Review: Zach Snyder’s Iconic ‘Man of Steel’ Explodes Onto Blu-ray!

Review: Zach Snyder’s Iconic ‘Man of Steel’ Explodes Onto Blu-ray!

man-of-steel-dvd-blu-ray-release2013

Over the past decade, films based on superheroes have exploded in popularity with the help of highly innovative and creative directors like Zack Snyder. His latest adventure as a director finds him taking on one of, if not the most beloved franchise’s in comic book history. Not only did Snyder step up to the plate with “Man of Steel” but he hit the ball out of the park, dominating the box office in the summer with a massive box office haul of over $662 million worldwide. It is no secret that superhero films have taken a turn from an often cartoony approach to a more human approach in recent years, following the impact of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy. “Man of Steel” follows a similar path featuring a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. A powerful re-imagining of Superman’s origins coupled with the personal challenges he faces in his journey is without a doubt what captivated audiences when the film exploded into theaters.

An Epic Adventure!

The “Man of Steel” movie is film that is steeped in both action and plot. The film masterfully walks the tight rope of balancing complex issues as well such as what it means to be human with heavy hitting action sequences. Instantly captivating, the flick introduces us to the dying world of Krypton where Jor-El (Russell Crowe) places his infant son Kal-El into a tiny spacecraft and sends him across the stars to our planet. Meanwhile, Krypton’s military leader General Zod (Michael Shannon) attempts a coup but is defeated, earning him and his followers a one way ticket to The Phantom Zone. It is important to mention, the first fifteen minutes of the film has more action than was featured in the entirety of the franchise’s last outing, “Superman Returns.” After this masterfully played sequence, we find Clark Kent on Earth as an adult. Through flashbacks, we a given glimpses into the past the shaped the man who would become the World’s Greatest Hero. Eventually, Zod and his cronies escape The Phantom Zone and arrive on Earth for a knock-down, drag-out fight with our hero. What results is best described as a “full-throttle action extravaganza.” As a fan of the franchise, this is what many fans have been waiting for decades! Michael Shannon’s Zod goes down as one of his most memorable performances to date and the prefect compliment to Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. Other standout performances include the portrayals of Superman’s two fathers, played by Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe. Both actor’s bring powerful and convincing deliveries which help to shape of view of the title character. That isn’t to say that the woman in his life are less influential. Diane Lane plays the role of Martha Kent to perfection, while Amy Adams as an understated Lois Lane. Adams was a terrific choice and approach to the character, providing her character plenty of room for growth in the films to come.

“Man of Steel” is both visually and technically stunning. It is a pleasure to see the film in all of it’s high definition glory on Blu-ray.
