Legendary Rockers KIX To Release Documentary DVD/CD Set On October 21st

Legendary Rockers KIX To Release Documentary DVD/CD Set On October 21st

KIX-2014-4

Platinum-selling Maryland hard rock icons, KIX will release CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX, a two-disc DVD/CD set, October 21, 2016 on Loud & Proud Records.  The 71-minute film is an in-depth look into KIX’s decision to record their first new album, 2014’s Rock Your Face Offin almost 20 years.

kix-cantstoptheshow-2016-1The DVD – WATCH THE TRAILER HERE – also features the making of the album from bassist Mark Schenker’s studio, interviews with the band as well as notable rock artists such as Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, Jeff LaBar of Cinderella, Share Ross of Vixen, Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, and more, key music industry veterans such as radio personality Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson of That Metal Show on VH1 Classic as well as Luc Carl and Keith Roth of Sirius/XM.  It also includes a rare appearance by producer Taylor Rhodes (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, KIX’s Hot Wire).

The CD, CAN’T STOP THE SHOW (LIVE) offers never-before-released live KIX tracks recorded over the last three years.  A bonus KIX logo sticker is inside the first manufacturing run, a special treat for KIX fans around the world, and each band member offers his own special contribution to the package’s booklet including vocalist Steve Whiteman’s rigorous exercise routine, cartoons by guitarist Brian “Damage” Forsythe, an essay by bassist Mark Schenker, a gear rundown by guitarist Ronnie “10/10” Younkins and a favorite recipe from drummer Jimmy Chalfant, aka “Chef Chocolate.”

“KIX is proud of the band’s legacy, but equally proud of our new chapter,” says Schenker.  “We had an opportunity to work with some great film makers, so we just let the cameras roll everywhere, and had so much fun putting the project together. There was a true outpouring of love and admiration from our fans and our peers after the release of Rock Your Face Off and luckily, we had documented the recording sessions on film. Now we are excited to share the process of making the new album with our loyal fans.  KIX thanks everyone involved and hopes everyone loves it as much as we loved making it!”

In 2014, KIX released their seventh full-length album, Rock Your Face Off (Loud & Proud Records) their first studio effort since 1995’s Show Business. The album debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hard Rock and Metal “chart, in the Top 50 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, #5 on the “Independent Albums “chart, #11 on the “Top Internet “chart, #17 on the “Top Rock Albums” chart, #27 on the “Indy/Small Chain Core Stores” chart and #33 on the “Physical” chart.  It also garnered rave reviews from publications such as Stereogum who said, “KIX have made an album with all the spirit and joy and craftsmanship that they always brought, an album with a hooks-per-minute ratio enough to grab you even if you never heard of them before reading this review.  The band plays with a sense of rhythmic push-pull that reminds you that people used to dance to this stuff, and that they still could, if they were so inclined…Its mere existence is an inspirational thing, and it’s a reminder that sometimes exploring new musical space isn’t the most important thing. Sometimes, songs are the most important thing.”

KIX will be performing select shows for the rest of the year, including a home town release event show in Baltimore, MD at Rams Head Live on September 24.  All tour dates can be found on the band’s website HERE. Pre-order CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX through Amazon HERE.

Greg Prato Releases ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’

Greg Prato Releases ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’

Another epic read from Greg Prato

Another epic read from Greg Prato

Since its inception in the late 1960’s, heavy metal has experienced quite a few ups and downs in popularity. But there was one specific decade that sticks out as the most troubling – the 1990’s. In what seemed like one fell swoop, a style of metal that had been popular for much of the 1980’s was rendered obsolete, and in its place, was a much more real, raw, and unique approach – detected in several new metal-based “sub-genres.” Add to it several changes in the music industry and media, and it appeared as if traditional metal may have met its expiration date…before several bands (and a certain traveling festival tour) helped put headbanging rock back on track.

Written by journalist/author Greg Prato, ‘Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990’s’ is the first book to focus entirely on this decade. Set in an oral history format, ‘Survival’ features over 80 interviews conducted exclusively for this book, including current or past members of Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Dream Theater, King’s X, Extreme, Winger, Cinderella, Living Colour, Faith No More, Primus, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Stone Temple Pilots, Kyuss, Danzig, Clutch, Life of Agony, Biohazard, Type O Negative, Within Temptation, Cradle of Filth, Death, Coal Chamber, and System of a Down (among many others), as well as Eddie Trunk, Riki Rachtman, and Lonn Friend. Also featured is a foreword penned by Pantera bassist Rex Brown.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist, who has written for Rolling Stone and Guitar Player, and has authored such books as ‘Iron Maiden: ’80 ’81,’ ‘The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion,’ ‘The Eric Carr Story,’ and ‘Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music.’ ‘Survival of the Fittest’ is his 16th book overall.

