Off the beaten path in Washington, D.C. is one of the world’s greatest music venues — the 9:30 Club. It’s the most-attended music club of its size in the world – a 1200-person venue where world-famous artists have started their careers, refined their sounds, and played legendary shows. Now it’s home to TV’s most groundbreaking music show.

Each cinematic, one-hour episode of “Live At 9:30” will feature a collection of acts from different genres, interspersed with insightful and entertaining interviews, short films, and comedic bits. In a word: variety; variety that people will be talking about. Filmed unobtrusively with more than a dozen cameras, including hidden GoPros and an airborne cable-cam, “Live At 9:30” will be unlike any music show on TV today.

The first three episodes of the 12-episode premiere season will feature performances by Garbage, The Arcs, Tove Lo, Ibeyi, El Vy, MisterWives, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Frank Turner, MS MR, Cold War Kids, Youth Lagoon, and Jess Glynne. “We’ve been approached countless times to do a TV show here, and we’ve always passed,” said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. and co-owner of the 9:30 Club. “But ‘Live At 9:30’ is a great opportunity to work with people we trust to bring music variety to life in a way no one has even attempted. When I said we had no interest in just another concert program, they totally got it. They have come up with a truly entertaining bunch of new ideas on how to change the way people watch live concert shows.”

“I’ve been going to the 9:30 Club for 20 years, and my favorite concert memories are from here,” said Michael Holstein, executive producer of ‘Live At 9:30’. “This club is pure magic. Seeing how the community has rallied around this show – artists, managers, the D.C. Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment and more – that really drives home that this is much more than just a music club. For the 9:30 Club to trust us to make a TV show about this amazing institution is an awesome opportunity and responsibility.”

‘Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90)’ To Hit DVD On September 18th

‘Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90)’ To Hit DVD On September 18th

'Salad Days'

‘Salad Days’

Scott Crawford and Jim Saah’s Salad Days: A Decade of Punk In Washington, DC (1980-90) has been selling out screenings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, and more. The documentary film that examines the early DIY punk scene in the Nation’s Capital. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows-without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny.

Contextually, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry’s subsequent implosion). Thirty years later, DC’s original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power of community and the strength of conviction.

Director/writer Scott Crawford is a music journalist, musician, and graphic designer. As a teenager in the DC suburbs, he started a fanzine called Metrozine that documented much of what was happening in the DC hardcore punk scene in the 1980s.

“The DC punk music scene that I grew up with in the 1980s has always been a big part of who I am,” says Scott. “I interviewed a lot of these bands for the first time over 30 years ago while doing a fanzine. Approaching them all again decades later offered a type of perspective and reflection that I wanted to capture in a film.”

Crawford was also quoted in both Dance of Days and Banned in DC – the two most definitive books on the early DC punk scene. In 2001, he launched Harp Magazine and served as its Editor-in-Chief for over seven years. Crawford also launched the online music portal Blurt in 2009.

Serving as Director of Photography, Saah is a native of Washington, DC who has worked professionally in photography and video for over 25 years. He has shot for a variety of publications and websites ranging from the Washington Post to Rolling Stone. He’s also an experienced videographer whose credits range from union organizing films to music documentaries. Recent films he has worked on include movies about the bands Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, and Eddie Vedder.

On a side note, OBEY and Shepard Fairey were heavily influenced by the DC hardcore scene. Shepard has used numerous DC hardcore legends such as Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi, Henry Rollins of State of Alert and Black Flag, and Bad Brains in his artwork. When hearing that Crawford and Saah were planning a West Coast release of their film, OBEY wanted to get involved. They created this T-shirt which is on sale now (along with other cool Salad Days merchandise) HERE.

Quick Facts:

Salad Days reached its Kickstarter goal in 6 days.

* Features never-before-seen photographs and performance footage of dozens of DC punk bands.

* Interviews with Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, John Stabb, Thurston Moore, Dave Grohl, and others

* Original score by guitarist Michael Hampton (SOA, Faith, Embrace, One Last Wish)

‘Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone’ To Be Released In April 2012

‘Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone’ To Be Released In April 2012

'Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone'

The ultimate music autobiography arrives at last in the form of Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone out nationwide on April 2nd, 2012 from Abrams Image. THE definitive book on The Ramones, Commando is the first and only truly autobiographical work written by a founding member of the legendary Ramones chronicling his life, and the story of the band itself, from start to finish. Johnny authors a brutally honest and detailed firsthand account of the band, from inception and their humble beginnings at CBGB in 1974 all the way through to their retirement in 1996 and beyond. This is the real deal, straight from the source—a razor sharp stiletto from the grave delivering the story that has never been told before.

“Johnny Ramone’s autobiography is a no holds bared, straight forward book written in a no-nonsense style that is Johnny personified. His story is written in his own actual words, so the reader gets an insight into what made him the unique, charismatic and exciting individual that he was. It also gives a great view of the Ramones from Johnny’s perspective.” – Tommy Ramone

The Ramones emerged from New York City’s underground rock scene in the mid 70?s to become a global, genre-defining force for rock & roll. Johnny Ramone, (born John Cummings 1948–2004), found his reprieve from a dead-end life through rock and roll as a founding member of one of the most influential bands of all time. Despite his ultimate success with The Ramones, Johnny never really strayed from his working-class roots and attitude. The tough guy from the streets of Queens assumed the role of the tough guy in the band who kept The Ramones focused and moving forward, ultimately securing the seminal band’s place in rock history. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 18, 2002, and nearly a decade later, the seminal band was awarded a Grammy for lifetime achievement.

