VICE announced the forthcoming The Jim Norton Show, to air on VICE.com, hosted by the comedian, radio personality, bestselling author and actor JIM NORTON. VICE and Norton will bring their own irreverent and unconventional styles to the popular late night talk show format. The mini-series will premiere on VICE.com on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

Episodes will incorporate stand-up bits, guest comedians and in-depth uncut interviews all shot before a live audience. Norton will explore and debate a sprawling range of topics, spanning personal to newsworthy issues, with guests including Mike Tyson, Dana White, and Freeway Rick Ross, one of America’s most notorious drug dealers. VICE premiered a couple teasers for the show; watch here:

Unlike highly produced shows, The Jim Norton Show will have an unstructured feel that lends itself to the unpredictability on set.

Norton said, “I wanted to do a talk show that reminded me of the old school ones I loved as a kid, without all the fake enthusiasm and sound bite-driven conversations. I also wanted to do a monologue that represented my stand up sensibilities and not have to worry about it being ‘family friendly.’ Because I’m not family friendly.”

Norton added, “VICE didn’t censor any language or ideas at all, they were amazing creatively; I got to do exactly the show I wanted to do. Which also sucks, because if it fails, it’s completely my fault.”

“Jim Norton is a truly wicked stand-up comedian. His live appearances are hilariously visceral experiences, sort of like being skinned alive on ecstasy. When he came to VICE to do a talk show I said ‘Why the hell not. This I’ve got to see.’ And having seen it I can now tell you, ‘This you’ve got to see,” said Eddy Moretti, VICE’s Chief Creative Officer.

In recent years, Norton has emerged as one of today’s most versatile and unique voices in comedy. He is a regular on The New York Times bestselling list; has sold out theaters nationwide as a standup comedian; and has collaborated with everyone from Jimmy Kimmel to Jimmy Fallon to Amy Schumer.

Official Trailer For Captivating MMA Documentary ‘Fightville’ Unleashed!

Official Trailer For Captivating MMA Documentary ‘Fightville’ Unleashed!

Fans of Mixed Martial Arts need to check out the official trailer for ‘Fightville’, a moving documentary about some of the sports dedicated young athletes. The film opens on 4/20 in New York and Los Angeles, with nationwide dates to follow. Also available the same day via on demand and digital download.

Synopsis: Over the last decade, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has grown from a controversial no-holds-barred gladiatorial sideshow into a billion dollar phenomenon.  MMA has eclipsed boxing as the dominant combat sport in the world, and is so popular that MMA fights regularly appear on U.S. network television – even as a longstanding ban remains in force in New York State.  But far from Las Vegas, in sweat-soaked gyms and low-rent arenas across America, the big lights are but a dream. Here, men fight to test their mettle, fortified with the mythic promise that an ordinary man can transform into a champion.

Directed by the accomplished filmmaking duo of Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker (GUNNER PALACE), FIGHTVILLE takes us to Southern Louisiana, where a group of young athletes, including future MMA powerhouse Dustin Poirier, strive towards personal and professional greatness. The reward? A triumph that could ultimately yield an opportunity to compete professionally in the sport’s upper echelons.

FIGHTVILLE is a microcosm of life, a physical manifestation of the American Dream and the relentless dedication required of all who hope to attain it.  Here, men are not born, but are instead built through self-determination, hard work and faith.  In FIGHTVILLE, that’s what champions are made of.

Actionfest 2012: Gina Carano To Receive “Chuck Norris Award” For Best Female Action Star

Actionfest 2012: Gina Carano To Receive “Chuck Norris Award” For Best Female Action Star

ActionFest returns to Asheville on April 12-15, to once again showcase the most exciting action films from around the globe and feature mind-blowing live stunt performances by the best in the business. The festival will also continue to pay tribute to Hollywood’s stunt men and women, fight choreographers, and 2nd unit directors, whose fearlessness makes action films thrilling for audiences worldwide.

ActionFest is pleased to announce that Haywire star Gina Carano will be the recipient of the inaugural Chick Norris Award at the 2012 festival. The Chick Norris Award honors the Best Female Action Star of the year, in a play off the attitude, spirit, athleticism and grit of Hollywood legend Chuck Norris, who was awarded ActionFest’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 (this year that honor goes to the legendary stuntman Mickey Gilbert, as previously announced).

