Review: Ryan Reynolds Shines As ‘Green Lantern’ (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Review: Ryan Reynolds Shines As ‘Green Lantern’ (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

As we all know, the superhero film has become a Hollywood staple over the past several years and as a fan, you never really know what you are in for when you sit down to take the latest one in. One of the latest feature-film adaptations of a DC Comics property is ‘Green Lantern’. Growing up, I stuck mostly to the more mainstream characters in the DC Universe, such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Wonder Twins and the adventures of the Justice League. That isn’t taking anything away from the Green Lantern, I was just more into the more notable characters. What I discovered as the film neared it’s theatrical release is that many of my peers were huge fans of the Green Lantern. It was their excitement that captivated me and got me equally excited for the project. However, I did try to steer clear of any trailers or promotion that might spoiler the fun.

'Green Lantern'

For the uninitiated, director Martin Campbell’s ‘Green Lantern’ centers an unsuspecting and impulsive test pilot named Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) who lives on the edge and finds himself struggling to find his true calling. An encounter with a dying alien quickly up-ends his already tumultuous life. Jordan quickly finds himself as the newest recruit for and elite force of peacekeepers known as the Green Lantern Corps. There is little time for Hal Jordan to adjust to his new life as he and this unique group of galaxy defenders find themselves facing their greatest threat, a new and seemingly unstoppable force known as Parallax. As this new evil threatens to destroy Earth, and the universe for that matter, Hal Jordan discovers that our fate lies in his hands.

Not knowing what I was in for, I sat down to take in the flick with no real expectations clouding my mind. What I was surprised with was the quick pace and the rich back story of the characters. As I mentioned before, I had discovered that many people I knew were VERY into the “Green Lantern” and just getting a glimpse of this very layered universe for the first time was pretty exciting. As for our leading man, Ryan Reynolds, we all know that he is no stranger to the superhero genre with outings in as Hannibal King in “Blade: Trinty” and Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” There is little argument that he is almost custom built for roles like these with his good looks, chiseled physique and perfectly timed, on-screen wit. His previous roles were the build-up to a great role as a title character. It is his great personality that truly carries the film and provides an undeniable likability that really makes the Hal Jordan character jump from script to screen. You are in his corner from the get-go and you want to have this guy save the world!

His supporting cast is far from shabby, featuring the likes of the stunning Blake Lively (Gossip Girl), Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins. Whether you are a fan of comic book movies or not, you can’t deny that this is one hell of a supporting cast! The film is certainly not as dark as Christopher Nolan’s recent ‘Batman’ franchise which many count as the gold standard for a superhero movie these days. Actually, the film serves as almost a polar opposite as it is a world filled with color and outlandish creatures — which is something that I dig in movies! The only complaint I might have with the film is that we don’t get to see as much of the ‘Green Latern’ mythos as I would have liked. After I saw the film, I did a little research and even picked up some back issues of the comic to learn more about the character. The film definitely got my hungry for more of this particular comic universe. That issue aside, what ‘Green Lantern’ provides is a look into a very diverse universe, fast paced action with a sense of humor and an entertaining storyline that both adults and kids can both enjoy.

SCORE: 3.75 OUT OF 5

Special Features on the Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack with Digital copy include:
