Custard Records is thrilled to announce that they will be releasing the debut full length album from Hemming, due out on July 24th. The release of the this self-titled debut marks the re-launch of Custard Records, the Los Angeles based label run by songwriter and producer Linda Perry. “I’m beyond proud of Hemming” says Perry, “Making this record was pure, raw and fun. There’s a familiar stabbing warmth in Hemming’s songwriting much like hot chocolate by a warm fire while resting your head on a pillow filled with pins and needles. This is the perfect album to relaunch Custard Records, simply because it’s honest.”
Hemming (aka Candice Martello) initially launched into the National spotlight on Make or Break : The Linda Perry Project, a show created by Perry and VH1 as the antithesis of music reality shows. Martello joined the show as part of punk duo Omar, but it was her solo work that caught Perry’s attention. The very first song of her own she played Perry, called “Vitamins,” immediately caught the producers attention and was catalyst for the development of Hemming, and the launchpad for Martello’s career. After a heartfelt and heartbreaking decision on behalf of her bandmate (and now tour manager) Nick Fanelli, Martello continued on the show as a solo artist. At the conclusion of the Make or Break Project Hemming was presented with the opportunity to make a record with Perry. The album features ten songs produced by Perry and written by Martello, with the exception of “Home,” written by both Martello and Perry.
“Vitamins,” released as Hemming’s very first single debuted on Billboard.com who called the song “a sparse finger-picking ballad. Hemming is accompanied by guitar and light percussion, which gives her distinct voice plenty of room to roam.” Upon it’s release “Vitamins” peaked at #23 on the Billboard Trending 140 chart (the Twitter Chart) and at #13 on the Emerging Artist Billboard Trending 140 chart. Hemming’s second single “I’ll Never Be the Man for You,” a song about unrequited love, is available now on all digital services.
