Produced by Tony Newton and Iron Maiden founder member and bass player Steve Harris, the album is based on this year’s set list and is a faithful record of the epic show, including six songs from The Book Of Souls, the band’s most recent studio album, along with many other classics and fan favorites.

Steve comments, “We spent a huge amount of time working on this as I wanted to get it as close to the Maiden live experience as I possibly could and to represent our fans from different parts of the world. This meant listening to literally hours upon hours of tapes from every show, to select material and construct a sound that would run consistently across the whole album and capture the excitement of a new country like El Salvador alongside such regular favorites as Donington or Wacken.”

Maiden manager Rod Smallwood adds, “The Book Of Souls World Tour was a huge undertaking, not least for Bruce who started the tour singing in public for the very first time since recovering from throat cancer. He also piloted Ed-Force One, upgraded last year from a Boeing 757 to a 747 so we could go further and faster to visit some fantastic cities and fans all round the world. This year continued that excitement bringing us our most successful North American and U.K. tours ever. It was a very special tour in a great many ways so we felt we wanted to document it for both ourselves and for our fans. Steve has done an incredible job putting together this set from cities around the world and we’ve made sure the deluxe CD will be available in a matching book format to The Book of Souls release.

“On top of all that the release will be celebrated by an event that is a Maiden first: a free live streaming premiere of the concert film, as a thank you to our loyal fans around the world. We hope that the global Maiden community will all enjoy coming together to watch this special event online. The mammoth tour opened in Florida last February playing fourteen sold-out shows in the U.S.A and Canada along with a further 58 concerts in 34 other countries around the globe.

First night reviews from Ft Lauderdale called it “…a full-throttle, devil-may-care performance that thrilled a sold-out BB&T Center” (Sun Sentinel) with Revolver magazine reporting how the band’s legendary mascot Eddie dominated the Maya-themed stage: “From a walking zombie towering over band members during the set, to being featured on a host of back-drops and huge blow-up figures – the quintessential symbol was omnipresent for the entire show” including Eddie having his heart literally ripped out of his chest and hurled into the crowd by singer Bruce Dickinson!

Steve Harris commented; “We are really looking forward to returning to North America for a full tour. We had always planned to go back there and to the UK as last year, due to the global nature of the tour and the period it took, we just didn’t have time to cover them properly and we do still like to get to fans in as many places as possible!

So this year we’re able to reach many more cities in America, including a return to places Maiden haven’t played for many, many years like Lincoln Nebraska, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City and Oakland California. We also welcome playing in Brooklyn for the first time.

We will, of course, be bringing the full production with us including all the Eddies and the Maya-themed stage sets. There’s been a great reaction from everyone to this tour’s theme, people really seem to love it. We’re still deciding on the final set-list and we’ll work that out once we get into rehearsals. Most of our North American fans haven’t seen the show yet so as we want to give them the same Book Of Souls live experience that we took around the world, it’s unlikely we’ll change much. And of course we know our fans appreciate us playing a lot of the older songs too, so we will continue to do that!”

Tickets start going on-sale Friday, January 27 check www.ironmaiden.com for market specific info. As usual, there will be an exclusive pre-sale for IRON MAIDEN Fan Club members, details of which can also be found on www.ironmaiden.com along with information on how Fan Club members can participate in the draw to be “First To The Barrier”.

IRON MAIDEN are delighted to welcome Ghost http://ghost-official.com/ as their Special Guests for the North American leg of The Book Of Souls World Tour.

*There will also be some further bands added to the show at San Bernardino.

After great feedback to last year’s North American trial of the concept, Maiden fans will again be able to enjoy a TROOPER VIP Upgrade package that will allow them early access to the venue, a pile of TROOPER goodies and MAIDEN swag, TROOPER beers, food and a designated area to meet with other fans, plus the opportunity to win some great prizes. The upgrade packages are available at US$199 from www.troopervip.com. The concert ticket must be purchased separately.

For the 2017 shows Maiden will once again, in conjunction with the Promoters, be implementing a partial paperless ticketing system in as many venues as possible, which they have been successfully doing since 2010 and has worked well in lessening the ticketing scalping and drain of the prime tickets into the Secondary Ticketing sites.

The Book Of Souls is Maiden’s first ever double studio album and their most successful chart-wise to date, debuting at the No. 1 spot in over 40 countries around the world and No. 4 in the U.S.A.

Iron Maiden Launches ‘Legacy of the Beast’ Mobile RPG Game

Iron Maiden Launches ‘Legacy of the Beast’ Mobile RPG Game

iron-maiden-legacy-of-the-beast-2016

The wait is over! Metal and RPG gaming fans can now download Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, the action-packed, free-to-play mobile game where players take on the role of the band’s iconic mascot, Eddie. Available from today for iOS and Android devices, the teams at Nodding Frog, 50cc Games and Roadhouse Interactive have created a new and unique gaming experience in close collaboration with the band and its management team, Phantom Music Management.

