ABOVE GROUND: Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison To Play Mental Health Benefit Show

ABOVE GROUND: Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison To Play Mental Health Benefit Show

Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) and Billy Morrison (Billy Idol) have joined forces with their musician friends and special guest performers to present ABOVE GROUND” on Monday, April 16 at The Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. This immersive evening of art and music-beginning at 8pm-will celebrate the vinyl album as an art form, and at the same time raise awareness and funds for the treatment of mental health, with the profits being donated to MusiCares. Expect the musicians to perform two seminal albums in their entirety-first Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam And The Ants and then The Velvet Underground & Nico by Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground-with completely different stage sets and production for each album’s performance.

Tickets are priced at $100 each and go on sale Saturday, February 24 starting at 10:00am via ticketmaster.com and livenation.com. View a trailer for the event here and read an interview with Navarro and Morrison below.

Guitarists Navarro and Morrison will be joined by bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), drummers Erik Eldenius (Billy Idol) and Josh Freese as well as violinist Lili Haydn, plus special guests Billy Idol, Courtney Love, Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal), Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), Franky Perez and more.

During the intermission between performances, there will be speeches from people in the mental health field and a small memorabilia auction to raise funds, along with art displays and information booths. Revolver Gallery will showcase works by Andy Warhol and MusiCares (currently focusing on the mental health arena and all the challenges that are faced in that field)will be present at the event.

When Navarro and Morrison sat down over coffee recently and started to talk about music, art, the lost love of the vinyl record, and at the same time their own mental health and their different battles in the same arena, it became apparent immediately that they both wanted to do the same thing–to celebrate life, to pay homage to records that truly shaped them both as musicians, and at the same time to raise awareness, funds and hope for people suffering from depression. This is how ABOVE GROUND was born.

The way music is recorded, performed and heard has changed dramatically over the years. The days of vinyl albums, lovingly crafted and put together, with the all important side two flip of the physical record has disappeared. The idea of a story that gets told throughout the album has largely faded away.

There is also a disastrous loss of amazing talent through the twin tentacles of suicide and depression. The common misconception that an artist who is “famous” or “rich” has nothing to be depressed about is just a complete falsehood. Moreover, the act of asking for help is still something that is shrouded in misplaced embarrassment, humiliation and shame.

IDOL WORSHIP: Three Classic Billy Idol Records To Receive Vinyl Re-Release On November 3rd!

IDOL WORSHIP: Three Classic Billy Idol Records To Receive Vinyl Re-Release On November 3rd!

UMe and punk rock icon Billy Idol celebrate several of his best-loved works with newly remastered vinyl reissues of Idol’s first two solo LPs, Billy Idol and Rebel Yell, plus the expansive double-LP greatest-hits collection Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol. Each release is available beginning November 3rd on high-quality vinyl with faithfully reproduced iconic original album art.

Billy Idol’s series of successes in the early 1980s brought punk attitude into the pop mainstream.  With a career that stretched back to the original British punk scene as the front-man of scene trailblazers Generation X, the swaggering, charismatic Idol relocated to New York City at the dawn of the ’80s and reinvented himself as one of the era’s most consistently popular performers.

Billy Idol, originally released on July 16, 1982, introduced Idol to mainstream American audiences and succeeded in launching his solo career. Teaming Idol with producer Keith Forsey and longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy Idol introduced a sleek, streamlined sound and includes hits such as “White Wedding,” and “Hot in the City.”

Originally released on November 10, 1983, the multi-platinum smash Rebel Yell built on the foundation created by its predecessor and features Idol advancing and evolving his dance infused rock/pop sound. Once again working with Stevens and Forsey, with recording done at New York’s Electric Lady Studios, Rebel Yell was a commercial smash featuring songs including the legendary title track, “Eyes Without a Face,” and “Flesh for Fantasy.” Each of these hits are represented by iconic music videos that kept Idol in the public eye during the initial heyday of MTV.

While Billy Idol and Rebel Yell flash back to Idol’s formative days as a solo performer, Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol offers a widescreen overview of his entire storied recording career.  First issued on CD in 2008, the 18-song Idolize Yourself features all of Idol’s vintage hits including his early club smashes “Dancing with Myself” and “Mony Mony,” plus “Cradle of Love,” “Rebel Yell,” “White Wedding,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” “Sweet Sixteen,” “To Be A Lover,” and more. The record concludes with two songs newly recorded just for this collection’s initial release: “John Wayne” and “New Future Weapon.”

Each of Billy Idol’s recordings retain their original power. despite many of them having been released over thirty years ago. There is no better way to hear them than on these classic albums, newly released on high-quality vinyl.

Billy Morrison To Release New Solo Album, ‘God Shaped Hole,’ On October 23rd

Billy Morrison To Release New Solo Album, ‘God Shaped Hole,’ On October 23rd

Billy Morrison

Billy Morrison

English musician, singer and guitarist BILLY MORRISON has confirmed Friday, October 23 as the release date for his new (and second) solo album, GOD SHAPED HOLE, to be released on his own King Mob Music label.
MORRISON–who currently plays guitar in Billy Idol’s band and co-wrote songs on Idol’s latest KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND album–is joined by Idol bandmates Steve Stevens and Erik Eldenius, Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro and rock legend Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals on “Gods,” a Morrison/Osbourne co-write) for the new album. GOD SHAPED HOLE–co-produced by MORRISON and Erik Eldenius–was mixed by Mike Clink (who produced Guns N’ Roses’ landmark debut album, Appetite for Destruction) and John Spiker.