Carano’s decisive prowess in the MMA world has won her the support of fans worldwide and recognition as a pioneer in women’s MMA. She first appeared on TV on the legendary American Gladiators show as “Crush,” and debuted in film alongside Michael Jai White in Blood and Bone. Recently, she made a splash as the lead in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire alongside Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, and Michael Fassbender.

Said Carano: “It is an incredible honor to be included in this event. Chuck Norris has always been someone I respect and look up to. Being able to represent martial arts as a woman has been a blessing in my life and I am so intensely grateful to the people who have supported and shared this passion with me.”

Said ActionFest co-founder Aaron Norris: “An award to honor the work of women in action films is long overdue, and we’re honored to present the first Chick Norris Award to the astonishing Gina Carano, who I am a huge fan of. She has exploded on the movie scene with the magnificent Haywire. We know from very bruised and reliable sources that she’s as tough as they come—making her the perfect honoree for ActionFest.”

Chuck Norris also commented: “I am honored to have Gina Carano receive this award. My entire career has been blessed because martial arts allowed me to do what I love– make Action Movies. I cannot think of a better person than Gina for this honor, and I am proud that she is the first to receive this award. I highly respect her martial arts ability and she deserves all her accolades for Haywire. Watch out world, a star is born. A proven fighter and very tough action star is here to stay.”

The 2012 film line up, information about celebrity attendees, and badge sales are upcoming at www.actionfest.com.

About ActionFest
ActionFest is the only international film festival devoted exclusively to action cinema and its unsung heroes, the men and women who put the action into action films. Currently in its third consecutive year, ActionFest was founded  in 2010 by Bill Banowsky, Aaron Norris, Dennis Berman and Tom Quinn.

About Gina Carano
Wildly considered the face of Women’s Mixed Martial Arts, Gina Carano has crossed over into the realm of feature films, cast as the star of director Steven Soderbergh’s film, “Haywire.” Carano plays the role of a black ops soldier seeking retribution after being deceived on a past mission. With a supporting cast including Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum and Antonio Banderas among others, Carano will made her big screen debut on January 20, 2012. Born in Dallas, Texas Carano was brought up in an athletic background as the daughter of Glenn Carano, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.  Gina’s career as a Muay Thai specialist began in the famed Master Toddy Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Under Master Toddy, Gina competed multiple times internationally, garnishing a 12-1-1 professional Muay Thai record.

At that time, Carano was simultaneously pursuing a degree in Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As her fighting career grew and Carano realized her passion for the sport, she chose to focus solely on Muay Thai, traveling the world for fighting events.

Among her athletic achievements include her participation in the first ever sanctioned MMA bout in Nevada. Carano defeated opponent Leiticia Pestova in an impressive 39 seconds.  Carano was influential in the introduction of women in competitive fighting, as her fight against Elaina Maxwell was the first time StrikeForce, the well-known MMA promotion, had women on their card in December 2006.  Carano was the victor, defeating Elaina by unanimous decision.  Three years later, Carano fought Christine Cyborg-Santos in the first StrikeForce Women’s Lightweight Championship.  This fight was also the first Women’s Main Card Event and was televised nationally on Showtime.  Coming off of her first professional loss to Cyborg-Santos, Steven Soderbergh reached out to her team after having seen her in action. They soon met in San Diego, where he discussed with her the vision for a film he wanted to shoot with her as the star.  Soderbergh selected Gina to bring authenticity to lead character Mallory Kane, relying on Gina’s background in Mixed Martial Arts.  Gina agreed to the role, and soon began production on the film in early 2010.  Carano did 99% of the stunts in the film and was aided by her fight background as well as special combat training she did with ex-Mossad agent Aaron Cohen. Carano hopes to continue pursuing her new found love for acting balanced with her existing fight career.  Carano currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kurt Angle Discusses His Role In ‘Warrior’ and His Future In Film and MMA!

Kurt Angle Discusses His Role In ‘Warrior’ and His Future In Film and MMA!