The game is set in a visually stunning universe, comprised of an ever-expanding series of worlds derived from Iron Maiden’s music and art. Fans of the band and RPG gamers alike will battle and strategize as Eddie and his allies. Inspired by themes from the songs, and set against a powerful and atmospheric Maiden soundtrack, players will journey on epic quests to reclaim the shards of Eddie’s shattered soul as he faces his most challenging adversaries.

James Hursthouse, CEO of Roadhouse Interactive comments, “As a lifelong Maiden fan, I am exceptionally proud of Legacy of the Beast and excited to launch it globally. It has been a privilege to work so closely with Maiden and their management. With this game I believe that we have created an outstanding, authentic RPG experience to appeal to all mobile gamers, including those discovering the band for the first time.”

Steve Harris, Bassist and founder member of Iron Maiden comments, “We’ve always wanted to make a quality Maiden mobile game as we think the combination of Eddie and the music is so well suited – and it’s a great way to get our music out to a new audience! When the opportunity arose to make a mobile game which our fans, along with hopefully a lot of the gaming community, can play pretty well anywhere in the world, and download for free at that, we jumped at it. The whole band visited Roadhouse while touring through Vancouver back in April and we were so impressed by the creativity, enthusiasm and passion of the team there. Visually, the worlds and character designs do us proud and the music just ties it all together.”

Llexi Leon, Interactive Director of Phantom Music Management adds, “Eddie is constantly evolving; he’s a globally recognizable character that resonates with fans of all ages, and has taken on a life of his own beyond the album covers where he first appeared. This game gives players a chance to step into Eddie’s world and experience an odyssey across space and time. In this incredible RPG adventure, we’re able to explore the origins of Eddie’s power and test the limit of his abilities, bringing new mechanics to the mobile RPG genre, and creating a truly unique gaming experience for everyone to enjoy.”

In Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beastplayers control Eddie’s destiny across a spectacularly diverse array of worlds by traveling through time in captivating 3D environments. Eddie appears in many forms, each a part of Iron Maiden’s rich history, and each with a set of special powers and abilities.

Players will amass an army of powerful allies to battle alongside Eddie and face the onslaught of foes hell-bent on destroying him. Legions of unrelenting enemies are commanded by the Agents of Control, including The Beast, The Wicker Man, Horus and The Axis General, all drawn from the expansive catalog of Maiden’s albums and artwork.

The game offers over 40 different Talisman sets to choose from, which all add to characters’ vital abilities. With each battle, players will evolve their armies, take on ever-increasing challenges to reclaim the facets of Eddie’s soul, and ultimately defeat the Agents of Control.

Gameplay is enhanced by a blistering soundtrack that features songs spanning the band’s entire career. Players will hear rare, previously unheard live recordings of Iron Maiden classics adapted for the game under the close scrutiny of bassist and founding member Steve Harris.

The game is now available for free on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. For more information about Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, please visit www.ironmaidenlegacy.com.

Album Review: Iron Maiden Continue Legacy of Heavy Metal Excellence With ‘The Book of Souls’

Album Review: Iron Maiden Continue Legacy of Heavy Metal Excellence With ‘The Book of Souls’

UK_maiden-2015

Iron Maiden has spent a lifetime defying the odds. Despite having been together for four decades as a band they continue to challenge themselves as artists and raise the stakes for themselves as well as countless bands following in their footsteps. They are a testament to creative longevity and determination. Far removed from their 1980s heyday, 2010’s “The Final Frontier” was the band’s most successful chart-wise album to date, reaching No. 1 in 28 countries and garnering their highest chart debut in the U.S., reaching No. 4 in the Billboard 200. Impressive numbers for any band but especially for one who has seen the music industry change exponentially through the years yet continue to impact music fans around the globe. Many fans believed the previous album was the last they would hear from Iron Maiden, a rumor further enforced when lead singer Bruce Dickinson was diagnosed with a tumor on his tongue late last year. However, Dickinson soldiered on, never missing a beat and received a clean bill of health from his doctors. Back at 100%, the band is once again at full-strength and has its sights set on world domination.

