Danny Goldberg’s ‘Serving The Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain’ Book To Be Released On April 2nd!

Danny Goldberg’s ‘Serving The Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain’ Book To Be Released On April 2nd!

On the 25th anniversary of Kurt Cobain‘s death comes a new perspective on one of the most compelling icons of our time. With candor, honesty and empathy, Danny Goldberg, one of Nirvana’s managers from 1990 to 1994, shares his memories of his brief but momentous time with Kurt and the band in SERVING THE SERVANT: Remembering Kurt Cobain (Ecco; On sale April 2, 2019; $28.99, 304 pages; ISBN 978-0-06-286150-4). The result is a fresh and frank portrait of an icon unlike any that has come before.

When Goldberg agreed to take on Nirvana, he had no idea that Cobain would become a pop-culture icon with a legacy arguably at the level of that of John Lennon, Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley. Goldberg worked with Kurt from 1990 to 1994, the most impactful period of Kurt’s life.

This key time saw the stratospheric success of Nevermind, which turned Nirvana into the most successful rock band in the world and made punk and grunge household terms; Kurt’s meeting and marriage to the brilliant but mercurial Courtney Love and their relationship that became a lightning rod for critics; the birth of their daughter, Frances Bean; and, finally, Kurt’s public struggles with addiction, which ended in a devastating suicide that would alter the course of rock history. Throughout, Goldberg stood by Kurt’s side as manager and close friend.

Drawing on Goldberg’s own memories of Kurt, files that previously have not been made public, and interviews with, among others, Kurt’s close family (including Courtney Love), friends, and former bandmates (including Krist Novoselic), SERVING THE SERVANT sheds an entirely new light on these critical years. Casting aside the common obsession with the angst and depression that seemingly drove Kurt, SERVING THE SERVANT is an exploration of his brilliance in every aspect of rock and roll, his compassion, his ambition, and the legacy he wrought-one that has lasted decades longer than his career did. Goldberg also explores what it is about Kurt Cobain that still resonates today, even with a generation who wasn’t alive until after Kurt’s death.

“Insightful, passionate and clear-eyed, Danny Goldberg’s account of his personal and professional relationship with Kurt Cobain is required reading for not only Nirvana enthusiasts, but anyone interested in how the corporate music industry engaged with the punk rock underground of the early 1990s. While providing an intimate view of the support system the band had from a world their scene was historically at odds with, Goldberg shares what is essentially the story of two men, a generation apart, who became unexpected friends through a mutual appreciation of feminism, LGBT rights, and a dedication to the activist power of music. It is a contemplative requiem to losing someone you love who immeasurably touched the entire planet with a singular magic.” – Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth

“As soon as I started reading I got sucked in and I couldn’t put it down. As a huge Nirvana fan, it is petrifying to even attempt a description or enlightened comment about Kurt. I just want to say,
any music fan should want this book. Any Nirvana fan must have this book.” – Joan Jett

“There have been many portraits of Kurt Cobain, but none as warm and clear-eyed as this one. Danny Goldberg has always been one of my favorite observer/journalist/architects of popular culture. It’s no surprise that his deeply personal memoir does what Cobain’s best work does. It burrows in deep, and sticks around. Add this to the rich sonic legacy of Nirvana – Goldberg’s soulful account of Cobain as a close friend, gone way too soon, yet vividly alive on every page of this remarkable book. Bravo, Danny.” – Cameron Crowe

ABOVE GROUND: Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison To Play Mental Health Benefit Show

ABOVE GROUND: Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison To Play Mental Health Benefit Show

Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) and Billy Morrison (Billy Idol) have joined forces with their musician friends and special guest performers to present ABOVE GROUND” on Monday, April 16 at The Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. This immersive evening of art and music-beginning at 8pm-will celebrate the vinyl album as an art form, and at the same time raise awareness and funds for the treatment of mental health, with the profits being donated to MusiCares. Expect the musicians to perform two seminal albums in their entirety-first Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam And The Ants and then The Velvet Underground & Nico by Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground-with completely different stage sets and production for each album’s performance.

Tickets are priced at $100 each and go on sale Saturday, February 24 starting at 10:00am via ticketmaster.com and livenation.com. View a trailer for the event here and read an interview with Navarro and Morrison below.

Guitarists Navarro and Morrison will be joined by bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), drummers Erik Eldenius (Billy Idol) and Josh Freese as well as violinist Lili Haydn, plus special guests Billy Idol, Courtney Love, Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal), Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), Franky Perez and more.

During the intermission between performances, there will be speeches from people in the mental health field and a small memorabilia auction to raise funds, along with art displays and information booths. Revolver Gallery will showcase works by Andy Warhol and MusiCares (currently focusing on the mental health arena and all the challenges that are faced in that field)will be present at the event.

When Navarro and Morrison sat down over coffee recently and started to talk about music, art, the lost love of the vinyl record, and at the same time their own mental health and their different battles in the same arena, it became apparent immediately that they both wanted to do the same thing–to celebrate life, to pay homage to records that truly shaped them both as musicians, and at the same time to raise awareness, funds and hope for people suffering from depression. This is how ABOVE GROUND was born.

The way music is recorded, performed and heard has changed dramatically over the years. The days of vinyl albums, lovingly crafted and put together, with the all important side two flip of the physical record has disappeared. The idea of a story that gets told throughout the album has largely faded away.

There is also a disastrous loss of amazing talent through the twin tentacles of suicide and depression. The common misconception that an artist who is “famous” or “rich” has nothing to be depressed about is just a complete falsehood. Moreover, the act of asking for help is still something that is shrouded in misplaced embarrassment, humiliation and shame.