“Initially the plan was simply to record an EP of covers, but as with everything, the plan grew,” MORRISON explains. “I had a song I had written with Steve Stevens that I wanted to sing on, so that got thrown into the pot. Erik (Eldenius) threw some ideas at me, and we started to record originals as well. My two best guitar mates from the two bands I’m in, Dave Navarro (Royal Machines and previously with Camp Freddy) and Steve Stevens, also both appear on the record, quite simply because they are awesome friends and did it without question, they showed up, did their thing, and supported me. And then I got a text from Ozzy, wondering where I had disappeared to…I told him I had decided to record a solo album, and the next text back from him was ‘Well I wanna sing a song on your record!'”

MORRISON explains the inspiration behind GOD SHAPED HOLE which features 10 tracks–five originals and five cover songs (track listing below). “The five original songs were written with the spirit of independence that was so important at one time in music, and the complete autonomy and freedom that comes with a project like this. The covers are not huge hits, and most are by bands that never received the recognition they deserved. This record comes from a place inside me–thanking and paying respect to bands and songs that truly made me want to play, to perform and to do it my way.”

Beyond his commitment to music, MORRISON is an accomplished artist who has been featured at the Branded Arts exhibition at Mann’s Chinese Theater, in the 2015 LA Art Show and at The Village Studios. His new exhibition DIS-EASE–a gallery of the rocker’s original collection of fine art–will debut Wednesday, September 2 at Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills, CA. A large scale piece of the GOD SHAPED HOLE will be on display at the show.

Billy Morrison ‘God Shaped Hole’

“The GOD SHAPED HOLE artwork is all original acrylic on canvas pieces, painted by me in the same independent spirit as the music was recorded,” says MORRISON. “I have found painting to be extremely valuable in my life–a creative outlet that no one else is involved with–no managers, agents, band mates or unwarranted opinions! I have collected art for years and loved pop art since I first heard the Velvet Underground sing about drugs and transvestites when I was 12 years old. From there I learned about Andy Warhol, fell in love with graffiti, followed the early career of Banksy, became close friends with Shepard Fairey and eventually picked up a paintbrush last year. My paintings are just images I love, and the fact that other people like them, buy them, appreciate them, that is all 100% bonus for me. The process when I get it right is as satisfying as writing a great song. Marrying the music and art together in this package seemed the obvious thing for me to do.”

GOD SHAPED HOLEwill be available via i-Tunes and Amazon for $9.99, with individual tracks available for 99 cents, with the exception of “Gods” which is only available as an album track. A Friday October 16 pre-order ($8.99) of the album will include two Instant Gratification tracks “Baby Hurricane” and “Alone In A Crowd,” when the album is pre-ordered. In addition, a limited number of “Art Packs” will be available Friday October 9 for pre-order via http://billymorrison.bigcartel.com/. This exclusive hard copy physical CD (numbered and signed) includes a fine art 18″ x 24″ lithograph print of the album cover (numbered and signed), hand written lyric sheets, glossy (signed) photograph and set of 4 Billy Morrison guitar picks.) “Art Packs” are available at $175 + shipping and will be shipped on within two weeks of purchase.

The GOD SHAPED HOLE track listing is as follows:

“Goodbye Jimmy Dean” (Boys Wonder)
“Baby Hurricane” (Flesh For Lulu)
“Cinnamon Gin”
“Alone In A Crowd”
“Housewife” (Wasted Youth–The U.K. Band, Not The U.S. Band)
“Hold It Down” (Senseless Things)
“Methadonia”
“You Are In My Vision” (Gary Numan And Tubeway Army)
“Ordinary Girl”
“Gods”

BILLY IDOL: Rock Icon Premieres New Music Video for “Save Me Now”

BILLY IDOL: Rock Icon Premieres New Music Video for “Save Me Now”

Billy Idol

Billy Idol

BILLY IDOL builds on the urgency of his last single “Can’t Break Me Down” with a dramatic and mysterious video which premiered today (5/12) via Billboard.com; check it out HERE.  The new video is set to “Save Me Now,” an electro-rocking highlight co-written by IdolTwin Shadow, and Greg Kurstin, from IDOL’s acclaimed current album KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND.

Known for his striking and compelling videos, the multi-platinum British rock iconheaded to the California desert with his longtime guitarist and collaborator Steve Stevens to film the video that was directed and conceived by Thomas Kirk (who has worked with Muse on multiple videos).

The clip follows a priest and a police officer on a wild ride set against the stark, desolate California landscape, accompanied by a leading lady entwined in the drama. In describing the video, Kirk said:  “I went for a concept which very much took the lyrics of ‘Save Me Now’ and turned them into a surreal story that I felt was as true to the very visual lyrics as possible. I loved the image of a bruised cop and a priest trapped inside a car.”

 About Billy Idol:

From punk pioneer to global superstar, William Michael Albert Broad, aka BILLY IDOL, has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades. IDOL is currently set to kick off a North American tour in January 2015 following the successful October 21 release of Kings & Queens of the Underground, his first album of new material in nearly a decade. IDOL‘s autobiography DANCING WITH MYSELF (also released in October) entered the New York Times bestseller list at #13.His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend.  Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, IDOL spent several formative years living on Long Island, NY as a child before returning to the UK and emerging as a central figure of the British punk movement.  As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent and a fan of the Sex Pistols, IDOL was inspired to front the pioneering British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band’s split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, IDOL hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a crucial musical partnership was forged. IDOL created some of rock’s most enduring anthems including “White Wedding,” “Dancing With Myself,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” “Hot In the City,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Rebel Yell,” and “Cradle of Love,” among others.  BILLY IDOL is the original punk rocker who found a way to take that sneering punk attitude into the pop and rock mainstream, carving out songs that have lasted a lifetime.  For all the latest BILLY IDOL updates and information, visit BillyIdol.net.

About BILLY IDOL:
From punk pioneer to global superstar, William Michael Albert Broad, aka BILLY IDOL, has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades.  His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend.