Iron Maiden - 'The Book of Souls'

Iron Maiden – ‘The Book of Souls’

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Iron Maiden will release their 16th studio album, “The Book of Souls,” on September 4, 2015. The highly anticipated double album features 11 songs spanning 92 minutes of the kind of sheer rock energy only Iron Maiden can deliver. Songwriting and storytelling has always been at the core of Iron Maiden’s success (not taking anything away from their epic live shows, of course!). “The Book of Souls” carries on this proud tradition. Dickinson and bassist Steve Harris lent their immense talents to creating the majority of this record, along with the band’s three guitarists: Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers contributing as well. The sonic rollercoaster kicks off with ethereal sounds of “If Eternity Should Fall.” It isn’t long before Dickinson’s classic vocal sound weaves in and out of the chugging bass and drum rhythms, setting the stage for the epic journey ahead. The band released the high energy track “Speed of Light” as the lead single for the album. It was a wise choice as it harkens back to some of the band’s early work when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was capturing the hearts and minds of music fans everywhere. “The Great Unknown” changes up the pace with a dark and moody vibe. Dickinson weaves his tale with a whispery vocal, expertly building it with each passing moment until it spreads its wings and soars. As a solo songwriter, Steve Harris offers up “The Red and the Black,” which is an inspired tune with another contagious chant that will surely be a hit in the live setting. It also features an outrageous six-minute soloing session with Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers. “When the River Runs Deep” perfectly showcases the talents of each band member. Dickinson shines on this track as he chases the rhythm vocal, rising and falling throughout the tune. It is a satisfying and inspiring adventure. The first half of the album features the Mayan-themed title track, “The Book of Souls.” Dickinson shines once again with theatrical vocals over heavy grooves which harken back to some of the most important eras of this iconic band. Clearly, they can still tap into the source and make the magic happen.

Disc 2 of the album brings a different pace. However, “Tears Of A Clown” shows Iron Maiden is not a band content reliving the past but exploring different territories as artists. “Death or Glory,” “Shadows of the Valley” and “The Man of Sorrows” are solid tracks but one of the clear standouts on this portion of the album is “Tears of a Clown.” The track is a tribute to the life of the late Robin Williams that explores both the dark and the light of a complicated artist with introspective vocals paired with some of the record’s grittiest guitar riffs. If you are a fan of the comedic legend, it is hard not to be moved. The first four songs lay the groundwork for the Dickinson penned grand finale, “Empire of the Clouds,” which clocks in at just over 18 minutes, that once again brilliantly showcases different elements from the band’s groundbreaking catalog. It is a perfect storm of storytelling, soaring vocals and expert musicianship. As the song continues to build, it shows Iron Maiden has plenty of fuel left in the tank creatively.

“The Book of Souls” is a daring and powerful album that serves as another epic chapter in the history of the iconic band. It is an album that draws on the strengths of its collective parts. Even though it brings the familiar vibe of the band’s back catalog, it in no way feels dated and brings a bevy of new tunes custom-made to rock stadiums to their core. With 40 years under their belt, Iron Maiden shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. The band recently announced plans for a globe-spanning world tour in 2016. Planning has begun to bring the legendary band to six of the seven continents (Australia, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Europe) and roughly 35 countries.

RATING: 4.5 out of 5

“The Book Of Souls” will be released on September 4, 2015 through BMG in the United States and via Parlophone Records in the rest of world. Maiden fans can download the “Speed Of Light” song when pre-ordering The Book Of Souls on iTunes. It can also be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.

Iron Maiden To Embark On Massive 2016 World Tour In Support of ‘The Book Of Souls’

Iron Maiden To Embark On Massive 2016 World Tour In Support of ‘The Book Of Souls’

iron-maiden-flight666

Rock legends IRON MAIDEN, whose new studio album The Book of Souls, their first for 5 years, will be released worldwide next week on Sept 4, are taking touring to a new level using a Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet (aka Queen of the Skies) for their World Tour next year. Vocalist Bruce Dickinson is currently in training for his licence to fly the massive four engine jet, which is almost twice the size and over three times the weight of the Boeing 757 used on previous tours in 2008/9/11 (see attached comparison grid). The new Ed Force One will take the band, crew and over 12 tons of equipment more than 55,000 miles (88,500km) around the planet with concerts in six of the seven continents (Australasia, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Europe) with The Book of Souls World Tour 2016 expected to visit around 35 countries.

Iron Maiden - 'The Book of Souls'

Iron Maiden – ‘The Book of Souls’

Details of the precise schedule are currently being finalized and we will commence announcements of specific dates for the different territories in a few weeks’ time.  However we can reveal that The Book Of Souls World Tour will open in the U.S.Ain late February with Ed Force One flying in for three shows before, in early March, heading into Central America visitingMEXICO, followed by a much anticipated first ever concert in EL SALVADOR and a return to COSTA RICA. Ed Force One then proceeds into South America for concerts in ARGENTINA, CHILE and a number of shows in BRAZIL before flying back to the USA at the end of March for ten more cities covering the U.S.A and, of course, CANADA in the first two weeks of April.

A long awaited return to JAPAN follows later in April, and then the band are delighted to be playing their first ever shows inCHINA before heading to NEW ZEALAND and AUSTRALIA for a comprehensive tour during the first half of May. Shows inSOUTH AFRICA, Maiden’s first visit there with Bruce, will be the last port of call before Ed Force One heads to EUROPE for a very extensive tour starting in late May and finishing in early August. This will the first time Ed Force One has ever been used on any European Tour dates (other than Bruce’s Fan Club trips to shows) and will provide transport there for at least for the first few weeks.

