless “Vienna” were all massive hits the world over.
China Crisis are an English pop/rock band formed in 1979 with vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Their third album, FLAUNT THE IMPERFETCION, was produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame and reached # 9 On the UK Albums Chart in May, 1985. China Crisis were so honored to work directly with Becker that they officially listed him in the group as a quintet consisting of Daly, Lundon, Johnson, Wilkinson, and Becker on the album’s credits. He never formally appeared with the band (but made important playing contributions on the album). The album was promoted by the # 14 UK hit single “Black Man Ray,” which also enjoyed critical acclaim and international success. The follow-up, “King in a Catholic Style (Wake Up),” was a Top 20 UK single. The five-piece band worked with Becker once more on 1989’s DIARY OF A HOLLOW HORSE. China Crisis has seen success in the United Kingdom with ten hit singles including “King In A Catholic Style (Wake Up)” and “Working With Fire And Steel” and six albums, as well as success in Western Europe, Australia and the Americas.
Former lead singer from the Grammy-nominated band, Katrina and The Waves, Katrina now has a career both as a solo artist and with her new band. Katrina and The Waves had their first big break in 1984 when The Bangles covered their song “Going Down To Liverpool.” This drew attention to the group and lead to an international deal with Capitol Records. The first Capitol album, KATRINA AND THE WAVES released in 1985, was a substantial critical and commercial success and “Walking on Sunshine” was a worldwide hit earning top ten spots around the globe. Since then, the song has been broadcasted over 2,500,000 times in the U.S. and was the highest played track on radio in the summer of 2008.