Kurt Angle is known to fans worldwide as one of the most charismatic and intriguing figures in sports entertainment history. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Angle started on the road to glory as a two-time NCAA national champion wrestler and worked his way up to capture a Gold Medal in the 1996 Olympics. Shortly after returning home a champion, he set his sights on the world of professional wrestling. Many years and countless matches later, Angle dominated every organization he’s been associated and currently reigns as Impact! Wrestling’s World Heavyweight Champion. As if establishing himself as one of professional wrestling’s all-time greats wasn’t enough, Kurt Angle is plotting the next stage of his already epic career. His latest project is a role in Lionsgate’s “Warrior,” a moving, inspirational action drama from acclaimed director Gavin O’Connor (Miracle), where he plays alongside rising stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. The film, which is already receiving critical acclaim across the nation, will soon serve as the start of the next exciting chapter in the Kurt Angle story. Jason Price of Icon Vs. Icon recently sat down with this iconic entertainer to discuss his role in the film, how it helped to prepare him for the upcoming Olympic trials and what his future may hold in the highly competitive world of MMA.

As a fan of the film, I am excited audiences will soon see how great “Warrior” is first hand. How did you get involved with the project initially?

It’s really hilarious. I happened to be in Pittsburgh, living in Pittsburgh, just minding my own business! A gentleman that was training me for UFC, when I was thinking about going into it, owns a fight club, The Pittsburgh Fight Club. He called me and said, “Hey Kurt, they are doing a movie around here. A fight movie! You would be great for the part of Koba, who is this fighter that is from Russia!” I said, “Ya know, I just got home. I travel 300 days a year and I am not sure that I really want to go down for it.” He said, “No way, man. This is going to be a big movie! At least come down!” So I waited a week and he called me back and said, “Listen, they can’t find the right guy for this part, you need to come down.” So I went down and they told me to start throwing some punches, start sparring a little bit and wrestle a little bit. Before I knew it, the director, Gavin O’Connor, said, “Hey, do you have any tattoos on your body?” I lied to him and said, “No!” because he couldn’t see any. Then he asked me if I could lose 30 pounds. I weighed 230 at the time and they wanted me to look like a middleweight at 185. They wanted me to be a little bit bigger than the other fighters. Thank God! [laughs] I said I could do it and then they asked me if I could stop tanning for a few months because pro-wrestlers, we obviously tan to look good in the ring. I said, “Yes, sir!” and he said, “OK! Then you are going to play Koba!” I was really shocked! From what I was told, they had interviewed over 40 different people and over half of them were Russian. They just couldn’t find the right look or the right person. I was very blessed to get the part. I just happened to be there at the right place, at the right time. My character in the movie is very strong. It wasn’t a leading character and I just have a small part in the movie but I was very happy to play Koba, who is billed as the best fighter in the world.

You seem like a great resource to have on board for this film. What do you think you bring to the table in a project such as this?

I do have a background in amateur wrestling, I have done mixed martial arts (MMA) and I work in professional wrestling. There is a great deal of choreography that goes into the fight scenes. What they were concerned about was me being on the road wrestling and then coming back there to film. They were a little worried that I wouldn’t pick up on the choreography. I told them, “Guys, this is what I do for a living! I can do in one day what you have been teaching these other guys in a month.” Thank God they believed me and it worked! I picked it up very quickly. I had five fight scenes in “Warrior.” I think that you only end up seeing two of them but you might end up seeing one or two of the others on a television where they are scouting me. I had to learn five different fights but it all came to me very quickly because of my background. Being an Olympic Gold Medal wrestler, I do have a knack for MMA and knowing what to look for as a fighter and being a fighter I can throw a good punch and protect myself. So all of those elements combined really helped me out on this project.

As someone who has been a part of the sport, and as a fan of the sport, are you surprised it has taken Hollywood so long to recognize MMA on this large scale?

To be honest with you, if you think about it, MMA didn’t really spring out until about 2001, so you are talking about 10 years. Yeah, they started in 1995 and 1996 and they went under for a little bit and were illegal in a couple of states but it only started coming on strong about 10 years ago. Ten years is not a long time for a sport to become a major force. That is relatively quick compared to any other sport, in regard to popularity. Dana White, thank God, ran the company so well for UFC that it wasn’t a long time for a movie like this to be made. As an MMA fan, you would think, “Wow, what took so long?” But 10 years isn’t a long time. This is really the perfect time for a film like this. The movie is really well done. It is very true to MMA. If you have seen it, it is very true to MMA and not exaggerated like some of the boxing movies that you have seen in the past where the guy should have been knocked out but the ref didn’t call it yet. This film is very true to MMA.