Bruce Dickinson comments:

“When the opportunity arose from my friends at Air Atlanta Icelandic (LINK www.atlanta.is) to lease a 747 for The Book of Souls World Tour, of course we jumped at the chance, who wouldn’t? The greatest benefit of travelling in a 747 is that because of its colossal size and freight capacity we can carry our stage production and all our stage equipment and desks in the cargo hold without having to make any of the immense structural modifications needed to do this on the previous 757, the extent of which fans will have noted on the Flight 666 DVD. Although in reality we cannot carry much more gear the savings in complexity, time and cost make using the 747 even more practical. All we will need to do is “paint” it and move a few seats around, with the added advantage that there is much more room for band and crew – our Krew can almost get a row of seats each to catch up on sleep on the flights! Furthermore, it is marginally faster o.85 MACH and the range of around 7000NM (13,000 km) is much greater which means we will not have to make the refuelling stops we needed to with the 757.

“However, even though we have worked out the logistics of taking a plane of that immense size out on tour, I still have to learn to fly it before we can go anywhere! So, I’m currently doing my training to qualify as a pilot and Captain on a Boeing 747.  I’m doing this at Cardiff Aviation, my aircraft maintenance facility in Wales, where we recently took possession of a rather splendid 747 simulator which I can’t wait to get practising on!

“We’re all really excited at the thought of bringing our brand new tour to fans who have never seen us play live before, and of course re-visiting all our old friends again too. You can rest assured we are all working hard to put together a spectacular show for our fans.”

The 747 is the world’s most recognisable airliner on account of its distinctive hump. With its impressive dimensions of 70.7m (232ft) length, 19.4m (63.6ft) height and a jaw-dropping wing span of 64.4m (211ft) this double-decker aircraft has a range of 13,450km (7,262nm). (See grid for full and comparative specs)

Final dates, venues and ticket on sale times, along with full details of what Maiden fans can expect from The Book Of Souls World Tour, will be announced by territory starting in a few weeks’ time. As usual, where feasible, IRON MAIDEN Fan Club members will have exclusive access to purchase tickets before they go on general sale. Also, wherever possible, the Fan Club will again be running the First To The Barrier draw for privileged, early access to the venue to secure the best standing positions by or close to the barrier.

The Book Of Souls is Maiden’s 16th, and first ever, double studio album and is released September 4 through BMG in the U.S.A (Parlophone Records rest of world).

Iron Maiden – ‘The Book of Souls’

Heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN have just premiered the video for “Speed Of Light” on their website www.ironmaiden.com. Written by guitarist Adrian Smith and vocalist Bruce Dickinson, “Speed of Light” is taken from their new double album The Book Of Souls due for global release on September 4, 2015 through BMG in the U.S.A. (Parlophone Records rest of world). The video will be available for streaming free on both www.ironmaiden.com and the band’s YouTube channel. Maiden fans can download the “Speed Of Light” song when pre-ordering The Book Of Souls on iTunes. It can also be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.

The video was produced and directed by Llexi Leon with animation and visual effects by The Brewery Production Company. A huge Iron Maiden fan, this is Llexi Leon’s first music video. Creator of the cult comic book series Eternal Descent – an IP that digitally animated a cast list of metal & hard rock luminaries, Leon has further expanded into the video gaming industry. He chose to collaborate with The Brewery who’s previous film credits include 2010’s punk-rock inspired Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll with Andy Serkis, 2012’s music festival themed Spike Island with Emilia Clarke & more recently were providing VFX for the Sky Atlantic biopic on Ian Fleming.

The video is a ‘homage’ to four decades of video gaming juxta-posed alongside Iron Maiden’s 40 years of incredible visual canon centering on their talisman, Eddie as he travels through space & time to complete his Herculean task.

The Book Of Souls is IRON MAIDEN’s 16th studio album and was recorded in Guillame Tell Studios in Paris with longstanding producer Kevin Shirley.

IRON MAIDEN: Metal Legends To Unleash ‘The Book of Souls’ On September 4th!

IRON MAIDEN: Metal Legends To Unleash ‘The Book of Souls’ On September 4th!

Iron Maiden - 'The Book of Souls'

Iron Maiden – ‘The Book of Souls’

IRON MAIDEN’s eagerly awaited new studio album The Book Of Souls will be released globally on September 4, 2015, through BMG in the U.S.A. (Parlophone Records rest of world). It was recorded in Paris with their longstanding producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley in late 2014, with the finishing touches added earlier this year.  However, the band decided to delay its release so that vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who was recently given the all-clear from a tumor, would have time to recuperate sufficiently to join in the preparations for the album’s launch.

