Sylvester Stallone’s ‘The Expendables’ Explodes Onto Blu-ray and DVD!

Sylvester Stallone’s ‘The Expendables’ Explodes Onto Blu-ray and DVD!

It was a feat that many said couldn’t be done. The mission? To gather an all-star cast consisting of the biggest names in action movie history and put the into one explosive flick that oozes testosterone! It was an action movie fans’ wet dream but questions still remained: Could it be done and who could pull it off? As it turns out, there was only one man was brave enough to take on this ultimate challenge. A man who wasn’t afraid to take it to the edge and beyond. That man is none other than the iconic Sylvester Stallone. One of the most influential action heroes of all time, Stallone teamed with writer David Callaham to lay the ground work for The Expendables. Once the ball was rolling, Stallone made calls to the biggest names in action cinema and the rest was history! Answering Stallone’s call to arms for the over-the-top action that the fans have been craving a were a mix the hottest action stars from today and yesteryear, such as Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke. To round out the cast, Sly even managed to wrangle two cameos from sliver screen superpowers Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.

The story begins simply enough, a group of mercenaries are hired for a mission that no one else is brave enough to tackle: Infiltrate a small South American country and overthrow it’s diabolical dictator. The story focuses mainly on Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), who are the real deal when it comes to a modern day action duos. Once the mission is underway, the mercs realize things aren’t exactly what they seem and all hell breaks loose — much to the delight of action junkies worldwide! Outgunned and outnumbered Ross and Christmas scramble back to The States to assemble their team, only to return to the island and dish out piping hot servings of street justice!

For me, The Expendables not only offers a nostalgic gaze back to the films that I discovered in the mom and pop video stores of my suburban youth. At it’s core, The Expendables is a triumphant return to the classic action cinema of the mid-to-late 80s that made icons out of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Having been raised on the work of many of the actors involved, it was a dream come true to see the finally united onscreen. Not only does the film fill an obvious void in action cinema, I found the film serves as an homage to the films of my father’s youth that featured iconic casts, such as The Wild Bunch, The Magnificent Seven and The Dirty Dozen. While it won’t win any awards for it’s plot, the movie has it where it counts when it comes to action and wastes no time getting down to the nitty gritty. The film is a knock-down, drag out, over the top 80s throwback action blast that represents some of the best qualities of the 80s action flicks on which star/director Sylvester Stallone cut his teeth. Guns, muscles, car chases, explosions, martial arts, beautiful women and a plethora of one lines, The Expendables has it all! Hopefully, we won’t have to wait another decade to see these superpowers re-team!

Pick Of The Week: ‘Taken: Extended Cut’

Pick Of The Week: ‘Taken: Extended Cut’

The film follows an ex-CIA “Preventer” (Liam Neeson) skilled in hand to hand combat who must rescue his daughter (Maggie Grace) after she is kidnapped during her Paris vacation by European sex-traffickers preying on young women.

Amazon.com’s Editorial Review:
What could be a skillful but ordinary action flick gets a surprising emotional heft from the presence of Liam Neeson as the hero. Bryan Mills (Neeson) has given up his career as a spy to form a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter–but when, on a trip to Paris, she’s kidnapped by slavers, Mills uses all his connections and skills to turn the city of lights upside down and rescue her. Like most of the movies that writer/producer Luc Besson has a hand in (such as La Femme NikitaThe TransporterUnleashed, and many other French action movies), Taken drips with lurid violence (a bit toned-down to get a PG-13 rating, but there’s still plenty of it), deranged sentimentality, and stereotypes of all kinds. But this doesn’t stop his movies from being effective thrill-rides, and Taken is no exception.Taken pays just enough attention to the illusion of procedure–making it seem like Mills knows all the right steps to track down his daughter–that the movie cheerfully seduces your suspension of disbelief, despite many plot holes and scenes where Mills doesn’t get scratched despite bullets flying in all directions or pretends to be a French policeman despite not speaking French or even adopting a French accent. What holds it all together is Neeson; his gravitas and emotional availability make his character–the usual action fantasy of impossible competence and righteous fury–somehow seem real and relatable. –Bret Fetzer
