Inquisitr.com has premiered Tracy Bonham’‘s brand new re-working of her classic hit song ‘Mother Mother‘ this morning. The song originally appeared on Bonham?s debut album The Burdens Of Being Upright (Island Records) and topped the Alternative Charts upon its release (the last time a solo female artist held that spot from 1996 until 2013). That gold-selling album recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and to celebrate, Bonham and Producer John Wlaysewski (Late Cambrian) decided to completely refurbish the songs and re-record the album.
The new version on the resulting Modern Burdens album takes away the alternative angst and distortion and replaces it with a gospel swell of organ and Muscle Shoals era soul. The Inquisitr premiere is accompanied by a Q&A with the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist on Modern Burdens (link below).

Modern Burdens will be released on the International Day of the Girl, October 11th via Schoolkids Records (Bettie Serveet, The Veldt).
At the time of the original release, the male-dominated music industry had room for very few strong female artists such as Bonham. So for the re-release, she decided to ask female performers she respected, both from her generation and younger artists, to contribute vocals to the new recordings. In addition to Atkins these performers include Tanya Donelly of Belly, the Breeders, and Throwing Muses, Kathryn Calder of the New Pornographers, Rachel Yamagata, Kay Hanley of Letters To Cleo, Australian pop songstress, Nicole Atkins, Angie Hart and Sadie Dupuis of the band Speedy Ortiz.
‘Tell It To The Sky‘ another song from the album featuring vocals by Nicole Atkins also recently premiered via Pancakes & Whiskey (link below).