The stunning cover art was created by Mark Wilkinson, who has worked with the band previously, and because this 11-track album has a total running time of 92 minutes, it is IRON MAIDEN’s first ever double studio album.  There’s a broader split on the songwriting compared to previous Maiden records, with bassist and founder member Steve Harris contributing to seven of the tracks; six of them with Maiden’s guitarists and one sole composition.  This is also the first time since 1984’s Powerslave that an IRON MAIDEN studio album also features two tracks written solely by Bruce Dickinson, one of which is the longest song Maiden has ever recorded! The Book Of Souls also features Dickinson/Smith collaborations.

Steve comments:?“We approached this album in a different way to how we’ve recorded previously.  A lot of the songs were actually written while we were there in the studio and we rehearsed and recorded them straight away while they were still fresh, and I think that immediacy really shows in the songs, they have almost a live feel to them, I think. I’m very proud of The Book Of Souls, we all are, and we can’t wait for our fans to hear it, and especially to take it out on the road next year!

Bruce continues: “We’re really excited about The Book Of Souls and had a fantastic time creating it. We started working on the album in late summer 2014 and recorded it at Guillame Tell Studios in Paris, where we’d done the Brave New World album back in 2000 so the studio holds special memories for all of us. We were delighted to discover the same magical vibe is still alive and very much kicking there! So we immediately felt at home and the ideas just started flowing. By the time we’d finished we all agreed that each track was such an integral part of the whole body of work that if it needed to be a double album, then double its going to be!

The full track listing is:?

The Book Of Souls is the band’s 16th studio album since their eponymous debut in 1980 charted at No. 4 in the UK, in a career achieving sales of over 90 million albums worldwide. Their previous album, 2010’s The Final Frontier, was Maiden’s most successful chart-wise to date, reaching Number One in 28 countries and was their highest chart debut in the U.S reaching No. 4 in the Billboard 200.

Due to Bruce’s illness the band had to delay touring plans but promise to be out on the road again early next year, giving time for Bruce to make a full physical recovery to be ready for the rigors of Maiden live performances.

IRON MAIDEN: Entire Catalog Now Mastered For iTunes

IRON MAIDEN: Entire Catalog Now Mastered For iTunes

iron-mainden-2015

Parlophone Records (BMG/INgrooves Music Group for the USA) is delighted to announce the release of nineteen IRON MAIDEN catalog albums which have been Mastered For iTunes (iTunes.com/IronMaiden), encoded from 24-bit / 96 khz high resolution masters and now re-mastered with iTunes in mind, delivering the music to listeners exactly the way the artist and recording engineer intended. These are brand new re-masters from their original analog sources, exclusively produced for iTunes.

All 15 studio albums, two Best Of compilations and two live albums were personally selected by Maiden’s founder member Steve Harris for this superior mastering technique:Iron MaidenKillersThe Number Of The BeastPiece Of MindPowerslaveSomewhere In TimeSeventh Son Of A Seventh SonNo Prayer For The DyingFear Of The DarkThe X FactorVirtual XIBrave New WorldDance Of DeathA Matter Of Life And DeathThe Final FrontierSomewhere Back In TimeFrom Fear To Eternity (2CD)Live after Death (2CD) and Rock In Rio ( 2CD).

Steve Harris comments,
“The Mastering For iTunes procedure allows the listener to experience the music as close as possible to the way the artist intended it to be heard.  So of course I was very keen for the Maiden albums to be mastered in this way. The records have been available digitally before, when this medium first became a platform for music distribution but that was mastered with CDs in mind. The iTunes process involves a different approach and it’s great to finally deliver the music to our fans in as close to a pure and accurate sound as we could possibly achieve. For example, as most people know, I was never really happy with the sound on the first Maiden album but listening to it now, the guitars are louder, the drums more substantial and the overall tone is so very much improved in my opinion. Tony Newton and Ade Emsley who worked closely with me on the project did a terrific job recapturing everything from the original masters and together we’ve re- mastered them all digitally and I’m really happy with the results.”

Tony Newton adds:
“The process started with locating all of the original album mix tapes (or whichever format they were mixed to). Then the choice of analogue to digital convertor was chosen for the most accurate capture to make it as close as possible to the sound of the mix as it was intended by the band.  When a lot of these tapes were last captured it was in the 1980’s, early days of digital and only 44.1khz/16bit files were possible. On top of this the new A/D convertors are far superior now, and of course it is possible to produce files of far higher resolution. The result of this is that the songs now sound more defined with added depth and warmth. I was very excited to be asked to be part of this project, I honestly feel that there is a massive improvement in the quality of these classic albums.”

Fans can download the Mastered For iTunes versions of the albums now from (iTunes.com/IronMaiden) and learn more about Mastered For iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/

KINGDOM OF I: Lauren Harris Discusses Her Exciting New Musical Path!

