Anthem of The Peaceful Army: Greta Van Fleet To Release Debut Album On October 19th!

GRETA VAN FLEET – L-R: Danny Wagner, Sam Kiszka, Jake Kiszka, Josh Kiszka

Greta Van Fleet – Jake Kiszka/guitars, Sam Kiszka/bass & keys, Josh Kiszka/vocals, and Danny Wagner/drums – is very proud to announce the upcoming release of the band’s debut album, Anthem of The Peaceful Army, due out October 19 on Lava/Republic Records. The album is available for pre-order now by going HERE . Fans who pre-order the album will receive an instant grat track, the brand new song “Watching Over,” that you can check out here HERE.

Collectively written by all four band members, the ten original songs explore a variety of topics that include fresh starts, love, integrity, innocence, adventure, diversity and peace, the life cycle and its inherent responsibilities, courage, masked deceptions, revolution, and truth. Blending rock, soul and blues, Jake’s blazing guitar riffs, Josh’s soaring, powerful vocals, Danny’s thunderous drums, and Sam’s swaggering baselines and keys create a menagerie of musical elements throughout.

Anthem of the Peaceful Army was produced by Marlon Young, Al Sutton and Herschel Boone (The Rust Brothers) and recorded earlier this year at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan.

The first single from Anthem of the Peaceful Army, “When The Curtain Falls,” arrived at rock radio on August 15 and is already a Top 10 track with more than 13-million total audio streams. The song’s companion music video has surpassed 1.7-million views and can be seen HERE.

Music fans were first introduced to Greta Van Fleet in March 2017 with the release of the band’s debut single “Highway Tune” that held the #1 position on U.S. Rock Radio Charts for five consecutive weeks and on Canada’s Active Rock Radio Charts for nine straight weeks. For Greta Van Fleet, 2017 went on to be a wild ride of sold-out concerts in North America and Europe, glowing press, accolades from a slew of fellow artists from Elton John to Nikki Sixx to Justin Bieber, millions of YouTube video plays and Spotify streams, two #1 EPs, and most importantly, the genesis of an extraordinary connection with their fans.

We Will Stand Up In the Cold: Greta Van Fleet at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD

We Will Stand Up In the Cold: Greta Van Fleet at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD

Rock ‘n’ Roll music as a whole has been in a bit of a lull over the past few years, at least in the mainstream. Indie and pop rock had become the music of choice of most young adults, and rock radio itself has been filled with manufactured “jock rock” bands that all sound 100% identical. Rock music needs a shot in the arm, and as I have stated in the past, Greta Van Fleet is just the band we need to do that.

Hailing from Frankenmuth, Michigan, the brothers Kiszka (Jake, Josh, Sam) and friend, Danny Wagner, to bring back that smooth blues rock sound made popular by the likes of Zeppelin, The Who, etc. Last summer I had the incredible honor of watching these young men open for The Struts. They absolutely blew me away. Their sound was something I hadn’t heard from any modern band since maybe Wolfmother. I immediately purchased their four-song EP, “Black Smoke Rising” and played it out non-stop. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.

After picking up and selling out multiple headlining shows, at the end of 2017 Greta Van Fleet released a double EP titled “From the Fires”. The disc included the four incredible tracks from the original EP along with four new cover tracks showcasing the bands earliest musical influences. Our review of that EP can be found here >

Now it’s 2018, and on the back of a mere 8 song double EP, Greta Van Fleet is selling out venue after venue. What is it about their sound that makes it so infectious? Are they truly the next big thing or a simple novelty “nostalgia” act? Spoiler alert, these guys are the real deal. Now join me as I had the chance to check out Greta Van Fleet’s headlining show at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Maryland.

As I first enter the venue I can already feel the magic in the air. This is definitely unlike most of the shows I attend. Usually when I look at a lineup I know the exact demographic of who is going to be in attendance. That wasn’t the case with tonight. True rock music transcends across the population. It breaks barriers, and this was the case at Rams Head as people from all walks of life have gathered to have a fantastic night filled with incredible tunes.

When I first heard that “Dorothy” was opening I was a little hesitant. Two years ago I caught her set at a bar in Dewey Beach, Delaware and was really underwhelmed. It felt as though she was trying to grasp onto the generic “I’m a badass chick” shtick that is ever so popular with female fronted bands. I felt as though she had no real identity, she was just the next manufactured leading lady for *insert backing band here*. So when she took the stage on this night I was in complete shock. Gone was the skin tight leather and multiple crotch chops throughout the set. As she let the incense burn from her fingertips she had the crowd in her grasp. A group that I had once referred to as “Halestorm-light” had completely won me over. Dorothy Martin’s movements and new vocal stylings reminded me of a reincarnated Janis Joplin, now that’s some praise! They released their latest album, “28 Days in the Valley” this past March, I highly recommend everyone pick it up.