SOAKED IN BLEACH: Trailer And Poster Revealed For Controversial Kurt Cobain Documentary

SOAKED IN BLEACH: Trailer And Poster Revealed For Controversial Kurt Cobain Documentary

SOAKED IN BLEACH reveals the events behind Kurt Cobain’s death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff’s detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case.

Directed by Benjamin Statler, ‘Soaked In Bleach’ hits theaters and Vimeo on Demand on June 11th, 2015.

In addition, Foo Fighters were recently announced as a Lollapalooza 2011 headliner.

The ever-expanding tour rides the relentless momentum of Foo Fighters’ recently released seventh album Wasting Light, certified gold less than two months after debuting at #1 in a dozen countries. Wasting Light has also generated arguably the best critical notices of the band’s 16-year career.

The newly released Foo Fighters: Back And Forth documentary, directed by Oscar winner James Moll, has done likewise, with a just-out four-star ROLLING STONE review raving “a classic rockumentary arc… Dave Grohl has lived an extraordinarily cinematic life.”

Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear will be playing hits spanning the Foo Fighters’ catalogue of multi-platinum arena anthems, including new staples such as the 13-week Modern Rock #1 “Rope” and “Walk,” the band’s latest single and subject of the brilliant Sam Jones-directed parody of the classic crime drama Falling Down. Already a viral sensation, the “Walk” clip has been viewed more than a million times since its June 2 premiere.

More dates will be announced as they are confirmed. For a complete list of current Foo Fighters tour dates and ticketing info visit http://tour.foofighters.com.

Foo Fighters To Release “Back and Forth” Documentary In April 2011!

Foo Fighters To Release “Back and Forth” Documentary In April 2011!

Back and Forth” chronicles the 16 year history of the Foo Fighters: from the band’s very first songs created as cassette demos Dave Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana’s drummer, through its ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

Produced by Nigel Sinclair (“No Direction Home: Bob Dylan”, “Amazing Journey the Story of the Who”, “The Last Play at Shea”) of Exclusive Media Group’s Spitfire Pictures, and produced and directed by Oscar(r) and Emmy(r) winner James Moll, “Back and Forth” culminates with the making of the band’s new album Wasting Light: a process in which the band pushed itself forward by going fully back to basics and recording in Grohl’s garage completely on analog tape. No computers, no software – just a band recording an album to tape in a garage. The new record also marks the Foos’ first full-length effort with legendary producer Butch Vig, with whom Grohl worked on Nirvana’s classic album Nevermind.

Back and Forth,” will be followed by a live 3D performance from the band, playing their new album Wasting Light front to back. Check out a trailer for “Back and Forth” to get a sneak peak. For ticketing info and release date on the movie, check out the band’s official site for the film, www.foofightersfilm.com. Also, fans can follow the original White Limo on Twitter and Tumblr, as it drives across country blasting the new record.  Wasting Light hits stores and online April 12th!

Foo Fighters Release “Rope” Video In Support of New Album

Foo Fighters Release “Rope” Video In Support of New Album

The Dave Grohl-directed video for “Rope,” the first single from Foo Fighters‘ forthcoming seventh studio album Wasting Light, has been confirmed for an MTV/MTV.com premiere 7:54pm ET/PT on Thursday, March 10.

Wasting Light will be released April 12 on Roswell/RCA, while “Rope” is available now both as a digital single and as an instant grat with iTunes pre-orders of the full record.

Produced by Butch Vig and mixed by Alan Moulder, Wasting Light‘s no computers/no software back to basics approach has resulted in arguably the strongest and most cohesive effort of the band’s 15-year-plus career: From first single “Rope” to the frenetic opener “Bridge Burning” to the beautifully bipolar “These Days” to stunning guest spots from Bob Mould (“Dear Rosemary”) and Krist Novoselic (“I Should Have Known”), Wasting Light is a singular triumph: a band that’s headlined arenas, stadiums and festivals the world over stripping itself down to the bare essentials and coming up with its finest hour.

Following hot on the heels of Wasting Light‘s release will be Medium Rare, a vinyl-only compendium of the Foo Fighters’ arsenal of classic cover tunes, released to commemorate this year’s annual Record Store Day at participating stores only. Medium Rare is a must for every serious Foo Fighters fan who’s thrilled to the band’s versions of Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Band On The Run” recorded at Abbey Road, seen them bust out Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar,” Gary Numan’s “Down In The Park” or Mose Allison’s (by way of The Who) “Young Man Blues” in live sets over the years, or scoured the digital and physical worlds for their versions of Husker Du’s “Never Talking To You Again,” The Ramones’ “Danny Says” or Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street.” Medium Rare marks the first and only time all these and more have been compiled in one place, along with previously unreleased versions of  Thin Lizzy’s “Bad Reputation” and The Zombies’ “This Will Be Our Year.”

In other news, the namesake of the “White Limo” video (which has surpassed one million views at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebJ2brErERQ) will soon be embarking on a cross-country tour of record stores, radio stations, gas stations and more, playing Wasting Light for those lucky enough to find it. Yes, the same vehicle that co-stars in the smash vital video along with Foo Fighters Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, and the legendary Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, will be traversing the country and spreading the rock. Follow it here http://whitelimotour.tumblr.com/ and here http://twitter.com/WHITELIMOTOUR.

Finally, Wasting Light‘s release will be preceded by the release of a feature length Foo Fighters documentary directed by Academy Award winner James Moll (The Last Days, Running The Sahara), produced by Nigel Sinclair (No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Amazing Journey: The Story Of The Who, The Last Play At Shea) and financed by Exclusive Media Group and RCA Records.   Moll’s documentary, from Spitfire Pictures, chronicles the entire history of the Foo Fighters, from the cassette demos Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana’s drummer through their ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.