KINGDOM OF I: Lauren Harris Discusses Her Exciting New Musical Path!

lauren harris

From the moment, London, England born Lauren Harris took her very first steps backstage at the world famous Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Japan, she was destined to be an entertainer. Eldest daughter of Steve Harris, the world famous, award winning bassist and founding member of legendary Iron Maiden, Lauren has literally grown up with music and entertainment constantly around her, and embodied with a world-travelled knowledge hewn from legendary rock music ancestry, it was not long before Lauren followed her natural instincts.

Lauren Harris

Lauren Harris

At the tender age of 17, Lauren quietly started singing at an early age in London pubs and one night she grabbed the attention of legendary British producer, artist and writer Russ Ballard (Roger Daltrey, Hot Chocolate, America, Elkie Brookes, John Waite). Ballard asked her to sing a demo for new material he was writing and this led Lauren to work with Multi-Grammy award winning writer/producer Tom McWilliams (Paulina Rubio, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada), and within just a few months, Lauren was touring Europe, playing in front of 50,000 + people a night. After proving herself during an in intensive 12 months of touring, Lauren was presented her biggest and most daunting challenge yet – supporting Iron Maiden on their world tour. Taking on the challenge of being a female in a man’s world, she proved all the detractors and naysayers wrong, mesmerizing packed houses in the biggest stadiums around the world. During this tour, Lauren went down in history as the first ever woman ever to front a rock band at a major concert in India. In October of 2006, Lauren’s life came full circle as she walked out in front of 20,000 people at the Budokan Arena in Japan, the very same venue where she took her first ever steps. When the tour concluded, Lauren released her debut album entitled “Calm before the Storm”, which was mixed by the legendary Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden), and continued to tour the UK and Europe in support of the release. In a short few years Lauren had gone from performing in pubs to playing to over a million people in over 50 countries, but rather than being the end of a success story, this was just the beginning of a what is turning into a true fairy tale.

Never happy to rest on her laurels, Lauren began working with legendary Vocal coach David Grant (Diana Ross, Linx, Rick Astley and Jaki Graham), who also worked with Will Young, Spice Girls, Charlotte Church and many others as vocal coach on the UK hit TV show Pop Idol. This lead her to opening the next chapter of her musical career by recording her next project “Six Hour Sundown”. With a contemporary style that further enhance Lauren’s vocal ability, the band spent 2011 and 2012 touring, again exposing Lauren to hundreds of thousands more fans around Europe and the UK.

Lauren Harris Rocks!

Lauren Harris Rocks!

Whilst all of this groundwork had given Lauren the experience, mentoring, and opportunities that most artists can only dream of, the tipping point in Lauren’s career came when spending time in Los Angeles in 2012, she met seasoned manager Andre Recke (Hilary Duff, R5, Nikka Costa), one of the few music managers that understands how to combine acting and musical careers. After discussing her plan to explore a more mainstream musical career, incorporating theatrical elements, whilst also pursuing acting roles, a definitive plan was put into place and Lauren relocated to Los Angeles in late 2012.

Since moving to the City of Angels, Lauren has been working non-stop, and the first product to see the light of day from the transatlantic migration is a new musical project named “Kingdom Of I”. With tunes written by prolific song writer and famed producer Dave Stewart (Eurhythmics, Platinum Weird), Kara DioGuardi (Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Kylie Minogue) and American Idol judge for season 8 and 9, and John Shanks (Westlife, Take That, Bon Jovi), the irresistibly catchy tracks were recorded and produced by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Chris Cornell, Artic Monkeys). The first single and video from Kingdom Of I, is an up tempo song entitled “Crying at the Disco”, which fuses rock hooks, with dance and catchy pop — an irresistible introduction to the fantastical and theatrical experience that is Kingdom Of I.

Jason Price of Icon Vs. Icon recently caught up with Lauren Harris to discuss her musical roots, the creation of Kingdom of I, the process of creating her forthcoming album and much more!

Lauren Harris

Lauren Harris

As many of our readers probably know, you are from a very musical family. I was curious to hear about some of your earliest musical memories and growing up as the daughter of a rock star.

I remember traveling a hell of a lot. We used to go out on the road with my Dad all the time! Every summer holiday or break we had from school, we were always out with him. We saw so many places as kids! Even when we would go back later on, my Dad would be like “Oh yeah, we went to that city but you were two years old and probably don’t remember it.” We got to see a lot. We used to travel by bus. My Dad had his own bus for his family. It was so much fun. I used to take my homework on the bus with me and watch movies. It was quite a big adventure when I was a kid!

What were some of musical influences that had an impact on you early on?

