JOE PERRY–legendary guitarist, co-founding member, principal songwriter and co-producer of Aerosmith–is readying his new solo album SWEETZERLAND MANIFESTO for release on January 19, 2018.

Due out on his own Roman Records imprint (distributed worldwide by AMPED Distribution), SWEETZERLAND MANIFESTO marks JOE’s sixth solo album and is comprised of 10 new tracks. The album features guest appearances from a long list of JOE’s friends, colleagues and rock and roll icons.  Highlights include “Aye, Aye, Aye,” which JOE co-wrote with the track’s vocalist Robin Zander, and three collaborations with David Johansen, who sings “I Wanna Roll,” “Haberdasher Blues,” and “I’m Going Crazy,” plus as many co-writes with Terry Reid whose lead vocals light up “I’ll Do Happiness,” (with Zak Starkey on drums), “Sick & Tired” and “Won’t Let Me Go.”

SWEETZERLAND MANIFESTO was recorded at Studio 1480 in Los Angeles and produced by JOE PERRY and Bruce Witkin, with Johnny Depp serving as executive producer and additional help from Jack Douglas who co-wrote and co-produced a number of tracks.  It was engineered by Witkin and Tony Perry.  The album was mixed by Tony Perry with Ari Blitz serving as assistant mix engineer at After Master in Los Angeles.  On the album, JOE also teams up with sons Tony and Roman on “Spanish Sushi,” which was produced and arranged by The Perry Boys with JOE on guitars and bass, Roman adding synthesizer programming and Tony handling drum programming.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what songs people gravitate to because there’s such a wide variety of tunes,” JOE notes.

The SWEETZERLAND MANIFESTO track listing is as follows:

I’ll Do Happiness (featuring Terry Reid)
Aye, Aye, Aye (featuring Robin Zander)

Hollywood Vampires Announce 18 North American Tour Dates

hollywoodvampires-2015-1

Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup whose core members are Alice CooperJohnny Depp and Joe Perry, have just announced dates for their North American tour this summer.  The musicians supporting the high profile rockers include drummer Matt Sorum (the Cult, Guns N’ Roses), guitarist Tommy Henriksen (Alice Cooper’s band), Bruce Witkin (Johnny Depp’s group the Kids) and Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots).

How it all began…
In 1972, on the Sunset Strip at a club called the Rainbow Bar & Grill, the Hollywood Vampires were born in the upstairs bar.  It was a gathering place for rock stars living in or passing through L.A.  “To join the club, one simply had to out drink all of the members,” says Alice Cooper, a founding member of the Vampires.  “I would walk in on a typical night,” Alice says, “and John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon—who would usually be in a costume like a maid or a chauffeur—Bernie Taupin, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz would be there. The next week might be Bernie Taupin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz.”

Roughly four years ago, Alice Cooper and good friend Johnny Depp got together and decided the spirit of the Hollywood Vampires should live again (minus the drinking).  An environment for great artists to hang, laugh and play together. The Hollywood Vampires lives again with the release of the Hollywood Vampires new album.  Alice and Johnny were joined by Joe Perry, who is an old friend of both of them, and with producer Bob Ezrin, the recording began: a tribute to the original Hollywood Vampires.  The new album was released on September 11th, 2015 and all artist proceeds are being donated to MusiCares.

Now, returning to where it once began, the Hollywood Vampires (Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry) have announced today two shows at the notorious Sunset Strip music venue, The Roxy.  This will mark the Hollywood Vampires only U.S. appearances on September 16 and 17, and will surely be the most sought after ticket in town. Joining the Hollywood Vampires live will be Matt Sorum on drums, Duff McKagan on bass, Tommy Henriksen on guitar, and Bruce Witkin on piano and guitar. Tickets are on sale on August 14 for the September 16th show at http://ticketf.ly/1EdJvSI and September 17th show at http://ticketf.ly/1W5TvIT.