You are an extremely busy man with films, touring, pro-wrestling and training for the Olympic trails? What is the secret to your longevity?

Probably being insane or crazy. [laughs] I am always trying to have a new goal to reach. I started a food company to start making a living in a different way because I know that my pro-wrestling career is coming to a close. I signed a three-year deal and I am very happy with Impact! Wrestling. I promised them three more years before I retired. I started Angle Foods and we are doing pretty good right now, Thank God! But I have always wanted to be an actor. The thing is doing “Warrior” really rekindled my interest in trying out for the Olympics again because, at the age of 41 at the time I didn’t think I would feel so good. When I got in there, I was sparring with some really good fighters and I was doing really well! My take-down skills were overwhelming and I didn’t realize that I was still that good! I believe that pro-wrestling kept me young as far as being part of that in front of a crowd. The last thing I am going to do is choke because there is a big crowd in front of me. At the Olympic trials there are 20- to 25,000 people and I have been doing that for years. The only thing that I need to do is to get my technique down right and make sure that I am injury free and I should do pretty well. My training is going phenomenally well and I am well ahead of schedule. I am on weight and only 3 ½ pounds over already. I didn’t expect to be this light but I take this product called Ultra Fiber DX™ from Angle Foods, which you can get at www.kurtanglefoods.com, it is an eight layer matrix that helps you lose body fat quicker than any other product on the market. It came from a doctor in Germany. So I been taking that and I lost 30 pounds in three months.

What do you think the future holds for you in film and in MMA?

The Cast of 'Warrior' Visits Camp Pendleton

I want to use the movies that I have done in the past year, especially with Lionsgate, as a platform to hopefully continue my acting career. I believe that the movies that I have done are very good choices. I didn’t take the lead role, they were co-leads or a smaller part like Koba was in “Warrior,” even though he was talked about a lot during the film, I am not in the film as much as you might think I would be. The fact that I was talked about during the whole film was an honor for me. When I was shown in the film, that was when people are like, “Wow” because they bought into a different person. They didn’t say, “Hey! Look! There is Kurt Angle!” They said, “Oh my gosh! Who is that beast from Russia, Koba?!” It was cool to see that reaction from fans that have already seen the movie. The future is very bright in regard to MMA. It really depends on how well I do at the Olympic trials. If I place in the top three, I imagine that MMA will still be knocking on my door. As far as movies, that is my general focus, along with Impact! Wrestling. I have a Pay-Per-View this Sunday, “No Surrender.” I am the World Champion and I have to defend my title. I am very true to my company.

What do you think is the biggest misconception out there right now about Kurt Angle when it comes to MMA?

There are a lot of rumors. I have had a lot of opportunities, thank God, in MMA. The problem is that reason that I didn’t get into MMA, where I had the opportunities to get into it, which was just about anywhere, were because they weren’t under the terms that I thought were best for me. The reason that I am trying out for the Olympics and not signing a deal with an MMA company is because it is under my terms. I know when the trials are, I know when I have to be ready. That is all I ask. Let me be prepared, let me be ready when I know I am going to be ready and give me the time to do it.

The Olympics seem like a very good platform for me. I knew I still had it in me, thank God! I knew that I could do really well. Trust me, trying out for the Olympics is a lot harder than getting into the octagon. The problem was the terms. I don’t want to discuss the terms but I do want to say that I do love Dana White. I want to respect his privacy when it comes to what those terms were, what his terms were. He is one of my good friends and I have the utmost respect for him. I can’t really talk about the terms but they just weren’t right and I couldn’t do it at the time.

Hopefully, we will be seeing you soon, Kurt! Thanks for your time. Keep your head up and keep moving forward!

Thank you for the interview! Take care!

Book Review: A Closer Look At “The Men of Warrior”

Book Review: A Closer Look At “The Men of Warrior”

“The Men of Warrior,” released earlier this month, is a companion to the film “Warrior,” set to hit theaters Sept. 9, 2011. The film features two estranged brothers who, through a series of events, are thrust back together at SPARTA, the biggest winner-takes-all Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event, to confront their past and face off in battle.

