Stars Hollow is heading back into the spotlight as HBO Max has announced that an untitled documentary centered on the beloved Warner Bros. Television series “Gilmore Girls” is currently in production.
The film marks the first-ever authorized documentary about the series, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of its debut in 2025. Produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and This Machine, a part of Sony Pictures Television, the documentary is directed by Bonni Cohen, whose credits include “In Waves and War” and “Athlete A.” This Machine is led by filmmaker R.J. Cutler, known for projects including “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry” and “Martha.”
The documentary will offer fans a rare insider look at the creation and lasting legacy of “Gilmore Girls,” with series creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino sharing the story behind the show alongside Lauren Graham and additional key members of the cast and crew.
According to HBO Max, the film will explore how “Gilmore Girls” exceeded expectations and grew into a cross-generational phenomenon, digging into the unique chemistry between its creators, cast, crew and collaborators.
Fans can also expect a treasure trove of archival material, including never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and original script pages.
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, “Gilmore Girls” originally premiered on October 5, 2000. The series followed the fast-talking mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, and the colorful residents of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Over the years, the show developed a passionate following that has continued to grow through streaming and subsequent generations of viewers.
“Gilmore Girls” originally ran for seven seasons before returning in 2016 for the Netflix limited series “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”
The new documentary is produced by This Machine Filmworks in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.
Bonni Cohen serves as director and producer. Executive producers include Mark Blatty, Jane Cha Cutler, R.J. Cutler, Daniel Palladino, Elise Pearlstein, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Trevor Smith. Melissa Robledo also serves as producer.
A premiere date for the untitled “Gilmore Girls” documentary has not yet been announced.