Additionally on September 24, in what will be their only international appearance, the band will head to Brazil for “Rock in Rio.” Before that show, the band will partner with Starkey Hearing Foundation, an organization that has provided more than 1.8 million free hearing aids to people in need in more than 100 countries, to offer and fit hearing aids to more than 150 people in need.   After the hearing aid fittings, the Hollywood Vampires and Starkey Hearing Foundation will bring a number of individuals to the show so they can hear music for the first time in their lives.

“Hearing connects us to life, our families and to the world around us,” said Bill Austin, founder of Starkey Hearing Foundation. “It’s a precious gift, and we are excited to work with the Hollywood Vampires to introduce so many to the world of sound and help them hear music for the first time.”

HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES: Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry’s Supergroup Announces Debut Album

hollywoodvampires-2015-1

In 1972, on the Sunset Strip at a club called the Rainbow Bar & Grill, the Hollywood Vampires were born in the upstairs bar.  It was a gathering place for the rock stars living in or passing through L.A.  “To join the club, one simply had to out drink all of the members,” says Alice Cooper, a founding member of the Vampires.  “I would walk in on a typical night,” Alice says, “and John LennonHarry Nilsson, Keith Moon—who would usually be in a costume like a maid or a chauffeur—Bernie Taupin, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz would be there. Three years ago, Alice and good friend Johnny Depp got together and decided the spirit of the Hollywood Vampires should live again (minus the drinking).  An environment for great artists to hang, laugh and play together. The Hollywood Vampires live again with the release of the Hollywood Vampires new album.  Alice and Johnny were joined by Joe Perry, who is an old friend of both of them, and the recording began: a tribute to the original Hollywood Vampires.

For the next two years, Alice, Joe and Johnny, joined by producer Bob Ezrin and an amazing group of modern day vampires, including Perry FarrellDave Grohl, Sir Paul McCartneyJoe Walsh, Slash, Robbie KriegerZak StarkeyBrian Johnson and Kip Winger, recorded tracks by their dead friends and heroes.  Also included are two original songs that tell the story of the Vampires, one of which, “Raise The Dead,” has an intro by Sir Christopher Lee, recorded just prior to his death.

Hollywood Vampires

Hollywood Vampires

The album package, an antique book, was created by noted men’s fashion designer (and rock fan) John Varvatos in his signature vintage style.  Alice and Varvatos, both Detroit natives, have been partners in fashion for several years with Alice lending his classic rock style as a brand ambassador.

A sneak peek at the liner notes, penned by original Hollywood Vampire Bernie Taupin, “I’m not here to defend their vices. Over-indulgence of any sort does not ultimately constitute for a healthy mind and body. And while on the periphery of those involved, wives may have come and gone, career choices may have been deemed dubious, and heartbreak in some cases stalked a dark corridor, but in the lair of the Hollywood Vampires only joy and laughter reigned.”

“I’m not completely sure what constituted bad behavior back then, but in this lair it existed in a bubble, a hermetically sealed dome of fun. It may not have been the round table at the Algonquin, but these were witty, intelligent guys who often got raucous and loud, but rest assured there were no bystanders or animals hurt in the making of the Hollywood Vampires.”

All artist proceeds will be donated to MusiCares.

Director Lee Hirsch Discusses The Journey of Making His “Bully” Documentary

Director Lee Hirsch Discusses The Journey of Making His “Bully” Documentary

Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. The new documentary film “BULLY”, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, brings human scale to this startling statistic, offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families. “BULLY” is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, BULLY opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole. Icon Vs. Icon’s Jason Price recently caught up with director Lee Hirsch to discuss the origins of the film, it’s impact on audiences, his battles with the MPAA and much more.

Hello, Lee! Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us about your film today.

Hey, man! How are you? Thank you so much for talking to me! It’s my pleasure!

I wanted to give our readers a little background on you. What originally intrigued you about the world of filmmaking and made you pursue it as a career?

It really grew out of my political activism. My first film was about the power of music in the South African freedom struggle. I spent the last few years of high school very, very engaged there. I think it was the idea of, “Where do I evolve from someone who goes to protests and engages at that level to being able to become part of the conversation and to be able to tell stories that will move people?”