Available as a paperback version [616 pages, $24.99], a Kindle download [$9.99], and a Nook download [$9.99], ‘Survival of the Fittest’ helps put the ’90s and heavy metal all into perspective.

THAT METAL SHOW: Andy Biersack, Taime Downe & Mark Slaughter Guest On This Week’s Show!

that-metal-show-taime-slaughter-bbv

Episode 11 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming “That Metal Show” is the second-to-last new episode of the current season. Returning to the show this week is Faster Pussycat’s Taime Downe and making their TMS debuts are Black Veil Brides’ Andy Biersack and Slaughter’s Mark Slaughter. The guests sit down together with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine in a roundtable type setting; something the show has done a couple of times this season and has found to generate great conversations. Taime discusses his time in Faster Pussycat, working on a new album, and getting Eddie drunk on the recent Monsters Of Rock cruise. Andy talks about his love for “That Metal Show”, their recent appearance opening for Ozzy at Monsters Of Rock in Brazil, and unveils the new artwork and release date of their first-ever live DVD. Mark talks about being a member of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion and of course his band, Slaughter, as well as the release of his first solo album. Mark actually gives the entire audience a download card of the new release.  The all-new episode of “That Metal Show” airs this Saturday at 9:00PM ET/PT, repeating at 11:00PM ET/PT on VH1 Classic.

The episode also features the debut of Mike Orlando from Adrenaline Mob as the guest musician. Mike has appeared as a guest in the past but this is the first time he has played on the show. Mike talks about being on tour with Adrenaline Mob, the recent passing of drummer AJ Pero, the latest benefit show for AJ’s family, and a completed album he has in the can with AJ on drums.

Taime, Andy, and Mark “Put It On The Table” and realize when asked what the first song they ever learned was they all have a serious Kiss connection and appreciation. Eddie struggles through “Stump The Trunk” this week marking the return of Ms. Box Of Junk Jen after he went three for three last week. This week’s “Take It Or Leave It” centers on the recent trend of band’s airing their grievances in public evidenced by the recent statements from Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward of Black Sabbath. They all agree that social media, and the ease for artists to share their sides of the story, is best for the fans.

Checking in via “Metal Modem” this week is founding Judas Priest member, KK Downing. KK fills the panel in on what he’s been doing since leaving Priest, talks about some upcoming projects, and unveils his new cologne line, “Metal for Men”. This week’s “Throwdown” pits the legendary Judas Priest releasesBritish Steel against Screaming For Vengeance. When the panel deadlocks, they reach out to KK on the modem to give the definitive answer. No one argues with one of the creators of both albums when KK makes his pick.

“That After Show” this week talks about everyone’s pre-show rituals and warm-ups as Mike Orlando joins the panel. They reminisce about the most hammered they have ever been while performing and Andy recounts the time he broke his ribs during a promo performance in Los Angeles. Fans can watch all previous episodes and other exclusive bonus clips at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app as well as the new “That After Show” segment.

Season 14 has showcased some of the biggest names in music. This season featured Rush’s Geddy Lee, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Frank Bello/Charlie Benante/Scott Ian of Anthrax, John 5, Chris Jericho, Kerry King of Slayer, Dave Lombardo formerly of Slayer and now with Philm, Zakk Wylde, Michael Schenker, punk rock legend Marky Ramone, rap icon Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC, Gary Holt of Slayer/Exodus, Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless, Max Cavalera, Ace Frehley and Mark Farner. Next weeks’ final episode of Season 14 welcomes Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth of Overkill, Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot, and Billy Sheehan from The Winery Dogs/Mr. Big as the guest musician.

Known for having the best musicians in music perform each week, Season 14 was no exception showcasing the talents of Alex Skolnick of Testament, John 5 of Rob Zombie/John 5 Trio, Joel Hoekstra of Whitesnake, Frank Hannon of Tesla, the berserker Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society, double-neck shred-master Michael Angelo Batio, Rich Ward of Fozzy, Damon Johnson of Thin Lizzy/Black Star Riders, Nita Strauss from Alice Cooper, and Mike Orlando of Adrenaline Mob.