The book, “The Men of Warrior,” features fine art portraits by photographer Tim Palen of actors and fighters featured in the film, specifically Tom Hardy, who wrote the book’s sarcastic and humorous forward, Joel Edgerton, Erik Apple, Nate Marquardt and Ron “RJ” Messenger.

The pictures capture emotion and energy, from Hardy with fists raised, ready to spar to Edgerton staring at his loosely taped hands with concern lining his brow to blood running down Marquart’s ripped abs, onto his hands and TapouT shorts.

Palen, who is also chief marketing officer for Lionsgate — a producer for the film — is know for creativity in business and promotion, which is obvious with this coffee table book. While it’s a unique marketing tool, the photographs are beautiful, highlighting the picture within the picture, such as Marquardt’s cauliflower ear and Apple’s fake set of fangs. He uses color mixed in with black and white to emphasize his focus, like highlighting Edgerton’s bloodied hands.

However, aside from the beauty of Palen’s photography, I am confused. Who is this book for?

Calling this pictorial “The Men of Warrior” reminded me of Playboy’s occasional amateur features, such as The Women of Wal-Mart. Actually, the entire book reminded me of a Playgirl issue except the men are bloodied, bruised and there’s (thankfully) no full-frontal. Luckily (for me) the book is sectioned by actors and starts with the delicious Tom Hardy and ends with the sideshow-esque Ron “RJ” Messenger.

From the looks of the film, it isn’t directed towards the female population. It seems Rocky-esque, an inspirational drama about two estranged brothers facing the fight of their lives complete with blood, sweat and tears. So, I wonder, is “The Men of Warrior” geared towards getting women interested in the film, showing us some dark, dangerous and delicious photos of these fighters so we decide to head to the theatre come Sept. 9?

The photos are enough to make most heterosexual men nervous and most women bored after one read-through since, by nature, women are not visual creatures. To be sure, my husband casts a dirty look at the large book every time he passes by, especially with the cover featuring the chest of a tattooed, muscular and shirtless Hardy. He refers to it as the book with “jacked up, half naked dudes.” Maybe he’s jealous, maybe he’s uncomfortable — perhaps a bit of both — but that’s beside the point. Is he going to see the movie? Signs point to yes considering he’s a huge Rocky fan. Does he want to look at the book? Negative.

If the book is to be valued for its poster-worthy photos, then why not market posters to adorn the walls of John Q. Public or weight rooms across America? If it’s the MMA culture you’re after, then why not a book featuring the actors sharing their workout regimes for the film? If it’s women you’re after, well, honey, Tom Hardy had me at “Inception.”

Bottom line, check out “The Men of Warrior” if you enjoy energized and beautiful photos, the work of Palen or “jacked up, half naked dudes.” Check out “Warrior” this September for a critically acclaimed film about redemption, reconciliation, family and MMA!

Rising stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton command the screen as two estranged brothers facing the fight of a lifetime in Lionsgate’s WARRIOR, a moving, inspirational action drama from acclaimed director Gavin O’Connor (Miracle).

Haunted by a tragic past, Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his father (Nick Nolte) to train for Sparta, the biggest winner-takes-all event in mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path toward the championship while his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), an ex-fighter-turned teacher, returns to the ring in a desperate bid to save his family from financial ruin. But when Brendan’s unlikely, underdog rise sets him on a collision course with the unstoppable Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront each other and the forces that pulled them apart, facing off in the most soaring, soul stirring, and unforgettable climax that must be seen to be believed.

A rousing ode to redemption, reconciliation and the power of the human spirit, WARRIOR is also a moving testament to the enduring bonds of family. WARRIOR stars Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Star Wars: Episode III), Tom Hardy (the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Black Hawk Down), Jennifer Morrison (“House”, Star Trek) and Nick Nolte (Tropic Thunder, The Thin Red Line). The film is directed by Gavin O’Connor; screenplay by Gavin O’Connor & Anthony Tambakis & Cliff Dorman and story by Gavin O’Connor & Cliff Dorfman. Lionsgate and Mimran Schur Pictures present a Lionsgate / Mimran Schur Pictures production. A Solaris Entertainment and Filmtribe production.