In Theaters April 13th!

“Bully” is a very powerful piece of filmmaking. What was the catalyst that inspired you to make such a thought provoking film?

It was very much inspired by the fact that I was bullied. I felt for many, many years that this was a film I wanted to make at some point. It took a while to get the courage up, figure out how to make it and put a team together. It was that plus this idea that inherent in this story is this access to what it is to step up and make the choice to stand up for somebody. That is an idea I have been exploring in my work throughout my career. I also thought there was a real need for this film because there really hadn’t been a major documentary which took us inside that world and gave us that window. Those are some of the key motivators.

How did you find the kids and families affected by this topic who are featured in the film? How did that come about?

It came about in very different ways. We met Kelby through her mom posting on Ellen DeGeneres’ website, along with many other families we reached out to. That is how we met the Johnsons. For the Longs and the Smalleys, whose children had committed suicide, we read about. With the Longs, we had read about the town hall meeting that they were trying to organize and we reached out to them. With the Smalleys, I was very nearby shooting another story and we were able to get permission to come and meet them and film the funeral. That is how the relationship began. It was very, very hard and very emotional. With Ja’Maya, I had read about what had happened on her school bus. The narrative in the press was that this was a story about a hero who had tackled this crazy girl. For me, I wanted to understand why a 14-year-old girl had pulled a gun on her bus and what was happening to get to that point. With Alex, we were given access to film inside the school system, which was really the big breakthrough for this film. So, we met Alex on the first day of school.

Did anyone have any reservations in sharing their story for this documentary?

I am sure everybody had reservations. I can’t imagine someone being approached by a filmmaker and not thinking very carefully about it. With Kelby, they really wanted to tell their story. With the Longs and the Smalleys, they really wanted to get their story out and have their voice be heard. With Alex, we really had to try and understand what he was going through and to get to know him and his family. It was a relationship that we built over time. But we always began with my story about how I had been bullied and why I was doing this. I asked the families to be partners and really participate and really choose it. That was really important part of our relationship as things developed.

How do you feel the film impacted the lives of the subjects of the film?

I think it is great and I feel that they have such a voice now and it has been wonderful. Ja’Maya and her mom have chosen to not be out on the publicity tour but they really love the film. I don’t know that I feel that it has made a real impact for Ja’Maya in a positive way. With Alex and Kelby, it is just extraordinary to watch them grow into these incredible role models and youth advocates. It has been so incredible and every minute of seeing their journey has been deeply gratifying.

As the filmmaker, how has this amazing journey impacted you?

Wow! Ask me in a year! [laughs] It has been exciting and it has been overwhelming. I am really grateful for the support we have had and the way people have been responding to the film. It has been crazy trying to keep up with all of the press but we are very, very grateful the film is receiving the attention it has.

Lee Hirsch

What was the biggest challenge for you as a filmmaker from the initial idea for the film to the completed project?

I think the biggest challenge was telling the story, getting it right and the process of finding your film’s voice. It was a very emotional and difficult film to craft. I couldn’t say there was one particular piece. It was weeks and weeks and weeks of all-nighters to get to the finish line. We showed up at the Tribeca Film Festival with our film, which we had finished only eight hours before, for our world premiere. It was a marathon!

Is this a subject you can see yourself revisiting again in film form in the future?

Probably not. I feel like there are other stories I want to tell and that this movement has a lot of fire. We have great people and incredible organizations working on the issue. There are other stories that will be told but I feel I have done my piece.

There was a little controversy surrounding the film and its rating. I am sure that can be a mixed blessing but I was curious to hear your thoughts on it.

You know, I think I stand today having gone through an extraordinary process with the MPAA. I have been incredibly moved by the power of Katy Butler’s decision to put up a petition on www.change.org to capture the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people. I also feel that a lot of ink has been spilled to talk about this and the MPAA, in some ways, may be a different organization today as a result of it. I feel victorious! I feel we were able to retain the scene they wouldn’t let us have and it was a victory for independent filmmakers as well as a victory for the advocates who fought for this. It was a wonderful experience and it was great to see so many celebrities support the film. That meant the world but just getting into the petition and reading the comments and the stories — the outpouring of sharing was extraordinary!