My Dad used to listen to a lot of classic rock, so he introduced me to bands like Heart, Free and Yes. That is where the classic rock interest came from. As I grew older, I started getting more and more into 80s stuff like Belinda Carlisle, Alisha’s Attic and some rock fare. I grew up listening to classic rock, got into the 80s stuff and my favorite bands now are Foo Fighters, Muse, Prince and Fleetwood Mac. I still love all the classics as well, such as Led Zeppelin. I could go on and on and on! [laughs]

What made you take the plunge and pursue music as a career and was being in the shadow of your famous father ever intimidating?

Yeah, it was. I always sang as a kid. I loved to sing! I would drive my sisters and my brothers mad singing around the house but at the time, I never really thought of it as a career path to be honest. I started singing in pubs with a friend of mine when I was about seventeen. I got spotted in the pub by Russ Ballard. I went on to do a demo tape for him and that progressed to some other people finding out about me. That is where the producers became involved with my first album with Tommy McWilliams as a producer. So yeah, it was totally intimidating to follow in my father’s footsteps and have people look at negatives. It was a bit of a double edged sword to be honest. It is where I grew up and where I came from, so I just wanted to give it my best shot and enjoy it really!

Kingdom of I

Kingdom of I

What can you tell us about your musical progression from your earlier work to your latest project, Kingdom of I?

I think I have progressed quite a lot. It is something that happened pretty organically from just being around the guys in the guys in the band before. It went from a really, really classic rock feel, which is what I have always grown up with and has been one of my major influences, but it has progressed to a bit more of a current sound. I guess that is a result of me listening to more current pop music. Also, the guys around me in the band were really classic rock influenced as well. Like with Richie [Faulkner] for example, he is playing naturally suited that type of music. It was kind of organic in that sense. When those guys left and we started writing again, I just chose to go in more in the route that I wanted to which was to drop a bit of that sound and have it a bit more current.

As we mentioned, Kingdom of I is the name of your latest project. How did you go about choosing the name and what does it mean to you personally?

My manager, Andre Recke (Hilary Duff, R5, Nikka Costa), and I were sitting around talking about band names. For my last band, Six Hour Sundown, we took weeks and weeks going over names. We created long lists of names and whittled them and tested them with people to see which ones they liked. With this one, it came around pretty quickly because it was such a strong name. There were several elements involved like me being English, my heritage, the fact I have always been interested in fantasy stuff like ‘Game of Thrones’ and the monarchy with the kings and queens. We picked out words around that subject. Kingdom was such a strong word. Then we thought “Kingdom of… something!” Then we came up with Kingdom of I. I have had a lot of people, fans and industry people, saying a lot of things to me like “You should be this. You should be that.” I thought, “You know what? I am going to do what I want to do. This is going to be my Kingdom of I.” I think everybody should have a Kingdom of I. To me it means it is your thing. It is what you are interested in and what inspires you as a person. I hope that everyone who listens to the band or appreciates the name can have that connection to themselves.

Lauren Harris

Lauren Harris

Did you have any particular goals or expectations as you entered into the creative process for Kingdom of I?

The songs came about because I was speaking to my manager and I had a load of writing sessions with people over her in Los Angeles. It went really, really well but something was just o connecting for me. He said “Ok. What about these songs that I have?” There was an entire album of songs that had not been used by anybody. The songs had been written by Dave Stewart (Eurhythmics, Platinum Weird), Kara DioGuardi (Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Kylie Minogue) and John Shanks (Westlife, Take That, Bon Jovi). I went through and listened to them. I knew I had to do these songs because I connected with them straight away! It was totally the sound I was thinking of and going for. When I got into the studio with Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Chris Cornell, Arctic Monkeys, Jimmy Eat World, No Doubt), he rearranged some of the bits and pieces. It was a perfect match for me and he was so brilliant! I also worked in the studio with Tom Fletcher and he mixed a track as well, which was awesome! To work with those two people, it wasn’t too pushed. It wasn’t like “What sound we sound like? What should we do?” It just kind of happened and that is what came out. We loved doing it!

You have already released a single, “Crying at the Disco,” but where are you in the process of bringing the album to life?

We are still in the process of finishing some songs, writing and recording, which is really exciting. I am really looking forward to finishing it off. We are hopefully going to get some shows in there as well! I just want to get out and play, so badly! [laughs] I can’t wait to get out and play! It is all coming together and hopefully we will have a release date after the first of the new year.

What can people expect sonically from you with this release?

They can expect the same vibe as “Crying at the Disco.” It has that type of feel. There are some ballads on there and some high tempo stuff. It is really about me connecting to people and really wanting to tell stories. I like singing songs that actually mean something to me and that I feel people can relate to. That is why I loved “Crying at the Disco” because I think everybody has been in that position at one point or another during their lifetime. That for me is the main goal, to be able to connect with people so they can listen to the song and have it lift them up, help them through something or they can just have fun to it. That is what people can expect from the entire album.

Obviously, as we mentioned, you have worked with some great songwriting talent. I am sure you have picked up quite a few things from your time with them. Is there a particular process you use when it comes to creating your own songs?

