Legendary guitarist Dave Navarro has released a trailer for ‘Mourning Son,’ an upcoming documentary about his mother’s murder and his subsequent struggle to come to terms with her death.
In March of 1983, John Riccardi murdered both Constance Navarro and her friend Sue Jory at a Los Angeles condominium. Riccardi was Constance’s estranged boyfriend and at the time of the murder, young Dave was 15 years old. It took eight years before Riccardi was captured and the TV show ‘America’s Most Wanted’ ultimately led to the arrest. Riccardi was originally given the death penalty, but was re-sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In 2014, Riccardi appealed the decision but was denied in his attempt to get parole.
The film, the directorial debut of Todd Newman, takes a harrowing and intimate look at the circumstances surrounding the murder as well as the emotional fallout — including Navarro’s descent into depression and drug addiction.
“I’ve never been the one to not share what’s going on with me emotionally. I think as an artist and as a musician, that’s just inherent, that’s what we do,” he explains in the trailer. “It’s the most profound moment of my life, and I don’t think I should sweep it under the rug anymore.”
Navarro also hopes the film will help others navigate their own painful personal journeys.
“Sharing my experiences could serve as a tool to help those who have survived the trauma of losing a family member to murder, or loss of any kind for that matter. Many of us invent our own coping skills,” he said in a press release. “Mourning Son is my journey of discovering which of these mechanisms might send me further into suffering and which would help me recover and heal.”

‘Mourning Son’ is scheduled for a December 1st, 2015 release.
