Emerging pop singer KAIT WESTON has unveiled a new cover of Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally” featuring YouTube sensation Brandon Skeie. Kait is fresh off the heels of her recently released single “Til Death Do Us Part” – the official song and music video of the new Romeo & Juliet film.

Originally from a small town in New York called Buchanan, Kait Weston made the move to Los Angeles two years ago to dedicate her life to music. Her journey began by creating a YouTube channel, where she posted cover versions of her favorite pop radio hits, which in turn caught the attention of popular YouTube sensation Tyler Ward. She went on to successfully win his USA Live Lounge Contest, which allowed her to be featured on two collaborations with Ward and introduced her to his millions of fans. Not long after, Kait received a call from renowned TV personality Ellen Degeneres, requesting that she perform her single “Firework” on The Ellen Show.

More about Porcelain Black

Emerging from a long studio session, Porcelain Black dodges the sun by shifting between shadows. The radiant and dour seem to follow the singer wherever she goes, and she loves it. “Everything that I do is a mix of light and dark,” she says. “The contrast represents my music, my hair, my personality.”

Fusing hard-hitting rock roots with the sticky, pulsating beats of 2101 label head and producer RedOne (Usher, U2, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Lady Gaga), Black has created a sound she likens to the would-be offspring of Marilyn Manson and Britney Spears. “It’s industrial, dark, danceable pop,” she says. “Bad ass and positive.”

While visiting RedOne’s studio in November 2009 Black’s vibe and epic vocals made an instant impact. “I wanted to sign her on the spot,” RedOne recalls. “She reminded me of Joan Jett. She’s got it all: the attitude, the talent, the look. She can scream and do things with her voice that nobody can do. She is uncompromising in pursuing her own creative vision. She’s taking everything that’s old and making it futuristic and bringing rock and roll back in her own way.”

Now, signed to 2101 Records via a joint venture with Universal Republic Records, Black is gearing up to release her second single, “Naughty Naughty,” which will be available on iTunes December 13th. The song follows her successful first single “This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like” Feat. Lil Wayne. Both tracks fuse roaring guitars with thunderous dance-pop, a vibe maintained throughout most of her daring, not-yet-titled debut. “Rock and roll is about attitude,” says the heavily tattooed singer, who was once asked by Courtney Love to sing backup when the alt rocker found her on MySpace under Porcelain and the Tramps. “We’re the kids that belong to the night, but just because you’re a bad ass doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Rock and roll is about embracing people.”

Recorded in Madrid, Sweden, N.Y. and L.A., Black’s album engages sinners on the striking “Living In Sin.” “People who point fingers and judge are hypocrites,” she explains. “So you just have to blow a kiss and wink with your middle finger.” On “How Do You Love Someone” she unmasks a layer of vulnerability when addressing her adolescence. “Momma never taught me how to love, Daddy never taught me how to feel,” she sings. But, she contests, “My dad was really loving. This is about my stepdad.”

Following her parent’s separation when she was 6, Black’s mother remarried into a cookie cutter lifestyle in Rochester, Mich. “My mom really wanted me to fit into that,” she recalls. “It made me feel corrupt.” Growing up on the gritty streets of Detroit’s 8 Mile, “Makes you have tough skin,” she adds. “I’m proud of that.”

Coming from humble beginnings – “we were really poor” – Black recalls hopping from the Magic Stick to catch rock shows to City Club for goth acts while donning Chuck Taylor’s, “with duck tape around the torn-to-bits toe because they were the only shoes that I had.”

Determined to broaden her horizons, Black found inspiration in the success of fellow Michigan natives Madonna and Bob Segar. But, declares the singer, who has Detroit’s moniker ‘ROCK CITY’ inked across her knuckles, “I’m continuing the Iggy & The Stooges and Motor City 5 Detroit rock tradition.”

At 15, Black discovered her father had cancer and was kicked out of two high schools in three months. “I never fit in,” she says. “My dad was dying of cancer and people were treating me like shit. I was a loner.” At age 16 her father died, but not before leaving a lasting musical mark on his daughter. “My first concert was ACDC with my dad,” she remembers. “We’d listen to Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix.”