I have a lyric book and I tend to write down a lot of ideas in that. I carry that around with me most places. I usually write with someone. Before, when Richie was in the band, I wrote with him. He would write the music, as I can’t play guitar very well. We would work together to flesh out the melodies and lyrics. It is a similar process with the newer stuff as well. I have ideas and I sit down and work with someone. We go back and forth. It is really important when you write with somebody that you have a good rapport with them and a good relationship, otherwise it doesn’t work. I have been really lucky to have worked with really good people who I have a great connection with.

kingdom-of-i-2013-2

I am sure working with another creative person can right bring a song to a whole new level!

Totally! Their creativity really rubs off on you and hopefully you rub off on them in a positive way as well. It is a great process to be a part of.

How has the transition of moving to Los Angeles impacted you as an artist?

I just love LA! I think it is full of inspiration and amazing people. I love England too, don’t get me wrong. There is such openness here where in my home country I get a lot of the whole nepotism thing. Over here it is not such a big deal with my father being who he is. Even using that and being on tours with him and such is not viewed as such a negative here. People are really interested and think it is a really amazing thing which I’ve done. In England, and it doesn’t apply to everyone, but a lot of people don’t like the fact that I did that and have said negative things about it. That is find but I find people are more open over here and that has been really, really nice. I just love this city. I think it is full of inspiration and is full of so many people who love music and being creative. It is really nice to be around those people.

Lauren Harris

Lauren Harris

The process of putting together an album can be very intense at times. What do you feel you have learned about yourself as a result?

I think I have really learned to let go of other people’s opinions and really focus on what I love and what I want to create. That has been the main thing for me. In the past, as I’ve said, there were a lot of comments made with negativity and nepotism. There was a period when it really did get me down. I looked at it a couple of times and thought “This is horrible! People can be so nasty! Why do they write these things?” After that moment, I swore to myself I would never look at that stuff again because it is just not good for you. It is not good for how I feel and it takes me out of what I love as well. Everyone has got an opinion but the main person you have to listen to is yourself. I think I have really started to do that and started to trust myself. I also try to surround myself with people who don’t think in a negative way. It is all about being positive.

Absolutely. Anything I find to be very inspiring about you is that you aren’t limiting yourself to only music. I had read you were pursuing acting studies as well. What can you tell us about that aspect of your career?

Yeah! I studied theater in school when I was younger. It was something I was always interested in. Being over here in Los Angeles, which is the acting capital of the world, I thought I would go along and take some acting classes. Originally, I was just doing it to make some friends in the area because I didn’t know a lot of people here other than my manager and producer. They are busy 24/7, so the main thing was to meet people and have a bit of fun. I went to study with Howard Fine and I just feel in love with it. I totally love this and it is something I could do in addition to music. It really felt like a new life, if you’d like. I would love to both and there are a lot of people who do so hopefully, one day! [laughs] I do have some prospects but I don’t know how much I am aloud to say about them at the moment. There is a cinematographer in England named Robert Dowling and there are a couple of things in line with him. However, that is all I am allowed to saw at the minute.

Lauren Harris

Lauren Harris

What do you consider the biggest milestone in your career to date?

One of the toughest things for me was playing in front of my family for the first time. That was at a really, really small gig in my home town at a place called The Square. That was probably one of the scariest performances I have ever done. I think it is easier to play to a crowd when you don’t know anybody but when you have your friends and family there watching you it is ten million times harder! I actually find playing small gigs harder as well because it is more intimate. I don’t know if that is the right way around! I just kind of got thrown into playing on a big stage and it is how I learned all my tricks and skills.

Growing up the way you did, I am sure you had the opportunity to rub elbows with many knowledgeable people in the industry. What is the best piece of advice someone has given you along the way in regard to your career?

That is a really good question. The best advice probably from my Dad to be honest. He watched me play every single night and would always be a really positive person in the room as well. There were times when I would get really down about things because we were a bit of a rock/pop band or a classic rock band that was playing to a metal audience. At that time, I felt it was extremely difficult. I just wanted people to like me but I got loads of middle fingers and shouting out things. I mean, we had amazing performances as well but I just felt like it wasn’t the best fit at the time. He told me to completely ignore everybody else. He would say “Maiden got slagged off in the early days.” There was this one writer who absolutely hated them. My Dad said “You can’t focus on all the crap. It is just rubbish. Just believe in yourself.” Like I said earlier, that is the most important thing — belief in yourself.

Anything you would like to say to the people before I let you go?

I hope people will check out Kingdom of I and like the track, “Crying at the Disco,” as well. We are going to do a video and hopefully it will be done before Christmas.

We will keep spreading the word for you, Lauren. Thanks so much for all of your time today!

Thanks so much, Jason. It is really nice to talk to you!