Commando is Johnny’s story and the story of The Ramones told in his own words. Insightful and introspective, the 176-page, visually driven memoir walks through Johnny’s days as a founding member of one of the world’s most iconic bands and also chronicles his personal life beyond the stage. Never afraid to speak his mind, it includes raw and unflinching opinions of the band as well as his fellow peers in music and even the struggle with cancer that ultimately took him. Grounded in decades of his own meticulous records and notes, Johnny also shares his personal assessment of The Ramones catalog, several of his brilliantly eccentric Top Ten Lists, rare historical artifacts and scores of personal and professional photos, most of which have never been seen before.

Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone will be released in stores and online nationwide on April 2nd, 2012 from Abrams Image for $24.95 with pre-ordered copies available through the Johnny Ramone Army Online Store. E-book will be available on Kindle, iPad, Nook, Kobo and Sony Reader. Global demand for the book is already such that rights have been pre-sold in four different languages throughout Europe and Brazil with more soon to be announced.

Among other incredible offerings, “Commando” includes a foreword written by sole surviving founding member, drummer, Tommy Ramone, and an epilogue written by Johnny’s close friend (and daughter to the King), Lisa Marie Presley. “Commando” was edited by longtime Ramones collaborator John Cafiero, (who also contributed an afterword to the book), with co-editors Steve Miller and Henry Rollins.

Don Letts’ ‘PUNK: Attitude’ To Be Reissued On DVD In January 2011!

In the mid-1970s, a revolution was ignited on the streets of New York and London. Almost overnight, punk shattered the status quo and continued to impact all future generations of youth culture. On January 11, 2010, Shout! Factory will release the long out-of-print documentary PUNK: Attitude.

Directed by Don Letts, the film and its extensive bonus features, chronicle the origin of punk music and its socio-cultural and musical impact through interviews with key figures such as Henry Rollins, Thurston Moore, Jello Biafra, Chrissie Hynde and more. A must-have for fans of punk music, documentary aficionados and DVD collectors, the two-disc set of PUNK: Attitude is priced for everyone to own at $19.93.

With a cast of historic and modern figures in popular culture, the documentary ventures beyond the hype and explores the way punk music redefined popular music and fashion while legitimizing an independent, do-it-yourself attitude that inspired an entire generation of musicians, filmmakers, poets, photographers, fashion designers and graphic artists.

“With hindsight we are able to recognize it as part of an ongoing movement of counterculture,” says filmmaker Don Letts adding, “It is in that spirit that I made this film, not as a nostalgic look back, but rather a way to move forward. After all, if it happened before, it can happen again.”

PUNK: Attitude was officially released April 25, 2005 at the Tribeca Film Festival and later aired to critical acclaim on IFC. The DVD-set has long been out of print.

E1 Entertainment Bringing Rock N’ Roll Horror Flick ‘Suck’ To The US

E1 Entertainment Bringing Rock N’ Roll Horror Flick ‘Suck’ To The US

Leading independent distributor E1 Entertainment (E1) has added rock-n-roll vampire musical “Suck” to its growing library of horror titles in the U.S. E1 will manage distribution across multiple platforms including home video, VOD, digital and TV sales.

E1 will also partner with D&E Entertainment for a one-night-only U.S. theatrical screening of “Suck” in September that will be followed by home video and digital distribution prior to Halloween.

The film follows a down and out band, ironically known as The Winners, that are desperately seeking a record deal and will do anything to make it big. After a life-changing encounter with a vampire, they rocket to stardom only to discover that fame and fortune are not all they are cracked up to be.

After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Suck” made its U.S. debut at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin earlier this year. It is directed by Canadian Rob Stefaniuk (“Phil the Alien”) who also stars along with Jessica Pare (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), Malcolm McDowell (“The Book of Eli”) and Dave Foley (“The Kids in the Hall”) and features some the music industry’s biggest names including Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Moby and Alice Cooper.

E1 has been actively acquiring content rights for the U.S. market and has established a comprehensive, national distribution network. “Suck” is the latest in a series of titles that E1 will be distributing across multiple platforms. Along with home and digital distribution, E1 supports some releases with theatrical distribution including Taylor Hackford’s “Love Ranch” starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci, which is now playing in select theatres nationwide.

The acquisition was negotiated by Sejin Park, VP of Worldwide Acquisitions for E1, and Tim Brown of Joker Films. “Suck” is the latest addition to E1’s growing U.S. horror catalogue which also includes “Parasomnia,” a stylish horror/thriller from director William Malone (“House on Haunted Hill,” “Masters of Horror”) and “Don’t Look Up,” a remake of Hideo Nakata’s horror classic from award-winning Hong Kong filmmaker Fruit Chan (“Dumplings”).

Synopsis
Seemingly doomed to road trip doldrums and dives, the band The Winners break their slump when their female bass player disappears one night with a studly, stylin’ vampire. She returns charged with sexual charisma that creates audience frenzy and eventually ensnares the rest of the band. Their “hook” launches them to fame. But fame turns out to be a different kind of Hell than AC/DC promised.

Following an “incident” on a national radio show with “Rockn’ Roger”, The Winners hit mega-stardom beyond their wildest dreams. But Joey is haunted by an eerie bartender with a dark secret. And legendary vampire hunter Eddie Van Helsing is on their tail tracking them down despite his fear of the dark. But when a veteran music producer calls them on becoming a vampire freak show, their rock ’n roll bubble bursts.

Fans can check out the official Suck website at this location and check out some photos of the rock icons from the film below!
