Paramount Pictures has announced a tentative release date for J. J. Abrams’ highly anticipated ‘Star Trek’ sequel. The powers that be have staked their claim to the coveted pre-4th of July weekend of June 29, 2012.

With the release of Paramount Pictures Star Trek franchise relaunch only a little more than a month away, the company is already preparing a sequel for blastoff. Variety reports that Paramount has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to write a screenplay for the second round for the new cast.

J.J. Abrams is once again onboard to produce the follow-up. It is not yet know whether Abrams will return to helm the picture.

J.J. Abrams’ new vision of Star Trek opens in theaters on May 5, 2009. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) enrolling at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto), and their battles with timetravelling Romulans from the future.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, this has turned out to be a fake and fans are still  anxiously await the new posters for the film. More on this as it develops.
