DJ Z-Trip has been a longtime friend and collaborator to Shepard Fairey and most recently, Fairey tapped the world-renowned artist/producer/DJ to craft a soundtrack to accompany his first show in London in five years. The resulting mix, Sound & Vision, titled after the show, is a musical collage designed to perfectly compliment the exhibition. “Shepard does visually what I do musically,” says Z-Trip. “We have many of the same influences, so it made perfect sense for us to collaborate on Sound & Vision. I was honored to do it.”
Jason Bentley, esteemed host of KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” will premiere a segment of Sound & Vision during the show on Friday, October 19. The entire soundtrack will then be streamed on KCRW’s blog.
The opening reception will take place October 19 at StolenSpace Gallery, where Z-Trip will perform this new mix live. The show, titled after a David Bowie song, will remain on exhibition through November 4, 2012, and feature a range of new works including mixed media paintings on canvas, works on paper, retired stencils collages, rubylith cuts, and as well as serigraphs on wood, metal and paper. The soundtrack will be played the run of show.
Just last month, Z-Trip collaborated with Talib Kweli and unleashed his newest project, Attack The Block, where he remixed/produced Kweli’s latest album, Prisoner Of Conscious. The instantly-acclaimed release features a healthy list of notables including Lil’ Wayne, Killer Mike and Mac Miller, to name a few, and garnered rave reviews from the hip hop community.
Z-Trip will return to hometown LA in time for the annual KCRW’s Masquerade, where he will headline the annual Halloween Ball that draws the hippest ghouls and goblins across town. In December, Z will take part in the first annual S.S. Coachella Cruise, to set sail from Ft. Lauderdale and destined for the Bahamas and Jamaica over two weekends.
