Retro Review: Olive Films Releases ‘My Summer Story’ On Blu-ray!

'My Summer Story'
‘My Summer Story’

This week, our resident movie reviewer, Jeremy Morrison, is back with a fresh review of one of Olive Films most exciting new releases, “My Summer Story.”

My Summer Story’ is a sequel to the 1983 nostalgia fest ‘A Christmas Story.’ Your enjoyment of this film depends on you checking your emotions at the door and actually watching the film like an adult, and not like some spoiled toddler waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve. You’ve been warned.

So check this out, folks. ‘My Summer Story’ is a film I didn’t even know existed prior to the upstanding citizens over at Olive Films announcement of its release. The film, made in 1989, brings back almost all of the Characters from the Christmas classic, but none of the actors that brought those roles to life. This will make some people feel sketched out. Get over it. Grodin, Steenburgen, and the Culkins are fabulous in this quaint story set the summer following “The Old Man” being the recipient of that “fragile” package and gifting young Ralphie his Red Ryder BB-Gun.

The film, inspired by a novel by as well as a script co-written by Jean Shepherd, whom also is the lone return from the previous film as the Narrator, is a fun look into the life of The Parkers as they spend their summer in good ol’ Hammond Indiana. Bob Clark sets the tone from the opening scene and proves (yet again) he is a fantastic filmmaker capable of jumping genres as a hired gun that treats every film with the respect it deserves.

I highly recommend you check this out if you haven’t before. The story is packed with fun for the whole family. Grodin is caught channeling Darren McGavin more often than not, but he still brings enough of his classic Grodin dickisms to lay stake to the role being his own this time out. The disc Olive Films out together is as bare bones as they come, but gosh is it wonderful to look at. The picture and sound are good enough to warrant a spot on your shelf that still holds physical media. — Jeremy Morrison, Film Geek
