With unfettered access to AM’s personal archives, AS I AM is told from the inside out, featuring AM’s iconic mixes, never-before-seen footage, photos, and a riveting autobiographical speech by AM shortly before his death. AS I AM includes interviews with close friends and colleagues Mark Ronson, Steve Aoki, A-Trak, Mix Master Mike, Diplo, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jon Favreau and Dr. Drew, among many others. The film also explores AM’s triumph over an early struggle with substance abuse, which resulted in 11 years of model sobriety and a life devoted to helping others in recovery. After surviving a deadly plane crash with Blink 182’s Travis Barker, AM suffered from survivor’s guilt and PTSD, which in part led to a fatal relapse in 2009.
Fans who contribute to the AS I AM campaign will be the first to see the film and have access to a number of valuable collectibles and one-of-a-kind rewards, including:
- Access to AM’s personal 900+ collector sneaker collection, plus his signed album covers, vintage t-shirts and art collection
- Dog tag-style USB drive with 25 of AM’s iconic mixes, including 2 mixes that have never been released
- DJ AM x Serato Limited Edition Control Vinyl, plus a set of limited edition DJ AM slipmats, made exclusively for this campaign
- VIP passes to HARD DAY of the DEAD
- From AM’s collection, a limited edition Banksy art piece, titled “Jack And Jill (Police Kids),” signed by Banksy himself
- AM’s Daft Punk costume, an exact, head-to-toe replica of Thomas Bangalter’s outfit made by Daft Punk’s personal tailor, including full leather jacket and helmet, that he wore at HARD Haunted Mansion on Halloween in 2008.
Instrumental in transforming DJ culture into a booming, billion dollar business, DJ AM pioneered a new open-format or mash-up style which mixed together rock, hip hop, R&B, and EDM. Known as the first rock star of the DJ world, the entrepreneurial AM went on to become one of the most influential DJs on the planet.
AS I AM is written and directed by Kevin Kerslake, one of a handful of directors responsible for defining the aesthetic of the MTV generation, helming award-winning videos for Nirvana, Green Day, R.E.M, The Rolling Stones and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.Says Kerslake: “To track the rise of DJ AM is to not only catalog the singular achievements of a master turntablist, but to chart the explosive growth of the most popular music genre of our time. To track the fall of AM is to dive into the mystery of a human psyche at war with itself.”
AS I AM is produced by Kerslake under his production banner Manifest, Robert Bruce and Dan Franklin of Integral Entertainment Group, and Joel Marcus, who also edited the film. It is Executive Produced by Goldstein’s mother, Andrea Gross, along with Todd Alstrup, Warren Peace, Sacha Cohen, Noel Lohr and Cheryl Horner Sirulnick, and co-produced by DJ Kevin Scott, Jonathan Shecter, Kate Franklin, John Beug and Scott Pascucci.
AS I AM premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2015 Hot Docs Festival, and is closing the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival this Friday, July 31. For more information on AS I AM, visit djamdoc.com and connect on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
