Hot on the heels of her global breakthrough music video, “Earthquake”, which topped the YouTube chart in Australia and hit Top 5 in France, Italy, Canada and New Zealand, 17-year-old singer/songwriter Em Rossi premiered her “Young Hearts” video on May 2 via teen culture outpost, TWIST Magazine.
Having collaborated with producer Jim McGorman, known for his work with Avril Lavigne, Cassadee Pope, Sabrina Carpenter and Kate Voegele, to record the powerful song, Rossi teamed up with acclaimed live action director Kurt Zendzian (Awolnation, David Duchovny, The Tenors, Johnny Gill) to bring the emotional vibrancy of “Young Hearts” to life.
Shot in a sprawling warehouse in Sarasota, FL, the visually engaging exposé showcases Rossi’s burgeoning star quality as she confidently sashays from frame to frame. Stylized by fashion guru Bek Phillips, utilizing wardrobe from Free People, the Women’s Boho Clothing division of Urban Outfitters, Inc, the bold, yet tasteful presentation is a reflection of voguish affectation.
Zendzian recalls the genesis of the organic metamorphosis, “We had a good idea of what we wanted the video to look like, but something magical happened during our location scouting. The unfinished warehouse spoke to me. The rough steel girders contrasting Em’s natural beauty could not have worked better. The colors, textures, dancers, everything blended together perfectly. I couldn’t be happier or more proud of what we created.”
The video showcases dancers Aliska Burkina and Zavio Gonzalez, a dynamic duo from the Florida repertory Dance Fever. Subsuming contemporary ballet that subtly pays tribute to the iconic choreography of cultural milestones Dirty Dancing, Step Up and Flashdance, Aliska and Zavio glide intertwined with body, mind and spirit combined. Cinematic ambiance is awash with graceful dalliance.
In conjunction with Rossi’s YouTube chart success, she has a concert special entitled Sessions at Willow Grove airing nationally, on demand, in 25 million homes via Comcast/Xfinity (https://youtu.be/8-2IJrGRKxM) and her music is included in the new WWE movie Countdown (https://youtu.be/2j-zSJhftv0), featuring global superstars Kane and Dolph Ziggler.
About EM ROSSI:
Armed with a powerful voice, 17-year old singer-songwriter Em Rossi displays a soul-based sound and story-telling ability extraordinary in one so young.
Raised in a Bay Area home filled with love, laughter, art, music and travel, Em enjoyed the support of her tight-knit family of four. She shared a special passion for music with her dad. Em’s dad, a talented amateur musician who also painted, drew and wrote in addition to being an innovative architect, was her spark plug. He encouraged his talented, but shy daughter as she began to navigate a professional career. Em began recording in the studio at age 14. One year later, as she was finishing her first set of songs, he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.
Far too soon, the girl who harmonized and riffed with her dad was now facing an unimaginable loss. Her tight family unit shattered in an instant. After many dark and difficult months, Em’s mom stepped up and encouraged, supported and began guiding her. With her dad’s muse living inside her and her mom by her side, Em found the strength to begin again. She now fills her empty spaces with heartfelt lyrics and newfound emotion… with a voice that is stronger and more forceful than ever before.
The juggling of her teenage years as a singer/songwriter with a rigorous approach to high-scoring academics has proved a powerful cathartic and a light at the end of the tunnel. Cutting an album in high school called for surreal levels of focus — Em’s particular mix of self-containment, constancy, discipline, expression, fun and focus.
Em’s jazzy, haunting vocals make listeners stop and feel. Producer Jim McGorman, known for his work with Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, and Cassadee Pope, has been working with Em on her new self-titled debut album. Deep and soulful, the album is a stunningly complex and sophisticated first release. Em weaves a unique blend of retro soul with Coldplay pop. Her compelling sound is equal parts Adele, Fiona Apple and The Fray. Fearless chords of Motown, blues and jazz resonate on this album, enriched with a fusion of live horns and strings.
Jim says of his latest collaborator, “Em Rossi expresses a musical depth that is far beyond her seventeen years. She is a fearless artist, capable of taking you from melancholy to bliss in just over three minutes.”
