Now THIS is how you kick off spooky season! AMC is digging up an old friend for FEARFEST 2026, as the legendary Crypt Keeper from HBO’s cult classic TALES FROM THE CRYPT returns to serve as the official host of this year’s month-long horror celebration.
Even better, John Kassir is back behind the mic, once again providing the unmistakable voice, wicked laugh and wonderfully awful puns that made the Crypt Keeper one of horror’s most beloved personalities.
The festivities begin Thursday, October 1, on AMC and AMC+, with more than 650 hours of horror movies, classic franchises, original series, specials and marathons planned throughout October. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of FearFest.
The Crypt Keeper’s return isn’t simply a case of dusting off an old prop. Legendary special effects artist Greg Nicoteroand his team at KNB EFX recreated the character, drawing inspiration from Kevin Yagher’s original Crypt Keeper puppet while updating its movement and appearance for the new FearFest segments.
Nicotero also directed the newly produced hosting spots, with Kassir stepping back into the role more than three decades after the character became a fixture of late-night television.
For horror fans who grew up with TALES FROM THE CRYPT, that alone makes this year’s FearFest worth keeping an eye on.
AMC is also bringing plenty of heavy hitters to the party. The month-long lineup includes films from HALLOWEEN, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH, FINAL DESTINATION and INSIDIOUS, along with a deep dive into the world of Stephen King featuring IT, THE SHINING, MISERY, CHRISTINE, SILVER BULLET, PET SEMATARY and more.
Among the themed programming blocks planned for October are:
- October 1: FearFest Halloween Kickoff featuring several HALLOWEEN films followed by a late-night TALES FROM THE CRYPT marathon.
- October 3: Stephen King Marathon featuring PET SEMATARY, SILVER BULLET, IT, CHRISTINE, CARRIE and MISERY.
- October 7: Chucky Marathon with CHILD’S PLAY, BRIDE OF CHUCKY, SEED OF CHUCKY and more.
- October 10: Creature Feature with GREMLINS, THE FLY, THE THING, TREMORS, LAKE PLACID and CUJO.
- October 12: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET marathon.
- October 16: FRIDAY THE 13TH marathon.
- October 18: Freddy vs. Jason programming block culminating with FREDDY VS. JASON.
- October 24: “Fear the ’80s” featuring THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, FRIGHT NIGHT, THE LOST BOYS, CHRISTINE, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH.
- October 30-31: Back-to-back HALLOWEEN franchise marathons carrying viewers straight through Halloween night.
FearFest will also showcase AMC originals, including THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER, along with the October 23 premiere of supernatural thriller YAGA, starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, Clark Backo and Hudson Williams.
And for anyone ready to take a full trip back to the Crypt, all seven seasons of TALES FROM THE CRYPT are available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder.
Thirty years of FearFest is certainly worth celebrating, but bringing the Crypt Keeper back to introduce the madness feels like the real treat. For an entire generation of horror fans, that cackle remains one of the most recognizable sounds of spooky season.