A hairstylist who occasionally worked for Vogue, Black’s father took his daughter backstage at fashion shows and along to photo shoots. “He owned his own salon and while his clients’ hair would set he’d turn on a Marshal amp and put on his Kurt Cobain wig and jam out to Nirvana on his guitar. It was rad.”

Also inspired by dancing, Black took jazz, tap, hip-hop, and ballet. “I was training to go on Broadway or come out to L.A. and be a backup dancer,” says the singer, who used to buy vintage clothes and re-sell them to make ends meet. “But I was wasting my time. I knew I wanted to do music.”

Invited by pal Lil Wayne to join the “I Am Music II” tour alongside Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker and Rick Ross, Black rocks in killer platform heels and continues to revel in road tripping with artists she loves.

A fierce female with one hell of a wail, Black has no apologies. “Embrace the fact that you’re different,” she avows. “I want people to feel empowered. When somebody pisses me off, that’s when I’m really inspired. Rock and roll is about attitude, what you say and how you say it.”

2010 MTV Music Video Award Winners Announced!

2010 MTV Music Video Award Winners Announced!

Lady Gaga, outdoing even herself with her adventurous couture, dominated the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, adding eight to her collection of Moonmen with awards including “Video Of The Year,” “Best Dance Video,” “Best Pop Video” and “Best Female Video.”  Eminem, who opened this year’s Awards with a triumphant performance, walked away with two statues for “Best Male Video” and “Best Hip Hop Video.”  VMA newcomers 30 Seconds To Mars and Florence + The Machine took home their first wins for “Best Rock Video” and “Best Art Direction,” respectively.  Justin Bieber was voted “Best New Artist.”

A year after Taylor Swift’s first VMA win was interrupted by Kanye West, the two returned to musically play out last year’s drama, once again on the VMA stage. For an exclusive live performance, Taylor sang “Innocence,” an emotional song she wrote about how she felt after last year’s incident.  Later in the evening and this year as an official performer, Kanye debuted “Runaway” (featuring Pusha T from Clipse), a personal statement on the turbulence of the last year.

MTV aired the 2010 Video Music Awards live on Sunday, September 12 from Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, having transformed the venue into a 1950’s sculptural nod to modernism.  The VMA’s kicked off with an epic performance by Eminem backed by an orchestra to present a medley of his comeback anthem “Not Afraid” into a fiery version of “Love The Way You Lie” with surprise guest Rihanna.  Host Chelsea Handler brought her edgy comedic flair to the Awards, making a dramatic entrance that riffed on Lady Gaga’s extravagant fashion sense, flying onto the stage wearing a suburban house on her head, complete with a single car garage, and ending her monologue by releasing a dove from her dress.  Backstage before taking the stage, Chelsea was shown receiving “encouragement” from well wishers Li’l John, Flo Rida and a score-settling Lindsay Lohan.

Kim Kardashian introduced Justin Bieber, who made his VMA debut performance with an outdoor set of “Baby” into “Somebody to Love” to throngs of adoring fans – including Kim herself who, waving a restraining order, professed she’d nonetheless wait for the young heartthrob in his dressing room.

In another show highlight, the one-and-only Cher presented Lady Gaga with her “Video of the Year” Award, donning the same outfit (yes, she still fit into it) that she barely wore more than 20 years ago in her own memorable video “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

With an intro by Ke$sha and Trey Songz, Usher’s electric entrance and pounding energy brought down the house with a medley of “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” into “OMG!,” showing off his dance moves against an other-worldly combination of visual effects.

The physicality of Usher’s set contrasted with VMA newcomer Florence + The Machine’s ethereal, breakout performance of “Dog Days Are Over,” featuring a large-scale dance number with scores of dancers and percussionists to create a flowing dream-like sequence.

Representing the rock side of the house, Linkin Park extended the VMA stage to include the first-ever performance at the landmark Griffith Observatory, where they performed their powerful single “The Catalyst” against the stunning backdrop of a spectacular Los Angeles sunset.

