Former Danzig Guitarist John Christ — “I’m Ready To Play With Danzig Again”

Former Danzig Guitarist John Christ — “I’m Ready To Play With Danzig Again”

As many music fans know, John Christ (aka John Knoll) was the driving force behind the first 4 studio records from Danzig. Influencing three generations of rock fans, John’s guitar playing infused blues, hard rock, and at times classical with an emphasis on pinch harmonics. In 1995, John officially quit Danzig and slowly faded away from the hard rock world. In 2004, John was involved in a horrific accident which left him unable to play guitar for several years. John would return to the stage in 2009 where he performed live in Essex, Maryland for the first time in nearly a decade.

In the years to follow, this unstoppable artist has slowly reinvolved himself with music by offering private guitar lessons, performing occasionally, and making his presence felt in the Maryland area. It was there that he connected with Bob Suehs of Rock n Roll Experience for an interview. In the interview, he opens up about his feelings on why he left Danzig, offers his thoughts on the The Misfits reunion and, most importantly, reveals that he is ready to perform with Glenn Danzig again!  Check out the interview and some killer live video of his performance at this location – Click Here!

Danzig’s Long Awaited ‘Skeletons’ Covers Album To Be Unleashed On November 27th

Danzig’s Long Awaited ‘Skeletons’ Covers Album To Be Unleashed On November 27th

danzig-blackestoftheblack-2015-1

You know it’s Danzig the moment you hear him. It’s not just that inimitable voice either. It’s the thick airy guitars, bluesy swagger, and “come hither” evil that placed him at the forefront of a number of musical revolutions. His work has indelibly impacted the landscape of extreme music, fortifying the crossroads between heavy riffs and occult imagery so prevalent these days. Moreover, you can consistently feel his presence throughout pop culture which expands further with his successful Verotik Comics and forthcoming feature film directorial debut.

However, Danzig wants to show you where it started with his tenth full-length album and first since 2010’s Deth Red Saboath — Skeletons. Due out on November 27 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment/Evilive Records Skeletons will be available for pre-order within the next couple of weeks and in the meantime be sure to check out Nuclear Blast’s announce video for the release here.

A labor of love that began in 1979, he pulls back the curtain behind his influences with a collection of ten covers spanning artists as diverse as Elvis PresleyZZ Top, and Aerosmith to Black SabbathThe TroggsThe Everly Brothers, and more. Recording across several years in Los Angeles, he quite literally reveals the bone structure for his own style and features some of the most striking album art of his career. Nodding to David Bowie’s Pin Ups, the cover features Danzig and model Kayden Kross in skullface.

“These are my skeletons,” he affirms. “You may or may not know that I dig these songs. You could say that some of this music is the actual basis and skeleton of what I listened to growing up—ultimately informing the kind of music I like. It’s the foundation. If you took Elvis and Sabbath out of my life, I probably wouldn’t be the Glenn Danzig you know! I’m glad both sides are represented on this record.”

Among the tracks, he takes Presley’s “Let Yourself Go” from the film Speedway and transforms it with a swinging distorted stomp and bluesy vocal crescendo. “I thought it was a song I could do something really cool with,” he goes on. “It’s also something that I didn’t think anyone would necessarily expect. When you tell them you’re going to do an Elvis cover, they expect something they know. Not a lot of people know this one. It’s actually on The ’68 Comeback Special, and it’s worth going back to.”

The Troggs “A Girl Like You” becomes a punkified juggernaut in his hands with its fuzzed-out guitars, pounding drums and the trademark Danzig sing-a-long choruses. He captures the rebellious spirit of the sixties outlaw biker films with a punked-out take on “Devil’s Angels” from the Devil’s Angels Soundtrack complete with his old school Misfits Dallas Arbiter Jumbo-Fuzz Pedal. Regarding “Satan” from Satan’s Sadists, Danzig assures, “You might be surprised, but I didn’t change any of the lyrics. I didn’t have to!”

Ultimately, Skeletons sparks the next phase for Danzig. Helping catalyze his next full-length offering and tour plans, it’s yet another revolution. “I hope people dig it,” he leaves off. “I also hope it gives everybody a little bit of insight into the music I listen to and maybe an insight into how I did the songs. If you enjoy it, that’s great.”

No matter what, you’ll know it’s undeniably him the moment you press play.

Greg Prato Releases ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’

Greg Prato Releases ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’

Another epic read from Greg Prato

Another epic read from Greg Prato

Since its inception in the late 1960’s, heavy metal has experienced quite a few ups and downs in popularity. But there was one specific decade that sticks out as the most troubling – the 1990’s. In what seemed like one fell swoop, a style of metal that had been popular for much of the 1980’s was rendered obsolete, and in its place, was a much more real, raw, and unique approach – detected in several new metal-based “sub-genres.” Add to it several changes in the music industry and media, and it appeared as if traditional metal may have met its expiration date…before several bands (and a certain traveling festival tour) helped put headbanging rock back on track.

Written by journalist/author Greg Prato, ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’ is the first book to focus entirely on this decade. Set in an oral history format, ‘Survival’ features over 80 interviews conducted exclusively for this book, including current or past members of Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Dream Theater, King’s X, Extreme, Winger, Cinderella, Living Colour, Faith No More, Primus, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Stone Temple Pilots, Kyuss, Danzig, Clutch, Life of Agony, Biohazard, Type O Negative, Within Temptation, Cradle of Filth, Death, Coal Chamber, and System of a Down (among many others), as well as Eddie Trunk, Riki Rachtman, and Lonn Friend. Also featured is a foreword penned by Pantera bassist Rex Brown.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist, who has written for Rolling Stone and Guitar Player, and has authored such books as ‘Iron Maiden: ’80 ’81,’ ‘The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion,’ ‘The Eric Carr Story,’ and ‘Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music.’ ‘Survival of the Fittest’ is his 16th book overall.

Available as a paperback version [616 pages, $24.99], a Kindle download [$9.99], and a Nook download [$9.99], ‘Survival of the Fittest’ helps put the ’90s and heavy metal all into perspective.
