Guillermo del Toro Expands ‘Trollhunters’ Universe With ‘Tales of Arcadia’ Trilogy Series

Guillermo del Toro Expands ‘Trollhunters’ Universe With ‘Tales of Arcadia’ Trilogy Series

Guillermo del Toro is brining ‘Tales of Arcadia’ to Netflix.

Guillermo del Toro has announced that the world of Trollhunters will expand to become a trilogy of series called Tales of Arcadia.

On the surface, Arcadia appears to be a slice of timeless Americana, but it is no ordinary town.  It lies at the center of magical and mystical lines that will make it a nexus for many battles among otherworldly creatures including trolls, aliens and wizards.  DreamWorks Trollhunters, the first installment in the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, will be followed by two additional series 3 Below in 2018 and a final chapter Wizards set to debut in 2019.

Following Trollhunters, DreamWorks 3 Below will focus on two royal teenage aliens and their bodyguard who flee a surprise takeover of their home planet by an evil dictator and crash land in Arcadia. Now on the run from intergalactic bounty hunters, they struggle to blend in and adapt to the bizarre world of high school all the while attempting to repair their ship so they can return and defend their home planet.

DreamWorks Wizards brings together the three disparate worlds of trolls, aliens and wizards who have found themselves drawn to Arcadia. The final chapter of the Tales of Arcadia culminates in an apocalyptic battle for the control of magic that will ultimately determine the fate of these supernatural worlds that have now converged.

Premiering in 2016 to critical acclaim, Trollhunters introduced audiences to the seemingly quiet town of Arcadia and an ordinary kid who embarks on an extraordinary adventure in a hidden world right beneath his feet featuring the voices of Anton Yelchin, Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman, Steven Yeun, Anjelica Huston and more. The first season lead the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys with six wins, more than any other program, including writing for an animated program (Marc Guggenheim), directing (Rodrigo Blaas, del Toro), casting (Ania O’Hare, Mary Hildalgo) and a voice acting win for Grammer.

DreamWorks Trollhunters is created and executive produced by del Toro with Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow), Rodrigo Blaas (Alma) and Chad Hammes (Dragons: Race to the Edge) and Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians) serving as executive producers.  Dan Hageman (The Lego Movie, Ninjago) and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie, Ninjago) serve as co-executive producers.

Monsters Exist: A Review of ‘Kong: Skull Island’ On Blu-ray!

Monsters Exist: A Review of ‘Kong: Skull Island’ On Blu-ray!

Giant monster movies, or Kaiju films, are my bag! You put an enormous creature on the big screen and I’m probably going to eat it up. Hell, I’m still waiting for a proper sequel to Cloverfield. So you know that as soon as I heard there was a King Kong reboot heading our way it took a lot for my head not to explode. Sadly, when Kong: Skull Island hit theaters I was unable to make it out. Now, with Kong coming to bluray/digital I had a chance to sit down and take in the giant primate’s greatness! Join me as I take on Warner Bros newest release, Kong: Skull Island!

Kong opens in 1944, smack dab in the middle of World War 2. Two fighter pilots, on opposite sides of the conflict, crash land on a mysterious island. The two continue their fight on foot until their skirmish is broken up at the site of the title’s gigantic creature. Flash forward 30 years and we open on scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) attempting to convince government officials of the existence of an unexplored island in the South Pacific. Under the guise of scientific geological exploration, Randa leads a military and research team (headed by Tom Hiddleston, Samuel Jackson, and Brie Larson) on a dangerous excursion through hidden land. As you can guess things go “not so according” to plan and the group must fight to escape the many inhabitants of “Skull Island”.

Let me start out by stating that this is not your run of the mill King Kong film. While there are brief moments of the “beauty and the beast” storyline seen in the origin story Kong films this is a mile a minute adrenaline rush. Honestly, this film closely resembles a Vietnam War film, which made the Southeast Asian country the perfect shooting location. This influence could even be seen in the film’s promotional art; one particular poster is a purposeful copy of classic war film, Apocalypse Now. Director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts places our characters in the trenches of an all-out battle between goliaths. That’s mainly where this film differs from the others before it. For example, while there are moments of terror in the Peter Jackson film, nothing compares to the “man vs beast” match ups we have in this latest incarnation.

This leads me to the visuals. This is, hands down, one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen. Each scene delivers a specific color pallet that draws the audience in. Not to spoil anything, but there is a particular scene that takes the color green and creates one of the craziest action sequences of all time. All of the color I wanted to see in Suicide Squad, can be seen in Kong! Along with the visuals, the music creates the perfect set piece for war. The mixture of Henry Jackman’s score and 60’s/70’s rock takes the audience through a range of emotions including hope and dread.