I was in my glory as this was one of the few nights where only one supporting act stood between myself and the headliner. I know this may sound negative, but hey I work at a school, late nights aren’t what they used to be. At about 9:30 Greta Van Fleet took the stage. Little did I know that this was going to be much less of a rock concert, and more like a life changing experience.

As the boys first took the stage you just knew you were in for a “once in a lifetime” show. Jake (guitar) and Sam (bass) begin dueling that opening lick for the bands early single, “Highway Tune”. There I stand, mouth agape as Josh (vocals) grabs the mic and dives into that opening howl. To say that I had chills would be underselling it. From the first song to the final song, every track was played as if it was their last. It felt as though at the end of every song they were going to give the old, “Thank you and good night”! Every song shined. It wasn’t just a concert, it was a cohesive set that stood as a whole. Each sound seamlessly blending into the next, all with Wagner (drummer) in the driver’s seat making sure the group remained on the road. While still being a young band, the four command an attention like no other modern group. If they walk into a room, you better make damn sure your eyes are on them. From the opening track the band took the audience through many of our personal favorites, a couple of cover songs, and some unreleased material I hope to hear very soon. The boys closed out the night with fan favorites, “Black Smoke Rising” and “Safari Song.”

I cannot praise these guys enough! Greta Van Fleet is a band unlike any other in the current rock community, and they’re here to say. To see the progress they’ve made in less than a year is mind blowing. I could be prouder of this hard working band.

Greta Van Fleet will be touring throughout the summer in both the US and Europe. For our local fans, they’ll be around the DC area come July. However, both nights are already sold out! For the latest up to date news on what GVF will be doing next be sure to check out the bands official website at www.gretavanfleet.com.

Greta Van Fleet Announce First 2018 Tour Dates, Enter Studio For Debut Album

Greta Van Fleet Announce First 2018 Tour Dates, Enter Studio For Debut Album

L-R: Danny Wagner (drums), Josh Kiszka (vocals), Sam Kiszka (bass, keyboards), Jake Kiszka (guitars)

Greta Van Fleet, who took the 2017 music scene by storm with its dynamic rock ‘n’ roll debut single “Highway Tune” claiming the #1 spot at Rock Radio for five consecutive weeks, amassing 10-million-plus Spotify plays and 6.8-million YouTube views in 2017 alone, selling out every single one of its headline dates in advance, and being named Loudwire’s  “Best New Artist,” will kick off its 2018 tour schedule at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday, April 13.  The band’s itinerary will include a slew of other major outdoor music festivals as well as headline dates that will see them playing to larger-capacity venues and multiple nights in some cities.  Five of the dates – Houston, Dallas, Nashville and two nights in Detroit – went on sale last week and all sold out in under 15-minutes.  Tickets for Greta Van Fleet’s headline dates for this leg go on sale to the public this Friday, January 26; log on to www.gretavanfleet.com for all ticket purchasing info.

“We love making music and we love playing shows, but we never expected anything like the attention we’ve been getting,” said bassist Sam Kiszka.  “We are truly humbled by the response we’ve gotten, and are very excited to get back on the road and play for our fans.”

Prior to the tour, the Frankenmuth, MI-based Greta Van Fleet – 21-year old vocalist Josh Kiszka, brothers Jake (guitar, also 21) and Sam (bass, keys, 18), and longtime family friend Danny Wagner (drums, also 18) – are spending January and February recording its debut full-length album anticipated to be released late Spring/early Summer (Lava/Republic Records).  The album will be recorded in Nashville and Detroit and produced by Al Sutton and Marlon Young, the duo that helmed the band’s critically-acclaimed, chart-topping/breakout EP Black Smoke Rising (4/21/17) and the follow up From The Fires double EP (11/10/17).  For the album, the band has an archive of songs written over the past few years as well as brand new material penned late last year when they spent a week in the Tennessee woods.  So, fans can look forward to the next evolution of, as Revolver magazine put it, Greta Van Fleet’s “high-octane, soul-and R&B-influenced riff rock.”

“Each of us has his own set of influences so that brings a great diversity to the music we make,” said Jake.  “Every one of our songs has its own unique complexities and we’d like for the full album to showcase that diversity, let people see what we can really do.”

Credited as the breakout rock band of 2017, today Greta Van Fleet – Josh Kiszka/ vocals, Jake Kiszka/guitars, Sam Kiszka/bass & keys, Danny Wagner/drums – celebrates the release of its double EP From The Fires  (Lava/ Republic Records), available digitally and as a physical disc.  For a taste, check out the brand new “A Change Is Gonna Come” here.  Use this link to access the entire release via outlets like iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, more.

The eight-track From The Fires combines four new tracks recorded in September at Rust Belt Studios in Detroit – two GVF original songs, “Talk on the Street” and “Edge of Darkness,” and two covers, Sam Cooke’s emotional “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Meet On The Ledge” by the late 60’s folk rock band Fairport Convention – with the four songs from the band’s debut EP, Black Smoke Rising, released earlier this year.  From The Fires was produced by the same duo that helmed Black Smoke Rising, Al Sutton and Marlon Young.   As Greta Van Fleet vocalist Josh Kiszka said, “These eight songs belong together as they share a theme of basic humanity.”

The ‘From The Fires’ track listing is as follows:
1. Safari Song
2. Edge of Darkness
3. Flower Power
4. A Change Is Gonna Come
5. Highway Tune
6. Meet On The Ledge
7. Talk On the Street
8. Black Smoke Rising

The four new recordings shine a light on some of the band members’ earliest musical influences, the blues, soul and funk of artists like Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, Sam & Dave, Howlin’ Wolf and Wilson Pickett.  As Screamer magazine said in its From The Fires review, “These new tunes show how much Greta Van Fleet is really capable of and how deep the talent runs.”

According to Josh, “Edge of Darkness” is about “the bravery behind the compassion that we feel for each other.  One of the lyrics is ‘I’ve got love in my heart,’ and I think, as a global community, it’s a spiritual thing to share all that we have together.  Giving love is giving power.”

Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” is one that has special meaning for the band.  When Josh and twin brother/guitarist Jake first heard it, they thought it was a song they’d like to cover, but never did.  Fast forward a few years and ironically, co-producer Marlon Young suggested they cover it for this release.  “All of us are very affected by oppression of any type,” said Josh, “cultural, racial, sexual.  I’ve never experienced what Sam Cooke did so I have to admit, it was a little difficult for me, getting behind the mic, but I did it because singing this song meant a lot to me.”  As Icon vs Icon wrote about this track, “This is where the group truly shows they are like no other.  This isn’t simply a rock song, or even blues, it’s a gospel ballad that will move even the toughest soul.”

Josh has always connected with folk songs, with their beautiful melodies and harmonies and is a big fan of late ’60s folk-rock groups like Spyro Gyra, Pentangle and Fairport Convention.  “Meet On The Ledge was composed by Fairport Convention’s Richard Thompson.  “I was on a train going to New York,” he recalls, “and on the way, I listened to an entire decade of Fairport Convention’s music.  ‘Meet On The Ledge’ was the fourth or fifth track I heard and it caught me by surprise.  I was absolutely entranced, the verse and chorus blew my mind.”

About “Talk On The Street,” Josh describes it as “a fun song, full of catchy riffs and dynamic drums, kind of an ambiguous wild ride, a real rock’n’roll song.”

ABOUT GRETA VAN FLEET
Greta Van Fleet is four young musicians, brothers Josh (vocals), Jake (guitar) and Sam (bass/keys) Kiszka, and best friend Danny Wagner (drums).  Josh and Jake have just turned 21, Danny and Sam are 18.  They’re all from the tiny Michigan hamlet of Frankenmuth known for its family-style chicken dinners and the world’s largest Christmas store.  All four were raised on their parents’ extensive vinyl collections (shared influences are Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, The Who, Jimi Hendrix), and were encouraged to be creative, daring and innovative.  Each band member has killer musical chops and Josh has a voice that is simply jaw dropping.  The band is making some of the most exciting, high-energy, sweaty, sexy rock’n’roll heard in a long time, and are bound and determined to bring real rock’n’roll back to the mainstream.

With their debut single “Highway Tune” spending five weeks as the #1 track at Mainstream Rock radio, more than 4.5-million YouTube views for the companion music video, 7.4-million Spotify plays, their first-ever tour of the U.S. completely sold out, and spectacular praise from the media, Greta Van Fleet is – in just a few months – as hot a developing band as one can be.