“That Metal Show” first premiered on VH1 Classic in November 2008 and since has become the only place for all things hard rock and heavy metal on cable television.  The show has been visited by some of the biggest names in the genres including members of Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Metallica, Aerosmith, Pantera, Kiss, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, Queensrÿche, Heart, and many more.

“That Metal Show” is a production of VH1 Classic. Lee Rolontz, Jeff Baumgardner, and Keshia Williams serve as executive producers for VH1.

THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Ace Freely, Mark Farner And Nita Strauss

THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Ace Freely, Mark Farner And Nita Strauss

TMS-week10-ace-2015

Episode 10 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming “That Metal Show” marks the return of Kiss original guitarist Ace Frehley and the debut of former Grand Funk Railroad singer and guitarist Mark Farner. Ace chats with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine about Kiss’s long overdue induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, being on stage with his former band mates, and his frustrations with the original Kiss lineup not performing together at the ceremony. Mark Farner shares stories of the early Grand Funk Railroad days, even telling about a time they opened for Led Zeppelin and how he was blown away watching them perform. He says it is still one of the best performances he has ever seen to this day.

The episode also features the debut of Nita Strauss from Alice Cooper as the guest musician. Nita is only the second female musician to grace the second stage. Nita tears it up on the guitar and also talks about playing with Alice Cooper, being discovered while performing the national anthem at an LA Kiss football game, and the solo album she is currently working on.

This week’s “Rank” segment finds Frehley creating the definitive list of the Kiss albums he performed on. He jokingly states that he couldn’t rank certain albums higher because his recollection of recording them was a blur. Eddie continues to impress the panel during this week’s “Stump The Trunk” and this week’s “Throwdown” puts the debut Led Zeppelin album against the debut Black Sabbath album. The panel is split but the audience declares a clear-cut winner between the two. The “TMS Top 5” takes a week off but “Take It Or Leave It” returns, as the topic is the recent announcement of the retirement of Twisted Sister.

Fans can watch all previous episodes and other exclusive bonus clips at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app as well as the new “That After Show” segment.

Season 14 has showcased some of the biggest names in music. THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Epic Jam Session With Kirk Hammett and Michael Schenker

That-metal-show-hammet-2015

Episode 9 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming “That Metal Show” marks another first for the critically acclaimed talk show. Ever since Kirk Hammett first picked up the electric guitar he dreamed of jamming one day with Michael Schenker. Well TMS makes it happen and the world’s most recognized heavy metal guitarist, Kirk Hammett, jams live on stage with UFO/Scorpions guitar legend, Michael Schenker, during this week’s episode. Hammett flew in for the sole purpose of appearing alongside his guitar idol on the show hosted by Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine. As Hammett states in two recent tweets this week on his twitter account, “Today I was in fanboy hero worship mode w/ @MW Schenker Thanks @ThatMetalShow!” and later adding, “Still wrapping my head around yesterday. Jamming w/ my guitar idol Michael Schenker, it was a mind bending, a truly inspirational experience!”. During the interview, both Kirk and Michael discuss their current projects, and Hammett updates us on the status of the next Metallica project.  During the “TMS Top 5” where the hosts discussed their Top 5 Michael Schenker UFO-era Songs, Hammett includes his Top 6 picks as well.

The episode features the debut of Damon Johnson from Black Star Riders as the guest musician who discusses the new Black Star Riders record and his time playing with Thin Lizzy. Johnson wows the crowd by showcasing his lap steel guitar playing abilities and lives up to the challenge of playing in front of Hammett and Schenker, leaving them impressed with his abilities. Johnson also tweeted about his experience on the show on how he felt watching the guitar legends play, “Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday afternoon…”

This week’s “Rank” segment finds Hammett ranking his favorite Metallica albums in order. Kirk even declares if bassist Cliff Burton had been alive for the…And Justice For All recording Cliff’s bass lines would have been heard throughout the album, a common complaint about that album. Eddie fights through another “Stump The Trunk” segment this week, but Ms. Box Of Junk Jen makes a few appearances. This week’s “Throwdown” puts UFO’s legendary live album Strangers In The Night against Thin Lizzy’s Live And Dangerous. The hosts, guests, and audience are split evenly down the middle when the dust settles after the two-minute debate.

