Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton Join The Cast of ‘The Thing’

The first bit of casting for the prequel to Jon Carpenter’s classic, The Thing, has hit the web via THR’s Heat Vision.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) and Joel Edgerton (The Secret Life of Us, Kinky Boots) will star in “The Thing.” The film is inspired by the events at the beginning of the 1982 version where remaining members of the Norweigan team are trying desperately to kill a runaway dog that has been infected with the organism.

Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

The film is set for a March 15, 2010 start date in Toronto, Canada. Matthijs Van Heijningen is directing the film, which was written by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer.

Synopsis: Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist forgarage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass–and now is back in town–to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her lovelife and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past–from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

What is ‘Scott Pilgrim’ All About?
Scott Pilgrim is a critically acclaimed, award-winning series of graphic novels by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley, intended to eventually consist of six digest-sized black-and-white graphic novels.

The first volume was released in 2004 and, as of 2009, five have been released, all published by Portland, Oregon independent comic book publisher Oni Press.

The series is about 24-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker, hero, wannabe-rockstar, who is living in Toronto and playing bass in the band “Sex Bob-Omb.” He falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona V. Flowers, but must defeat her seven “evil ex-boyfriends” in order to date her.

Scott Pilgrim is named after a song by the late great 90’s all-girl Canadian indie rock band, Plumtree.
