This week, genre film aficionado Jeremy Morrison takes a look at the recently released Sorceress (Uncensored Director Approved Edition) Blu-ray from Synapse Films. Before he gets started, her is some background on the release:
Synopsis: Larry Barnes (Larry Poindexter) is on the fast track to a partnership in a prestigious law firm, and his sexy witch wife Erica (Julie Strain, HEAVY METAL 2000) will do anything to keep her husband happy. But Erica makes a fatal mistake when she tries to kill Larry’s main competition for the partnership, Howard Reynolds (Edward Albert, GALAXY OF TERROR). With Howard now crippled for life from Erica’s dark magic, his wife Amelia (Linda Blair, THE EXORCIST) plots her revenge. Using witchcraft and a mystical medallion, Amelia tries to destroy everyone and everything in Larry’s life!
All the pleasures of the flesh and malevolence of black magic collide in this newly remastered and uncensored version of Jim Wynorski’s SORCERESS (aka TEMPTRESS). Presented for the first time ever from a new 2K scan of the original uncut film element, this release features sex scene footage and additional nudity removed from the original release.

THE REVIEW: Jim Wynorski is the master of the skin flick, but I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. Wynorski’s ability to capture gyrating breasts on film (and later digital) seems easy enough, but he’s really in a league of his own. Thanks to Synapse, Sorceress is now available in a new Uncensored Version that promises even more nudity this go around.
The disc looks great even when the actors have their clothes on! The new transfer for the bluray looks fantastic and I’m really impressed with how the colors pop from the screen. The darkness has a rich depth to it which makes those sexy scenes with a nude booby-bouncing Julie Strain as she conjures up some spells with that old witchcraft feel extra mysterious and mystical.
As far as the plot goes, the flick is standard b-movie fare. Nothing ground breaking, but the actors are mostly pretty solid. Shout out to Julie Strain, Linda Blair, and Michael Parks, of course. Another Wynorski staple is in the casting. The great Lenny Juliano, a Wynorski powerhouse, makes his way into the film and he’s fucking awesome as always. Lenny has flirted with the A-List picture in the past, but mostly you’ll find him as the comedic relief in Wynorski’s sex comedies. The “Average Joe” or “Every Man” if you will. In fact–
PUT LENNY JULIANO IN ALL THE MOVIES!
An Average Joe
Where was I… Oh, the disc is loaded up with a few fun commentary tracks. Genre fanboys will notice one track features the always fascinating Tom Savini. As most of you will probably watch this flick on mute after your children and significant others (or parents, if you’re still in their basement) are fast asleep, I urge you all to carve out some time to listen to the commentary tracks. They’re a lot of fun and (forgive me) perhaps a little more entertaining than some of the “plot” points in the movie.
THE VERDICT: Boobs are fun!