Obviously, you are in the thick of it right now with the film’s release and press tour. Have you given any thought to what you might like your next project to be?

I’m looking for a comedy! [laughs]

I can respect that! [laughs] Thank you for your time today and for putting together such a thought provoking film. Best of luck to you in the future, sir!

Thank you very much! I appreciate your support!

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn’t address in their own teen years – and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind. The film is directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. The screenplay is by Michael Bacall. Story by Michael Bacall & Jonah Hill. Based on the Television Series created by Patrick Hasburgh & Stephen J. Cannell. Produced by Neal H. Moritz and Stephen J. Cannell.

First Look At HBO’s ‘Life’s Too Short’ Series Starring Warwick Davis!

First Look At HBO’s ‘Life’s Too Short’ Series Starring Warwick Davis!

He’s a self-aggrandizing actor who’s appeared in some of Hollywood’s biggest hits. But now his career is on the wane, and he’ll do anything to reverse his fortunes.

From Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, LIFE’S TOO SHORT is a faux documentary starring Warwick Davis (“Willow,” the “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars” films) as a fictionalized version of himself: a little person who’s down on his luck, desperately trying to hustle and connive his way back into the spotlight. The comedy series kicks off its seven-episode season SUNDAY, FEB. 19 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), following the third-season debut of the comedy series “Eastbound & Down,” with other episodes debuting subsequent Sundays at the same time, exclusively on HBO.

In LIFE’S TOO SHORT, actor Warwick Davis is struggling to jumpstart his fading career and maintain his status as Britain’s “go-to” little person. He runs a talent agency for fellow showbiz Little People called “Dwarves for Hire,” though he often takes the best roles for himself, and serves as vice chairman of a society for small people, though he’d rather be chairman. Davis also seeks advice from his old pals Gervais and Merchant (playing versions of themselves) in hopes that their A-list celebrity connections will aid his career.

Each episode features cameos by top stars, including Johnny Depp, Liam Neeson, Sting, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Carell and Kat Deeley. Other cast regulars include Jo Enright as Davis’ soon to be ex-wife Sue, Rosamund Hanson as his dim-witted assistant Cheryl, Steve Brody as his incompetent accountant and “EastEnders” actor Shaun Williamson as himself.

Premieres On HBO Sunday February 19th!

February’s episodes:

Episode #1

Debut: SUNDAY, FEB. 19 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)

Other HBO playdates: Feb. 19 (12:30 a.m.), 20 (11:00 p.m.) and 23 (9:30 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Feb. 20 (9:30 p.m.), 21 (1:25 a.m.), 22 (12:10 a.m.) and 24 (8:30 p.m.)

For more than two decades, Warwick Davis was Britain’s “go-to dwarf.” Now, with his career on the slide, a massive tax bill caused by his useless accountant and a wife who’s divorcing him, he decides to open his doors to a reality TV film crew. After interviewing a new assistant, he drops by unannounced to see old pals Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, but Liam Neeson already has an appointment to pitch himself as a serious actor who is serious about breaking into comedy.

Written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Episode #2

Debut: SUNDAY, FEB. 26 (10:30-11:00 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: Feb. 26 (12:30 a.m.) and 27 (11:00 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Feb. 27 (9:30 p.m.), 28 (1:25 a.m.) and 29 (11:30 p.m.)

While selling autographs at a sci-fi convention, Davis agrees to be the special guest at a “Star Wars”-themed wedding. His fortunes appear to rise when Johnny Depp hires him to help research a new movie role, but Depp ends up having a bone to pick with Ricky Gervais.

Written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are the creators of the Golden Globe-winning BBC comedy series “The Office” and the HBO series “Extras” and “The Ricky Gervais Show.” In addition to his feature film credits, Warwick Davis guest-starred on the series “Extras.”

LIFE’S TOO SHORT was created by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant & Warwick Davis; executive producers, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant; producer, Charlie Hanson.