Hip-hop artist Drake was joined on onstage by Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz for a performance of his hit single “Fancy,” set against a supper club backdrop. Shortly following Drake’s performance, Chelsea stumbled upon the cast of “Jersey Shore” in, what else, a hot tub.  Teasing the cast about how dirty the water is, she finally agreed to jump in fully clothed, only to emerge wet and pregnant.
Additional performances included a medley by “dream team” Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Paramore, marking the first time ever that B.o.B. and Hayley Williams of Paramore sang their hit single “Airplanes” together.

Joining this year’s VMA house artist deadmau5 to perform their current hit singles was Travie McCoy, Jason Derulo and Robyn.  The night was filled with a long list of musical artists and stars including: Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, MTV Tr3s Artist of the Year Romeo from Aventura, Sofia Vergara, Jared Leto, Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, cast members from “Glee” and “True Blood,” Ne-Yo, Ellen DeGeneres, the cast of the upcoming film “Jackass 3-D,” Penn Badgley, Selena Gomez, Emma Stone and Ashley Greene.

“To be performing and nominated at this years VMA’s is completely amazing and especially for the song ‘Dog Days.’ I recorded that song in a cupboard with no instruments and the sound of the drums was me banging my hands on the wall, clacking pens on Mpc’s and generally causing a cacophony with anything I could lay my hands on.,” said Florence + The Machine. “For this song to be recognized at such an iconic event is a total dream. For me ‘Dog Days’ symbolizes apocalyptic euphoria, Chaotic freedom and running really really fast with your eyes closed. I hope to somehow encapsulate those things in my performance at this years VMA’s. I would also hugely like to thank everyone at the VMA’s for giving me this opportunity.”

Katy Perry Unveils Striking Will Cotton Painted Album Art

Katy Perry Unveils Striking Will Cotton Painted Album Art

Katy Perry

On Wednesday, July 21st, renowned contemporary artist Will Cotton unveiled his recently completed portrait of chart-topping recording artist, Katy Perry.  Katy was present for the unveiling in the artist’s Lower East Side, Manhattan studio.  The painting will also be featured as the cover of Katy’s new album, Teenage Dream, scheduled for US release on August 24th.

The recording artist first contacted the painter five months ago to share her enthusiasm for his work.  It was kismet or destiny as Cotton, a confirmed Katy fan, had long considered making her the subject of one of his confectionary landscape paintings. The resulting portrait was chosen by Katy to grace the cover of her newest release and it is recreated in live action as one of the scenes in her current video for “California Gurls”, which has been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the last six weeks.  Cotton’s work serves as the inspiration for the visuals in the hit music clip– with his trademark cotton candy clouds, candy stick forests, and gingerbread cabins prominent features of the fantasy scenery.

Teenage Dream is Katy’s much awaited follow-up to her 2008 multi-platinum release “One Of The Boys” which featured the hit singles “Hot N Cold”“Waking Up In Vegas” and “I Kissed A Girl”. After her experience collaborating with the artist on her portrait, the singer-songwriter was enthusiastic to use more of his imagery as a visual component of her newest project. California Gurls video director Matthew Cullen and Motion Theory embraced the idea, enlisting Cotton as Artistic Director on the project, to recreate the artist’s images for the popular clip.  Cotton recreated some of the work personally, including creating the board game played by Snoop Dogg in the video, and worked with set designer Teri Whittaker to create scenery based on his artwork. The video is so popular it has received 18 million views in four weeks on YouTube.

While he does not consider himself a portrait artist, Cotton has depicted a few notable figures in his paintings, such as Tom Ford and Marie-Chantal of Greece.  The Katy portrait and the resulting video has focused considerable public attention on an artist long recognized by art world cognoscenti and featured in important private and public collections across the globe.  Said Cotton, “My collaboration with Katy started out as a mutual admiration society.  I’m delighted that my paintings are the inspiration for this video. My work is about creating a utopia where all desire is fulfilled all the time, but where pleasure and delight can turn dark and dystopic. Katy embodies the archetypes that I look for in a subject. It was thrilling to work with her and to see her inhabit my landscapes.”

“The day I found Will Cotton, I knew I wanted to live in his cinematic cotton candy world. A fantastically art-directed music video and one piece of timeless album artwork later, I can proudly say I am more than a fan. Will has been a sweetheart every step of the way and always open to collaborative ideas. I’m so happy to have discovered his candy-land, and so excited about our creative future together” states Katy.
