Legendary guitarist Johnny Marr has released “Easy Money” – the first single from his upcoming album Playland due out October 7 via Warner Music Group. Following a first listen on BBC 6 Music, Marr premiered the track’s video via PitchforkRolling Stone explains the song has, “…throbbing bass, funky guitar and a catchy melody to mask lyrics about the downfalls of greed.”

Johnny describes the video as, “A ‘high times in low rent England’ kind of thing whereas the song ‘Easy Money’ is more of a ‘low times in high rent England’ kind of thing.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Marr adds: “I like the idea of sneaking a serious concern into the mainstream, disguised as a big pop tune. The riff was so catchy and infectious that I wanted it to be about something that appeared to be trite but was actually quite universal. Money is a preoccupation of everybody, and it took me quite a long time to write something that appeared to be simple. If you were to ask anybody in the City what they’re after, essentially the root of it is money. It’s the age-old thing of people thinking that it will make us happy.”

‘Playland’ is Marr’s second solo effort and the follow up to last year’s critically acclaimed (included the honor of being named as NME’s Godlike Genius) Top 10 debut album ‘The Messenger.’ Work on the album commenced in London in spring 2014 as soon as the year of touring in support of ‘The Messenger’ came to a close. It finds Marr continuing the creative connection that was forged on ‘The Messenger’ with collaborator and co-producer Doviak, as well as the other musicians who performed on the album and accompanying tour.

Johnny Marr To Release New Solo Album “Playland” In October

Johnny Marr To Release New Solo Album “Playland” In October

Johnny Marr – ‘Playland’

Johnny Marr has announced the release date for his second solo album “Playland,”which is set for release on October 7 via Warner Music Group, and available for pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon. Last year, the legendary guitarist for The Smiths enjoyed a monumental start to his solo career with an abundance of critical acclaim (including the honor of being named NME’s ‘Godlike Genius’) for his Top 10 debut solo album “The Messenger.” Meanwhile, his shows were celebrated for his ability to combine the best of his new material with select highlights from The Smiths, plus others from his extensive back catalog.

Johnny Marr’s upward trajectory continues unabated with the release of “Playland.” Work on the album commenced in London in spring 2014 as soon as the year of touring in support of ‘The Messenger’ came to a close. It finds Marr continuing the creative connection that was forged on ‘The Messenger’ with collaborator and co-producer Doviak,as well as the other musicians who performed on the album and accompanying tour.

As Johnny states,“When ‘The Messenger’ came out I kept on writing. I liked that the band had a momentum going on tour and a connection with the audience, and I thought that energy would be good to capture on the new record.”

Written around a common theme of “songs that move at the speed of life,” ‘Playland’ captures much of the spirit that made ‘The Messenger’ so memorable with energetic, post-punk songwriting complemented by Johnny Marr’s characteristic guitar style, thought-provoking lyrical ideas and poised vocal phrasing. “It’s important to sound like your environment and on this record that’s London and Manchester,” he adds. “The feeling of the cities and the people make it into the music.”

The title “Playland” is inspired by Homo Ludens, a 1938 book by the highly influential Dutch cultural theorist Johan Huizinga, which explores the concept of play as a precursor and principal element of cultural development.

One of Marr’s favorite performances of 2014 to date came when he performed at the premiere of  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in New York City. His contributions to the film’s soundtrack (scored by Hans Zimmer) included a songwriting collaboration with PharrellWilliams, while he also performed the closing credits theme song “It’s On Again” withAlicia Keys and Kendrick Lamar on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Johnny toured extensively in support of ‘The Messenger’ with highlights including three sold-out shows in Manchester; major London dates at The Roundhouse and the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire; as well as festival appearances including Glastonbury,Reading, Leeds and T in the Park. His next UK headline tour includes his largestLondon solo headline show to date at the O2 Academy Brixton and also features a homecoming show at the O2 Apollo Manchester.

Morrissey To Embark On U.S. Concert Tour, New Album Due 2014

Morrissey

Morrissey

Globally-renowned recording and performing artist Morrissey will embark on an extensive U.S. Tour on May 7 in San Jose at the City National Civic Center Auditorium.  The tour will continue across the country through June 21, when it concludes in Brooklyn, New York at Barclays Center Arena.  The tour of more than two-dozen performances will include dates at renowned theaters, opera houses, concert halls and arenas, affirming the artist’s unique relationship with his fans built on a 30-year recording and performing career that enables him to command the stage at venues of every kind.

Morrissey’s special guest on all dates will be singer, songwriter and keyboardist Kristeen Young, with Tom Jones joining Morrissey as support artist in Los Angeles and Sir Cliff Richard as support artist in New York City.

The tour dates will come on the heels of Morrissey’s completion of his forthcoming Harvest Records debut album – the artist’s first since 2009’s Years Of Refusal — recorded in France with producer Joe Chiccarelli.  Joining Morrissey on tour will be his longtime band, including Boz Boorer (guitar), Jesse Tobias (guitar), Solomon Walker (bass), Matthew Walker (drums) and Gustavo Manzur (keyboards).

Morrissey‘s recent Autobiography became one of the fastest-selling memoirs in the UK upon its release in October and set first-week sales records when it entered the UK charts at #1 (a slot it held for five weeks).  Its release also marked the first time a living author had been published by Penguin Classics in the imprint’s nearly-70-year history.  Autobiography has been widely acclaimed, with The Telegraph calling it “the best written musical autobiography since Bob Dylan’s Chronicles” in its 5-star review.

Morrissey’s solo career began in 1988, after the dissolution of The Smiths, with the release of Viva Hate.  His influence on music and culture has continued to grow over the past 25 years through the release of nine globally acclaimed studio albumsand an array of singles, rarities collections and live recordings.  He is renowned as one of the world’s most legendary and influential performing artists of all time, recently exemplified in last year’s concert film, Morrissey 25: Live, recorded in March 2013 at a rare intimate show at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles.

The Independent famously wrote that “most pop stars have to be dead before they reach the iconic status he has reached in his lifetime” and Pitchfork regards him as “one of the most singular figures in Western popular culture.”