Now let’s talk the disc itself, and what everyone who has already seen the film is thinking about, EXTRAS! I’m here to tell you that this release does not disappoint. There are multiple making of/behind the scenes featurettes on the creation of Kong himself and shooting in Vietnam. There are also quick looks at Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson in their perspective roles. The feature I wanted to talk about most is the Monarch Files 2.0. This is a feature that continues over from the 2014 Godzilla bluray. Monarch is, of course, the agency put in place to deal with these “massive unidentified terrestrial organisms”. There are multiple parts to these files and each part deals with a specific aspect of the island and its inhabitants. It truly reminds me of the ghost stories on the Thir13en Ghosts DVD (2001). If you want more on the lore of these films, here’s where you’re going to get it. Along with these features we have very informative Director’s Commentary and various Deleted Scenes.

This is, in no doubt, my favorite Kong film since the original 1933 classic. While the other films are enjoyable in their own way, this is the only movie to truly capture the size and power of colossal primate. As a matter of fact, Kong is much more than a giant ape, he’s a god. That’s what’s brought to the screen here. If you want a fun, giant monster movie then look no further than Kong: Skull Island.

Blu-ray Review: Arrow Video Unleashes ‘Return of the Killer Tomatoes’

Blu-ray Review: Arrow Video Unleashes ‘Return of the Killer Tomatoes’

After returning from an extended vacation, Steve Johnson takes a look at Arrow Video’s release of “Return of the Killer Tomatoes.” This cult classic stars Anthony Starke, a young George Clooney and the always fabulous John Astin.

How about a quick synopsis before we dive headlong into beautiful mullets and the battle against the red menace.

THE VEGETABLES OF DOOM! The killer tomatoes are back! But this time around, they will have to contend with late ’80s George Clooney and his wicked mullet! Is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Nope, it’s “Return of the Killer Tomatoes!” Ten years on from the Great Tomato War, mankind lives in fear of another uprising by the waxy red menace. Meanwhile, Professor Gangreen – played with gusto by the great John Astin from “The Addams Family” – sets out to pursue his evil ends by creating a burgeoning army of tomato militia men (who, somewhat conveniently, look just like regular men). Following the 1978 cult classic “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes,” “Return of the Killer Tomatoes” is armed with a healthy sense of ridiculousness and expands upon a franchise comprised of four films, two TV series and a video game. So what are you waiting for? Make “Return of the Killer Tomatoes” one of your five-a-day now!

REVIEW: Well guys, I returned from an extended vacation and immediately waded back into the pool that is Arrow Video. Speaking of returning, this time around I am taking a look at Arrow Video’s release of “Return of the Killer Tomatoes.” The Killer Tomato series is one I’m not sure I had much experience with … let me explain. Have you ever had a movie you swear you saw but, upon watching it, have no recollection? That sums up my experience with this film. Maybe I told my friends I saw it to keep my cult/horror cred unquestioned. Maybe I’m losing my mind. I don’t know … anyway, back to the movie.

I love this movie. It’s campy. It’s fun. What else do I need to say to convince you? OK then, I’ll continue. Gomez Addams himself, John Astin, is awesome as the diabolical Professor Gangreen. The good professor figures out how to convert tomatoes into guys straight out of a Rambo movie. How can that not get your attention? Well, he also creates the perfect woman, Tara, played by the extremely sexy Karen Waldron. Once Tara meets our two heroes Chad and Matt (Anthony Starke and George Clooney) all hell breaks loose. Did I mention George Clooney’s mullet? Yeah … it’s awesome and so is his performance. That guy was meant for the stardom he achieved.

OK, I’m going to get a bit serious for a second. In some aspects, this film was well ahead of its time. Yes, you read that correctly. The inclusion of self-referential humor and a ridiculous product placement gag was a blast. Yes children of the ‘90s, “Wayne’s World” was not the first film to include blatant product placement. Writer-director John De Bello cleverly wrapped a smart film in a devilishly fun exterior. I encourage everyone reading this to check it out. Grab a beer, some popcorn and toss this one in your Blu-ray player. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

This set includes both High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations of the film. While the transfer isn’t one of Arrow’s best, the Blu-ray looks fantastic and is more than adequate considering the source material. The audio on the disc is presented in its original stereo format, but you do get uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray. Is the sound going to blow you away? No, but what the hell do you expect from a Killer Tomatoes film?

Arrow is one of the best at including amazing special features on their releases and this one is no different. The guys over at Arrow kicked things off in the special features department by including a reversible sleeve featuring the original artwork and newly commissioned artwork by Matthew Griffin. I love the artwork and could see myself adding a print to my collection. An illustrated collector’s booklet featuring the thoughts of film critic James Oliver is also packaged inside and worth a look.

The two highlights of the special features are a new audio commentary with writer-director John de Bello and a new interview with star Anthony Starke. Both of these are highly informative and convey how much fun everyone was having during the filming of the movie. Completing the special features are the original theatrical trailer and optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Make no bones about it, Arrow’s release of “Return of the Killer Tomatoes” is the definitive release of the film. If you are a fan of this series you need to pick this up. Hell, if you like watching campy movies and have never seen this, blind buy it. You will not regret it! — Steve Johnson, Staff Writer