Fans can watch all previous episodes and other exclusive bonus clips at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app as well as the new “That After Show” segment, which discusses the intricacies of Michael’s style of playing guitar, and Kirk Hammett tells the story of purchasing the legendary Peter Green Les Paul guitar, which was once owned by Gary Moore of Thin Lizzy fame, and now we know that Kirk keeps this prize by the entrance of his house so it is always close when he gets home.

Season 14 marks the return of some notable faces in hard rock/heavy metal and contains a large group of first timers as well. Some Season 14 guests will include “That Metal Show” alumni Ace Frehley, and Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot, along with first-time appearances for Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad and Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides.

THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Kerry King, Zakk Wylde and Lzzy Hale!

THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Kerry King, Zakk Wylde and Lzzy Hale!

TMS-lzzy-zakk-2015

Episode 8 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming “That Metal Show” is the heaviest show of the season as Kerry King of Slayer returns.  Kerry sits down with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine to discuss the upcoming Slayer album, getting the rust off for the upcoming summer tour, and even reveals some information about material for another record exclusively on the show.

The second guest on the episode welcomes Lzzy Hale of Halestorm to the set for the first time. Lzzy appeared on the show last season via the Metal Modem and talks about the new Halestorm album. They recorded the new album in a church in Nashville all playing together live, something they have never done before.

The episode features the debut of Zakk Wylde from Black Label Society as the guest musician. Zakk has been asked to perform on “That Metal Show” every season and finally in season 14, he obliged. Zakk wowed the crowd with playing abilities while showcasing his new custom audio equipment, Wylde Audio. In a first for the show, Zakk played out the final segment of the show with an extended off-the-cuff solo arrangement.

One of the episode highlights comes in the “Stump The Trunk” segment this week. The audience questions Eddie again, but this time also comes under fire with questions from Zakk himself, Joe Hottinger from Halestorm, and even Ed’s own mother gets a stump in.  “Take It Or Leave It” returns this week with the hosts debating the recent announcement of Skid Row’s new singer and they offer up their favorite new releases in the “Pick Of The Week.” The “TMS Top 5” looks at the Top 5 Zakk Wylde Songs and tracks like “Miracle Man,” “No More Tears,” “In This River,” and “Stillborn” all find their way in to the discussion.

Fans can watch all previous episodes and other exclusive bonus clips at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app as well as the new “That After Show” segment, which discusses the guests’ love of sports and the weirdest thing they have ever seen from the stage on tour.

Season 14 will mark the return of some notable faces in hard rock/heavy metal and contain a large group of first timers as well. Some Season 14 guests will include “That Metal Show” alumni Kirk Hammett, Michael Schenker, Ace Frehley, and Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot. This season will also first-time appearances for Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad and Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides.

THAT METAL SHOW: This Week’s Episode To Feature Chris Jericho, Max Cavalera And Billy Corgan

TMS-jericho-2015

As Season 14 of “That Metal Show” continues to roll on with all new episodes, VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming welcomes Chris Jericho of Fozzy, Max Cavalera of Soulfly, and Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins this week. The guests sit down together with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine in a roundtable type setting; something the show did earlier this season generating some hilarious discussions and opinions from three different genres and points of view.

The episode features the debut of Rich “The Duke” Ward from Fozzy as the guest musician. Rich demonstrates his guitar playing prowess and even crowd surfs at one point on top of an elated audience.

One of the episode highlights comes in the “Stump The Trunk” segment this week. Eddie proves his dominance yet again, but shenanigans ensue thanks to TMS alum Chris Jericho creating one of the funniest moments in the show’s history. “Put It On The Table” offers deeper insight into Chris, Max, and Billy when they each share the weirdest rumors they’ve heard about themselves. The “Throwdown” pits the two biggest MTV-era Scorpions albums against each other, Blackout against Love At First Sting and the hosts offer up their favorite new releases in the “Pick Of The Week”. Another episode highlight comes in the “TMS Top 5” as the hosts pick the Top 5 Better Live Songs (live version that is better than the recorded version) and is the probably the most agreeable they have ever been during this segment.

Fans can watch all previous episodes and other exclusive bonus clips at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app as well as the new “That After Show” segment.
